Memories

A/N: Be prepared for horrible song references.

We both met by surprise, in a little coffee shop as teenagers. Me, the shame of the family, because I didn't believe in god, and you, the youngest of your family, the one your parents were scared to let go of, but did anyway. We hit it off immediately, and after only a few months, we were moving into our own apartment, excited to be on our own. We were so happy, with nights full of cuddling while watching whatever movie we decided to put on, knowing we'd be too entranced by the other to actually pay attention. We shared our New Year's kiss, smiling into glasses of sparkling apple juice after, since only one of us was legal at that point. We were so happy for so long.

Then somewhere along the line, when July became December, we drifted apart. We tried to be the same as we used to be, but it just wouldn't work. I no longer saw the sparkle in your eyes when you looked at me, and you no longer saw the love in mine. I don't know why we actually split. Maybe it had been coming up for a while, before wither one of us saw the fallout. It ended in the most beautifully depressing way, with the whole "we should still be best friends" thing that everyone knows rarely actually happens. Maybe it was the bills that wouldn't stop piling up, maybe not, but whatever it was, I wish it had left us alone.

I miss us.

I miss the cuddling on the couch, with the movie playing in the background as we were entranced in each other's eyes. But you can't predict the ending of things, since I never would've predicted getting your wedding invitation in the mail 10 years later, after we hadn't talked in far too long. I never thought I'd see you, standing up with your love, the most important person in your life, and have it not be me. I still have the same fantasies I did all those years ago. The fantasies of us together, in a house, both with flourishing careers and a happy family, made up of us, a little girl, and a cat.

I'm having one now, as I listen to you and your husband-to-be exchange vows. I smile a little at the thought, as I hear him say I do, and I looked up at you as I heard you mutter the words "I don't."
