Twenty Three
I was sitting at the bench at the second floor of our college building. I was waiting for Miss Ivonne, the personnel in-charge of scholarship assistance, in our college.
Time flew by fast. This is our last month as college student.
Thankfully, I was able to survive it all. Me and the rest of the scholars are waiting for our certification from the department and also the results of our last sem grades, together with our ranking.
"Amara?" I lifted my eyes to see Troy approaching me at the bench. "Woi! Kumusta!"
I smiled and I gestured for him to sit next to me. He eagerly went towards me and flashed me his boyish grin.
"Ayos lang naman, ako. Ikaw? Kamusta na?" I commented.
"Ayon, gwapo pa din." He chuckled and I laughed along with him. "Hindi pa ba kayo okay ni Jacob?"
I blinked at his question that caught me offguard. I wasn't expecting it to come from him.
"Oops. Mukhang diretso ako masyado." He let out a nervous cackle. "Uy, mukhang may —"
"Actually, nagkita kami last time." I cut him off and he quieted down to listen to me. "I read his letter which he has been wanting to give to me ever since we grew apart. I was actually hoping that magkaroon kami ng pagkakataon para makapag-usap uli." I admitted and stared at the wall across us.
"Oh. Tha-that's cool." He said and nodded. "Tapos na ang buhay varsity namin. Marami na kayong oras para mapag-usapan ang naudlot niyong pagmamahalan."
I frowned at his term but let out a giggle. "Echusera ka din, no. Kamusta naman kayo ni Amaris?" I raised an eyebrow at him and he sighed.
"Walang usad, sister in law. Mukhang matigas masyado si Maris." He said and shook his head. "Pero handa akong maghintay. Hihintayin ko siya hanggang maging handa na sya para papasukin ako sa buhay niya."
"Sana lahat." I joked and he guffawed.
We noticed a commotion at the bulletin boards and we immediately hurried to it.
"Yown! Ranked two!" Troy pumped his fist in the air when he saw his name under the list of top students in his department. Being tall, he has an advantage over us who were not gifted with height. "Lupit mo, sis in law! Summa Cum Laude in the house!"
My eyes widened at his remarks. Troy being Troy, he gently pushed me in front to see the list. Subtly, I was thanking him for he is popular with almost everyone considering he's a varsity player.
True enough, my eyes travelled all the way up to see my name as one of the three Summa Cum Laudes in our department.
"Oh. My. Gosh." I said in utter disbelief and shock.
"Congrats, sis!" He was grinning from ear to ear and I was still speechless about the results.
"T-thank you. And congrats as well!" I said and looked up at him. "Cum Laude si Woodruff!"
"Mana ako sa iyo, sis!" He said and I smiled. "Lika na. Baka pwede ng kausapin si Miss Ivonne."
Less than an hour has passed and we finished our transaction at the office. Troy offered to have lunch today but I shook my head at him.
"Sorry. But I have to go. I promised my sisters to eat with them today." I said apologetically. He still doesn't know about Dwight and me and my sisters planned not to expose him publicly.
I trust Amira's decision as she wants to raise Dwight on her own with our help. According to her, the less people know, the better.
I still wasn't able to let her know that I had met Dylan. Dwight's father at the SBC last time.
He insisted to provide the things his son needs through me. I made ways to help Amira with Dwight by letting her know that all the money I have earned are also for my nephew.
"Let me just walk you to where you are heading and buy for your food." Troy is indeed persistent so I gave up.
"Sige na nga. Hindi na kita masasabayang kumain ha. Nangako ako sa kanila." I said and he nodded.
Together, we treaded outside the university and went to me and my sisters' favorite fastfood chain to buy foods. Troy did bought it for us and did not let me spend a single dime.
At the end of the day, he became a reliable friend. Sinabay na din nya ako since along the way naman daw ang pupuntahan nya.
Armed with a good news to my siblings and nephew, I eagerly went home with a smile on my face.
Troy dropped me off at our gate and when I entered our home, a smiling Jacob, teasing Amira, playful Dwight and mischievous Amaris greeted me with a banner saying Congrats and a sumptuous feast on our dining table.
"Congrats, sissy!" Both Amaris and Amira squealed and enveloped me in a hug. They also get one of each of the paperbags that I have bought.
Little Dwight was jumping up and down with a blue balloon in his grasp.
"Congwats, Tita!" Dwight exclaimed in his language which earned laughter from us.
"Thank you!" I finally said and Dwight dropped a loud kiss on my cheek.
It was only a moment and me and Jacob's eyes met.
"Congrats, Amara." He said and for the first time since our last meeting, I smiled at him genuinely.
