The Immortal Family

Merlin was packing his things up to go home as the sun dipped below the horizon.

He didn't live far, in case there was a medical emergency and he was needed immediately. Gaius had lived in the infirmary, but with Merlin's family of four, the little, messy space would become very crowded, very quickly.

He walked towards his house, thinking about the kings warning. Pierre had only been ruler for less than a day, and he already had the knights and guards doing a thorough search through the kingdom for witches and wizards. He heard that the search would take months, because the method Baldwin had chosen was very tedious. The king sent his guards to gather a single person, interrogate them, then decide if the were magicians or not. If you were deemed a magician, you alone were to deal with the consequences. Merlin had already heard of many people who had fled in fear of being discovered for practicing sorcery.

But not Merlin.

He had decided not to run due to the fact that it would very difficult to hide him, Korra, and the twins, and not get caught at the same time.

As Merlin neared his home, he saw Max in the yard pestering his sister, Mia, who was reading and trying to ignore Max.

"Dad!" Max yelled, forgetting about messing with Mia, and ran towards Merlin.

Merlin smiled as his son raced to him.

Korra walked out into the lawn, looking worried. But when she saw Mia observing her, she tried for an appearance that said "I'm super happy my husband is home!", but Mia wasn't convinced.

"How was work?" Korra asked, once the family had gotten inside and sat down for dinner.

"I heard that all the king's servants got to meet him today," Mia said very softly.

Merlin nodded with his mouth full. "Yeah, and he gave us all new names."

"What's your your's, dad?" Max asked enthusiastically.

"Colton," he replied.

Korra looked outraged. "You look nothing like a Colton! You look like a Merlin."

"I know but the king seems to think otherwise," Merlin told his family. "And he is the king, so none of us can argue."

"Could of been worse," Max said, shugging.

"How?" his twin asked, almost silent.

"He could of called you," he paused and looked around dramatically. "Mordred."

"Go to your room." his mum said, seeing Merlin look away. "You know the rule about that name."

"But-" Max complained.

"Now," Korra told her son, on the verge of yelling.

"Yes ma'am," he said, and got up mutely to go to bed.

After dinner was finished, Mia's chores were completed, and both twins had fallen asleep, Merlin and Korra stayed up and discussed the new laws on magic.

"Merlin, you know it is not safe here. The kids know that we are sorcerers, and I believe they might be as well." Korra told him.

He nodded. "Well, Mia is a sorceress for sure, but Max, he shows almost no signs of magic," Merlin agreed.

They had heard about a family from a few streets down that had a child that accidentally gave away his mum's magical status, and the entire family was killed.

"What about that school in Scotland? You know, the one you went to." Korra asked her husband.

"Do you mean Hogwarts?" Merlin replied.

"That's the one," Korra said. "What house where you?"

"I was a Slytherin, back before they all went down the wrong path. But it's nothing Mia can't fix!"

"I doubt there is actually anything Mia can't fix," Korra told him.

"I think we should send applications to Hogwarts, " Merlin said. "But we shouldn't tell the children, just in case they don't get in."

The couple went on talking throughout the night, discussing the wizarding school and the risks of sending the twins there.

What if the twins didn't get in? What if one got into the school but the other didn't? What if they both got in but people started asking questions? What if Hogwarts was attacked over the course of year? What if the King discovered Merlin while the kids were away? What if Korra was the one discovered? What if the twins had to go to questioning before they went off to Hogwarts? What if a sudden plague washed over Camelot and Korra and Merlin and everyone died? What if....?

There were so many unanswered questions, and so many things Merlin and Korra were risking. But they thought it was worth it.

Or did they?
