"Give me a tall skinny latte with extra foam... um, actually give me a grande iced coffee with a shot of protein? Wait no... a hot chocolate! Wait, can you put coffee in that? Actually, I want--"
"Make up your mind." An annoyed costumer mumbled from behind me.
"Alright, listen buddy--" I said as I turned to face whoever was rearranging my mood.
The barista quickly interrupted before I had the chance to finish.
"Give me a grande vanilla bean with soy!" She said to the boy to the left of her. I sighed as I turned around again.
"But I don't want--"
"Next!"
I inhaled sharply as I stepped aside, giving a glare to the barista. I got comfortable in a leather chair and waited for the drink I never actually ordered and didn't plan on paying for.
"Koi No Yokan."
I heard a man mumble who was sat next to me.
He was typing on his laptop, glasses sat on his sharp nose.
You know when you listen to a song that you haven't heard in years, but suddenly remember all the words, every beat, every rhythm?
That's what I began to experience.
I felt like 'butterflies in my stomach' isn't a good enough example. I felt like a giant flock of eagles were rattling my rib cage, trying to break free.
"Scott?" I softly whispered, quiet enough so that if it wasn't him, he wouldn't notice. But loud enough that if it was him, he'd look at me for knowing his name.
And my heart began to dance, my soul began to sing.
He looked at me almost instantly, and with a confused glimpse in his eyes, and a small tug at his lips, he replied.
"That's me?" He questioned, laughing awkwardly after.
"I'm... It's Mitch." I said with a smile. His face expression completely changed, and he gasped excitedly.
"Mitch? Oh my gosh, you look so different. I didn't even recognize you."
Was that a compliment, or a read? Was that neither? I think I'm overthinking this.
I laughed, my smile only growing like my pounding heartbeat.
"You do too! What are you doing here? Last I heard you were in San Diego." I replied questioningly. "Just moved here, actually. Wow, I'm genuinely surprised right now."
He said joyfully, and it brought another spark to catch on fire inside.
"How long has it been?" I wondered, beginning to count the years in my mind.
"Four years." He replied without hesitation, seemingly not even thinking twice about it.
"Wow." I whispered, surprised at how the time went by so quickly. It seemed as though it was only a week ago when we were living our lives in a small two bedroom apartment; living off of our part time jobs.
"Are you still in touch with Kirstie?" I asked hopefully. He smiled, nodding.
"Yeah, we actually live together now." He replied. I smiled warmly, wondering how she was doing.
"Wow! How is she?" I asked.
"Great, she's great. Are you living with anyone?" He asked, I laughed a little with a shake of my head.
"No, it's... just me and my cat." I said with a chuckle.
It was strange how we spoke to each other as if we were old friends from highschool, yet, the last conversation we had, was when he broke up with me.
