FIVE - 'Vision'

The next morning, Estella found a tray of steaming food by the table beside her; containing a small loaf of sourdough, a few slices of bacon, a cheese omelet, and a glass of orange juice.

A small note beside the tray read,
Hope you're not a vegan. Enjoy. -TS

Estella looked around, then sat up and dug into her meal. Halfway through her omelet, a voice spoke, startling her.

"How do you enjoy the meal, Miss Estella?"

"Er..." Estella swallowed the food in her mouth before talking. "I like it a lot, thanks. Did...did you make this?"

"Of course. You thought Tony could cook?" When the AI received no reply, she continued. "I make all the food here, keep Tony in check, and am also the security system. My name is FRIDAY - pleased to make your acquaintance."

"Estella, pleased to make yours."

FRIDAY allowed Estella a few more bites of her meal before deciding to talk again.

"When you first arrived last night... I couldn't sense any life form from you. No heat, no blood, no mind, no life. You looked about as solid as Tony's dark rum, which is...not much. But now... I can see you consuming food and feel your pulse. How did you do it? And why are you here?"

"I don't know." Estella replied honestly, polishing off the last of her breakfast.

"Something's been troubling Tony... Something that may involve you." FRIDAY broke off into a series of beeps, and Estella looked up, alarmed.

"What was that?"

FRIDAY's voice returned, pristine AI tones sounding tired. "System malfunctions. Tony's been finding a lot of them in me recently, and I can't identify what bug is tampering with my connection. He is likely planning to dispose of me in a few weeks' time."

Estella drained the rest of the orange juice, wiped her mouth, then stood up. "Thanks for the breakfast, FRIDAY. And... I hope you don't get disposed."

"Thank you, Miss Estella."

"You're awake."

Estella started slightly at the unfamiliar voice and turned around.

Behind her stood a tall, muscular man, a gleaming golden gem in the center of his forehead. He lifted his hands slowly, and it was only then Estella realized he was trying to reassure her that he meant no harm.

"I did not mean to frighten you." The man spoke slowly.

"It's ok, I was just startled." Estella turned herself fully. "I don't mean to be rude, but...who are you?"

"My friends call me Vision. I am to help transport you to Director Fury's office."

"Director...Fury?" Estella asked, her eyes growing wide.

Vision nodded slightly. "He's...not as frightening as you may think." He tried to reassure her as she hunched over, shoulders shaking.

Wait, was she...laughing?

"You are a strange being." Vision commented, watching as she lifted her head, giggling her head off. He was kind enough to wait for Estella to recover before taking her by the hand. "If you do not mind, we have a spy agency headquarters to get to. I suggest we hurry - he is waiting for us."

*******

Vision quickly discovered Estella was a very bright and curious girl, after the first ten minutes of riding in Tony's mini quinjet with her.

"Can you change clothes with your mind?"

"I can."

"Do you hide them in a secret compartment or something?"

"They're illusionated."

"Oh...Do you have powers?"

"They're complicated, but I can fly and go through things."

"Cool. What's your favourite colour?"

"I've always liked silvers and...reds."

"If you had an aura, what colour would you want it to be?"

"Dark greens or blues - ....to match the trees and sky, of course."

Estella went silent for a full five seconds before she fired again."Hey Vision, where are you from?"

"There was once this...robotic form called Ultron, who was programmed for 'peace in our time'. He donned multiple robotic bodies, but essentially wanted to be able to evolve into one of human tissue. The Avengers - now disbanded - worked hard to find and steal the new body, because it contained the Mind Stone, which is the powerful gem on my forehead. They charged the body up in their own lab, where I was born." Vision explained.

"Wow." Estella responded. Vision knew her lack of words meant she was simply thinking up of another question to ask him, so he beat her to it.

"How do your abilities work?"

She thought for a moment before replying. "Well...when I want to move towards something in flight, I imagine the place and the aura obeys. When I want to move through something, I think I have to touch the object and change its emotions. Like how I got into the Avengers warehouse the first time - I was unaware. I touched the roof and sank through the electric systems, turning both FRIDAY and the roof unaware. It's kinda hard to control."

Vision nodded, contemplating the newfound information. "Could you make an inanimate object joyful or sorrowful?" He asked out of curiosity.

Estella grinned, picking an apple off the table. "I haven't tried, but I think it's worth a shot."

She closed her eyes, focusing on her brightest, most joyful feelings she could imagine. The memories swooped in a tide of gold, and Estella compressed the power with her mind into a slithery, shiny rope of yellow. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts. I'm flying in a jet with some clouds, and a really cool inhuman guy...

"Estella, it's moving." Estella opened her eyes to see the apple vibrating in her hand, then watched in awe as it jumped and spun around.

"May I?" Vision asked, extending a hand to look at the apple. Estella passed it to him, but gasped when the apple started promptly melting his hand. Vision's skin flashed into a pale colour for the briefest of moments, but Estella didn't notice.

Estella lifted the acid-producing apple to look at Vision's damaged hand. "Too happy." She murmured guiltily, tentatively touching his partially melted palm.

Estella was too focused on the injury on Vision's hand to notice the apple, which was slowly shape-shifting in her other hand.

Vision coughed lightly, motioning with his eyes to the apple in Estella's hand. She noticed his gestures and followed his gaze.

The two watched in wonder as the very existence of the apple seemed to bleed into Estella's violet hand, the colour moving as a crimson ball of energy across her arms and into Vision's hand.

The damaged skin around the wound slowly gained a pale blue colour, moving inward until the wound was closed. Estella looked to the apple - or, where the apple had been - to find it was nothing more than a dried-out husk of its previous shape.

Vision's hand, on the other hand, was in perfect shape and colour. He gently eased his hand from her hold and flexed his fingers, finding them perfectly operational.

"What was that?" Vision asked, amazed.

"I guess that's what a joyful or sorrowful object looks like," Estella replied, in the same state of wonder.

"Attention: Approaching Carter Port delivery department. Leave your package at the door. Please state whether your object is fragile or not."

"Delivery department?!" Estella asked in indignation. Vision didn't reply, instead pulling a parachute over Estella's shoulders.

"Worst comes to worst, you could use your powers," were his parting words as he pushed her off the mini quinjet.

Estella didn't notice how Vision's eyes flickered green before she fell. Neither did she notice when a green aura consumed him, turning him into a completely different man with a sunken face, mischievous smile, and a mane of black hair.

Instead, she preoccupied herself with flailing her arms and mentally screaming, How the heck do I open this parachute?
