Chapter 36

When Grace had ushered Andy and Edward out of the room they had decided to go as far away as possible and hide in the shed again. Plus Andy wanted to see Grace's stuff again, as she hadn't let her hope go. They stepped down into the backyard, into the shin-high grass which made their boots wet.
"Geez, I didn't notice before how overgrown this place is," Andy looked with slight disgust at the giant mass of a hedge next to the fence. It was overflowing out the side and across the lawn.
Without saying anything Edward approached the hedge, having to step over the overgrown tentacles coming out of it, trying not to trip over. He snipped a leafy twig off it and looked back at his friend, who wasn't even paying any attention. She was trying to figure out how to actually get into the shed, seeing as she didn't have proper hands. He turned back and began to snip away more and more, until the noise grabbed Andy's attention.
"Oh!" She said, looking around with surprise. "I forgot you did - hang on. We need to hide in case someone comes looking for us." When he didn't respond she came over to where he was standing and stood next to him patiently. She looked him in the eyes and studied his focused look - it seemed he didn't even realise she was right there. Then he stopped and was snapped out of his trance. He looked down at the bits of leaves in his scissors and then up at Andy's curious face.
Andy turned to the sculpture he had just created. It was a model of the mansion and the grounds around it - an inception-like concept with hedges made of the one big hedge.
"Hey!" Andy said out loud, then remembered they were supposed to be hiding. "Why don't we go back up there?" She said more quietly this time.
Edward almost choked on his breath and looked at her with fear.
"Why?" He said back.
"Well, no one's up there. And we need somewhere to stay where we won't have to hide at every noise we hear. No one ever goes up there." She smiled and turned her head back to the house.
"I don't think..." Edward began to say, but Andy left before he could finish.
This idea he was not a big fan of. Even though it was his home, he was terrified of what might happen if the inventor's son got loose. Being trapped up there - no, worse - being the reason Andy was trapped up there was what was running around his head a million miles per hour. But, whether he liked it or not, Andy was set on making somewhere to stay out of the place she had been captured in for the last 20 years.
