(127) The Dilemma

Florence was asked to stay for two more days at the hospital, given the fact that her memories did not come back completely. But after a few minor tests and treatments, she was finally allowed to come back to classes, instantly getting coddled by the twins and her friends. Professor Flitwick forbade her to start up practices back again, cutting back her practice time a week back for their game against Gryffindor. Roger would be taking over the team for the time being.

"...then when Fred implied that he was in a relationship, you asked George if he was single." Nicolai said, recounting ever single detail of Florence's memoryless experience as they sat down at the common room, helping her catch up with homework. A mortified look was on her face, before she buried it in one of the pillows in shame, "Did I really do that?"

"Sure did," Xander laughed, "You also called Fred cute. Even when you can't remember a thing you're flirting with him."

She sighed audibly, "Why do I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those stories that I'm going to hear about repeatedly when we're older?"

"Because it is. That's what best friends are for, Flo. Someone's got to make sure all the embarrassing moments don't fade away and die. I'm already planning on writing it in for my speech at your wedding." said Xander.

"And it'll be a great story to tell to your kids." Nicolai added, tapping at her temple, "I've got everything planned out in here."

Florence chucked one of the throw pillows at her, before flopping down onto the couch, "This is so boring," she groaned, "I should be outside, practicing."

"That bludger did some serious damage to your head," Xander whistled, "Homework's never been boring for you. That's why you'd end up doing Nic's half the time."

"Yeah well," Florence shrugged, "It would be fun if I didn't have any plans that I can't go to because of some stupid head injury." she huffed, "Atleast we have our DA thing tonight, yeah? Did Harry mention what we we're going to do?"

"Nope. The only thing he's ever said about it is that it's going to be exciting...and that was during our last meeting."

"Whatever it is, I'm looking forward to it." she said, before her brows furrow together, "Which also reminds me, I better see Montague at dinner tonight. I've been itching to have a go at his pathetic arse."

"I'm afraid have to reconsider. Fred and George got into a heap load of trouble with Umbridge because apparently Montague's part of her stupid Inquisitorial Squad. Also explains why he's basically untouchable."

"Your uncle was pretty pissed about that." Nicolai said, "You should have seen him storm through the halls—"

"Wait...Sloan came?"

"Yeah. Right about the same night when your mum came. He made quite an entrance into the Great Hall while we were at Dinner, and Dumbledore had to take him up to his office to make him stop yelling."

Apparently, as soon as her hotheaded uncle had heard about the Quidditch incident, it took him almost no time at all to march into Hogwarts to file a complaint and have Graham booted out of the school. This ofcourse, was proven useless, since Umbridge had swept Montague under her wings and launched a tirade about how he'd be making an enemy out of the Ministry if he continued to push for  Montague's expulsion.

"Well..." Florence sighed, "Umbridge is a pain in everyone's arse... I can't believe we have all this additional stress that we have to deal with during our NEWTs year. Like all the homework and tests being hurled at us mercilessly isn't torturous enough."

Nicolai patted her on the back, "It's the first week of February. We have four more months of school and two more house games. We're almost there Flo... just a wee bit more."

Xander gestured to the two of them, "See, this is wrong." he pointed at Nicolai, "You're supposed to be whining about school, and Flo's supposed to be the one comforting you."

"How the mighty have fallen..."

Xander stared at Nicolai for a split second, "Really? A bible quote?"

She shrugged, "Didn't know it was from the bible."

After wrapping up with their homework, the three decided to head down to fill their stomachs, chatting away animatedly amongst their other housemates until they were thoroughly satisfied. Vanishing before their eyes, the plates were cleared out by the time everyone was finished, each house then asked to move back to their dormitories in an orderly fashion.

As soon as the Head of House and Prefects finished their rounds of inspection, Xander gives the signal that the coast is clear, before fetching the other Ravenclaws who were members of the DA.

They sneak out by twos, deciding that they would more likely get caught if they went out as a group. Each pair was given ten minutes to get to the room of requirements, before the next pair was sent off after them. That was the beauty of Ravenclaws, they always do everything systematically.

As soon as all the others have gone, Xander and Florence leave, following the clear path towards the Room of Requirements. They get there just in time before the entrance closes, the room already filled with lively chatter.

Harry was standing in the middle of the crowd, nodding briefly as his eyes land on Florence and Xander, their arrival always marking the start of his class. The room hushes down with the help of Hermione, everyone gathering closer upon Harry's instructions.

Florence finds Fred in the crowd, looping her arm around his, a big smile spreading across his face at her presence. He takes the second before Harry starts talking to kiss her on her forehead, averting his full attention to the front at the sound of the young boy clearing his throat loudly.

"Okay...er...hello, everybody." the nervousness in his introduction has yet to falter, but everyone in the room seems to be used to it by now, "So, as I've said, I have something exciting for you lot today. I'm going to be teaching you how to conjure a corporeal patronus."

A burst of excited murmurs washes through the crowd, Hermione promptly requesting their silence once more, Harry resuming his speech, "Yes, that does mean that if tonight you're successful, you'll get to know what your Patronus animal will be. However, this isn't something you can learn overnight, so don't be disappointed if you don't have it right away. It took me some time too... Now, if you will, kindly spread out, please."

The crowd disbands, finding an area in the empty room, awaiting Harry's next instructions, "Right. Now. I want you to think of the happiest memory that you have. Just, think of a memory that evokes and stirs strong emotions... Hold it in your mind and ready your wand..."

There is slight shuffling going on, Harry proceeding only when everyone looked ready, "Okay, now, I want you to flick your wands in a spiral pattern, and utter the words Expecto Patronum, while thinking of your happy memory."

Florence clamps her eyes shut, flicking through her happy memories solemnly, before settling on the summer when Nicolai and Xander had first slept over at her house. Holding that memory, she did what Harry said, pronouncing the words as clearly as she could.

"Expecto Patronum!"

She flicked her wand, only a tiny wisp of light protruding from the tip, vanishing only seconds after. Florence frowned. This was going to be much harder than she had anticipated.

Everyone else was trying around her too, and soon Harry was roaming around to help with what he could. A few minutes in, Hermione was able to conjure a non corporeal Patronus, although she was not able to hold it for very long.

"See that?" Harry said, delighted, "I want you to really focus on your memory. If it's not working out for you, find something else to draw emotions from."

Unfortunately, no one was able to do more than what Hermione had done as soon as their session was over. Everyone begged Harry to schedule another meeting as soon as possible, as they were very eager to learn.

"I would have thought that you'd be the first to get your corporeal Patronus, love." Fred told Florence as everyone started to retreat back to their dormitories, "Seeing as you're brilliantly smart and all."

She huffed, "It takes skill too, you know? And I'm kinda bummed that I didn't get to know what my patronus animal is."

He collected her into his arms, Florence leaning her head against his chest, closing her eyes as she enjoyed the few minutes they had before they went up to their respective commons. "Don't worry, love, there's always tomorrow, and plenty other days. You'll get it."

"Fred," Katie Bell called, nearing the entrance, "Come on, you and George are next. Filch is still in the lavatory so it will be safe to go up."

He nodded, pressing a kiss on Florence's temple before they parted ways.

She sighed happily, always getting the warm and fuzzy feeling whenever he did those small sweet gestures, before turning back around to see if there were any more Ravenclaws left in the room, only to see Cho, looking rather comfortable with Harry.

Her eyebrows arched, intrigued, deciding to put it on hold until they got back to the common room. She ushered everybody out the door, before she and Xander took their leave.

"What was that?" Florence nudged Cho as soon as she arrived, seeing her seated on one of the couches, a conflicted look on her face. A faint blush crept onto Cho's cheeks, looking rather bashful, "What do you mean? We were just talking."

"Sure. Just talking. Come on, I know flirting when I see it. What happened back there?"

She shrugged, "I don't know, Flo. Harry he's, he's really nice and all but... it feels wrong."

"How?"

"Cedric..." she muttered, and Florence could see that it was taking her so much energy to prevent herself from breaking down at the mention of his name, "I...it...it hasn't even been a year, Flo, and I'm already thinking of seeing someone else. I-I'm betraying him, aren't I?"

Florence wasn't quite sure how to respond to that. She couldn't even begin to fathom the emotional dilemma that Cho was feeling right now. If she were in her shoes, she wouldn't know what to do either.

If Fred died, she wouldn't know how to go on either, much less be emotionally available for someone else.

But Cho was, and is gradually developing evident feelings for Harry, while beating herself up over Cedric's death.

Florence put an arm around Cho, rubbing her arm in a comforting manner, "I wouldn't know what to do for certain either..." she confessed, "But you want to know what I'm absolutely sure about?"

"What?"

"Cedric would want nothing more than for you to be happy." she told her, "He wouldn't want you to drown in sorrow over his death for the rest of your life. And if you find that happiness in something, or someone, I'm sure he'd want you to pursue it, regardless of who it is."

Cho was quiet for a moment, the two of them staring at the flickering flames of the common room fireplace, "How is it that you always know what to say?" She asked Florence, which made her chuckle, "Well, I like to think that I know you enough to know what to say to make you feel better."

"...Harry asked me out in a date for the next Hogsmeade weekend."

"Really now?" an amused expression took over Florence's face, "How many times did he stumble on his words before he finally got the question out?"

This managed to make Cho crack a grin, "What makes you think Harry stumbled on his words?"

"Let's say I know him enough to know how much of a stuttering fool he is." Florence chuckled.
