Y/N hated his life.
He wildly drove his car that was given to him on his 15th birthday around town, to one of the side roads that nobody goes to, paranoia filling his thoughts as he drove further and further into the road with no exact destination in mind. He just needed to get away from whatever it was stalking him. He didn't know how his life came to this, to him becoming a nervous wreck, but he did know when it began to happen.
His friends had challenged him to get this weird app on his phone. He didn't know what it was exactly, besides from it being one of those free, cheesy, creepy apps that littered the app store. Apparently when you got it, weird things start to happen or whatever ridiculous rumour that kids at his school made up. At first, he didn't want to get it, why waste storage space on something he'd delete within a day. But he did it anyways, not wanting to be annoyed by his friends harassing him about it for the rest of time.
At first, it didn't seem like anything to get your sh!t twisted over. A creepy image of this figure with a animal skull would appear next to you in a photo in your camera roll. That wasn't all that bad. By the time he went home, he had forgotten all about it.
The next few days was when things went downhill for him fast. The pictures kept coming, but the places in which they appeared became more distressing. A picture of him in his biology class with the figure standing not so far away from him. This was disturbing because he had never taken a picture of him in class on his phone. There were many more like that, one with him at a friend's party, one with him on his bike, one with him during tryouts, but those were nothing compared to the more recent one. It was him and his girlfriend, who were sneakily spending time together while class was in succession, with the creature just looming right over them.
And now? He just needed to get away from the situation. He didn't want to believe it to be supernatural. Maybe some creep was using the app to stalk him? Was he about to be abducted by some murderer on the deep web or something? Why would an app like that be on the app store at all!? His thoughts were interrupted by the buzzing of his phone. Cautiously, he stopped his car and slowly began checked his phone.
He wished he never had done that.
The picture was him in his car, with the skull creature sitting in the back on the car, staring at him. His breaths became slow and shaky as he felt eyes digging at the back of his skull, slowly, he turned around, and there it was, sitting in the back seat, staring into his soul.
Y/N screamed as he turned and ran out the car door, stumbling as he started to run into a field not far from the road. Every time he turned around to see where it was, it was always close by, just standing there, staring at him. He ran until his legs went numb, he looked over his shoulder. It was still so close. Eventually, he just stopped running and laid down on the floor, giving up and accepting whatever fate he had in store for him. For a long while, nothing happened.
He got sat up to look at the skull creature. It was just sitting there in front of him, looking a bit confused. Y/N stumbled to his feet.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Kill me already! I know that's what you're gonna do to me anyways!" Y/ N yelled. The creature just tilted its head to the side a bit, as if that statement just made him even more confused. They had a bit of a staring challenge until Y/N finally broke it.
"So, I guess this means you won't kill me... Then why are you following me? Hell, what even are you?!" Y/N questioned. The creature didn't answer, it just continued to sit as still as a statue.
"Let me guess you can't talk. You know what, I'm just going to go, and you better not follow me." He said as he made his way to his car, closing the door and driving off. Imagine Y/N's surprise when the skull creature with black fur was in the back seat with him when he checked. He muttered a few curses to himself, still not exactly at ease with the fact that there was a creature that stuck to him like his own shadow.
When Y/N made it back home, he was berated by his parents about taking off with his car without telling them. He didn't really pay attention to their lecture, he was more concerned that they couldn't see his new animal stalker. It was literally standing right beside him and his parents didn't even look it's way. It was pretty unsettling, as this confirmed that this was officially his issue, that nobody would help him get away from something they couldn't see.
His situation was made a little better when he saw his new animal friend making mocking gestures to his parents, who still hadn't gotten done with their rant. He snickered a bit, enraging his parents.
"DO YOU THINK THIS IS FUNNY, LITTLE BOY?! GO TO YOUR F*CKING ROOM, NOW!" His father yelled. Y/N didn't complain as he immediately turned and went upstairs to his room.
"Well that went great." He muttered. He turned over to his messy room to see if it was still there. Yup. The creature was now just standing there in the middle of his room. Y/N just glared at it before falling onto his bed.
"Looks like I'm stuck with you. What even is your name?" Y/N then checked his phone for the app.
"MalO? Your name is MalO?" He asked. The entity nodded its head.
"Well then, MalO, since I get the feeling you're not going to leave me alone, I'd appreciate it if you would at least give me some personal space." Y/N spoke. The entity just flickered its ear a bit.
"That means step away from my bed, you're basically hovering over me." Y/N explained. MalO awkwardly took a step backwards.
"A little more." Y/N said
MalO then stepped back a few more paces.
"Thank you." Y/ N said.
"WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO!" Y/N's mother shouted.
"NOBODY!" Y/N shouted back.
As the months went on, Y/N started to become more accustomed to his new lifestyle with MalO. It still wasn't all that great to wake up every day to a virtual monster thing inches away from his face, but that's something he's been working with MalO on that, among other things. Though it isn't all sunshine and rainbows. People around school and his neighborhood have been seeing Y/N talking to nobody, and thus promptly shunned by most people at school for being 'Weird'. His girlfriend used that opportunity to break up with him and date a guy that Y/N had guessed she had been cheating on him with beforehand since they were all over each other not even an hour after their breakup. Y/N didn't care too much, it's a high school relationship, it was bound to end and he wasn't exactly the most romantic type around.
What he did care about was his ex's boyfriend, Denver, now harassing him. Y/N was more annoyed than intimidated but even still, he ignored it. He figured that Denver would just get bored and leave him alone. This was a bad choice. Verbal abuse turned physical when Denver realized Y/N wasn't doing anything about it. It all came to a head when he 'accidentally' smashed Y/N's head into a locker with his shoulder when he walked by him. Y/N was normally a chill dude, but no way in hell was he about to let this go on.
"Hey a$$hat, touch me again and I'll beat your face in!" Y/N called to Denver. He wasn't afraid of him, Denver was about a inch or so taller than him and had about the same body type. He
"You want a piece of me, you freak?! You're just mad I smashed your girl!" Denver yelled, getting in his face. Y/N stood his ground, glaring at Denver.
"No, I'm mad that you smashed my face into my goddamn locker, you dumba$$! What is your issue?!" Y/N yelled. Denver shoved Y/N backwards, making Y/N fall to the ground.
As Denver began rambling about how much of a loser Y/N was, MalO was right behind Denver. It pointed to Denver's head before making a punching motion. It didn't take long for Y/N to pick up what MalO was dropping down. He had the biggest grin on his face as he planned on absolutely crushing the dude who's made the past few weeks hell. He didn't want to fight him, but this had gone for long enough.
Without warning, Y/N got up punched him in the face. Denver didn't have time to react before Y/N delivered another knuckle sandwich square in Denver's nose. Y/N couldn't help but to laugh when he saw MalO pacing around like one of those referees in those boxing/wrestling shows. MalO was guiding Y/N on what to hit, when to hit, and what to hit him with. At one point Y/N had the dude in a headlock with MalO 'cheering' and hyping him on as much as a mute virtual monster can.
Of course, the fight was broken up by teachers and they both got suspended for 3 days for fighting on school grounds. Y/N didn't get in much trouble when he got home due to the circumstances of the situation. When he excused himself to go walk around the neighborhood, he fistbumped a very confused MalO.
"I didn't know you knew how to fight. You're actually pretty bada$$ for a stalker animal." Y/N complimented. MalO just tilted his head, pretty much the best response Y/N was going to get from the virtual entity. Y/N smiled.
"Ya know, I think this is gonna be the start of a good friendship. As much as I can befriend a non verbal cyber thing animal." Y/N nudged. MaLO 'smiled' (more like opened its jaw a bit) and patted Y/N on the head a bit, causing a good chuckle out of the boy.
