Chapter 1

“Mister Harving, could you please answer the question?” Mrs. Robinson asked. Lucas suddenly raised his head off his desk.

“Hmm?” he asked sleepily. Some of the students in the room giggled.

“The question on the board, Mister Harving,” Mrs. Robinson repeated. “What is the answer?”

Lucas stared at the board for a few seconds, mind completely blank. More students started giggling.

“Umm...” he finally replied, “...32?” Everyone then started cracking up with laughter.

“Mister Harving, it may be the last day of school, but that doesn’t mean you can just think you can’t pay attention and forget a whole year’s worth of education!” Mrs. Robinson snapped.

Suddenly, a student’s hand rose into the air and started shaking with anticipation. Mrs. Robinson just sighed.

“Yes, Ned?” she asked.

“The answer is 5.34203!” The student said with pride and a smile on his face.

“Yes, that is correct,” Mrs. Robinson replied. She then just rolled her eyes. “It’s hard to believe my last class before my retirement would contain only one student who actually knows what is going on here...” More students started snickering.

RIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!! The bell rang and everyone quickly gathered their things and left the room. Only one more period before the big assembly in the gymnasium, then it would be the end of the school year!

The hallway, as usual, was total pandemonium; everyone was bumping into each other, everyone was yanking at their locks to get them open, and even some kids were bolting for the restrooms.

At this point in his life, Lucas knew his way around all the hallway chaos. Fortunately, his locker was right by Mrs. Robinson’s room, so he didn’t have that much to go through. After quickly opening his locker (he had the easy combination of 15-14-15), he quickly placed his geometry book and binder into his locker and grabbed what he needed for chemistry, his last class before the assembly.

After he shut his locker and picked up his stuff, he quickly turned to the right and started bolting.

“UFF!” he and another student suddenly exclaimed as they rammed into each other. Lucas’s stuff, as well as the other student’s, fell onto the ground. Lucas just groaned and started picking up his supplies.

“I’m sorry!” the other student quickly told him. “It was my fault!” Lucas looked up at the student. It was a chubby girl with long blonde hair, thick glasses, and puffy cheeks. Lucas had seen her a few times throughout the school year; she was a sophomore who moved to the district at the beginning of the semester. She didn’t seem to have many friends, and her weight most likely had something to do with it; at Coston High, it seemed the only way to survive is to have good looks.

“No, you’re good,” Lucas replied to her. “I didn’t see where I was going.”

“Are you okay?” the girl asked.

“I’m fine.”

“You sure?”

“YES!” She just stared at him like she was about to cry. Lucas just groaned. “Sorry...” he murmured.

He then sped-walked around her and towards the chemistry lab, which was a few classrooms away. Halfway down the hallway, he turned back briefly to see the chubby girl stare back at him for another second before she started going the opposite direction.

Finally, Lucas made it into the classroom and took his seat. A minute later, his lab partner, Ned, sat right next to him.

As soon as he did, he turned to Lucas and asked, “32? Seriously?” Lucas just rolled his eyes.

“You know, I keep offering to tutor you in mathematics and science,” Ned continued. “If you want, I can help you over the summer.” Lucas just shrugged his shoulders.

“Maybe,” he quickly murmured.

“That’s another thing I wanna talk to you about,” Ned continued. “I’ve heard you talk more today than I have the whole school year! How do you expect to succeed in life without talking?” Again, Lucas just shrugged his shoulders.

“Whatever,” Ned murmured.

After the bell rang, the chemistry teacher, Mr. Ladelson, stood in front of the class and smiled his signature grin.

“Now, class, I know Mr. Felchee wants the last school day to be like any other day,” he told everyone, “but what he doesn’t know can’t hurt him!” He then winked and turned on the overhead projector. It then projected the image of the main menu of a movie!

Instantly, everyone started cheering! Lucas just let out a huge sigh of relief. He was glad to get the last class over with something easy.

“Now, if I turn out the lights, I will expect there to be no sneaky PDA, correct, Mister Tolban and Miss Folquen?”

Everyone instantly turned towards Jerry Tolban and Chelsea Folquen, who happened to be lab partners and the school’s most popular couple. The two seemed like they had been dating since forever and they seemed to have no shame in displaying their affection for each other.

“Of course, Mr. Ladelson,” Jerry said with a smile. “We can control ourselves.”

“What he said,” Chelsea replied.

Mr. Ladelson then just smiled again, turned off the lights, and started the movie.

A few minutes into the film, Lucas quickly glanced back at the couple and saw them, not surprisingly, making out very quietly. He just rolled his eyes and turned back to the movie.

“Did you know if Dr. Banner were really hit with as much gamma radiation as they claimed he did, he would’ve died?” Ned suddenly whispered to Lucas. Lucas turned at him and slowly nodded his head.

“I’ve seen the movie before,” he replied. “Stark tells him that later on.”

“Oh...”

“Shhh!” someone whispered behind the guys. They turned around and saw Becky Lexington with her pointer finger in front of her mouth.

“I’m trying to watch this!” she whispered. Lucas just rolled his eyes and turned back around.

Finally, with five minutes remaining in class, Mr. Ladelson stopped the movie and turned the lights back on. Lucas was surprised Jerry and Chelsea got back into non-kissing position fast enough.

“Ok, class,” he told them all, “As usual, we will now check online for any new news articles.”

Some of the class rolled their eyes, but the other students, including Lucas, lightly cheered; Lucas liked knowing what was going on in the world.

Mr. Ladelson sat at his desk and looked through his computer.

“Let’s see...” he murmured. “A teacher in Massachusetts was arrested for giving marijuana to a freshman student.”

Half the class instantly went into ‘Are you serious?!’ mode and the other half started laughing. Lucas wasn’t surprised; that half was mainly the druggies.

“Also, the new iPhone is said to be better than all those before it.”

“Yeah, they say that every year!” Ned said aloud. “I’ll believe them when it actually happens!” Surprisingly, the class started laughing, though Lucas wasn’t sure if it was because the joke was funny or if he was just being nerdy as usual.

“Oh, hold on,” Mr. Ladelson suddenly murmured, “a new article was just posted.”  He then silently read it for a few seconds before his eyes suddenly widened with worry.

“My word!” he gasped.

“What is it?” Lucas asked with concern. Everyone suddenly turned to him.

“You talk?” Jerry asked with a sarcastic tone. “I never knew that!” The class started laughing.

“Class! This is serious!” Mr. Ladelson told them all with a scared expression. “Apparently some sort of cannibalistic creature is in downtown New York!” The entire class gasped.

“What do you mean?” Taylor Silverstein asked with confusion and worry.

“Well, apparently about 10 minutes ago, something resembling a human walked up to some random citizen and...Oh, God...” Mr. Ladelson looked like he was about to hurl.

“...And...?”

“...It...shoved its hand into their head and pulled out their brain!” The entire class’s eyes became saucers.

“And then...it...ate it!!”

“What?!” Chelsea exclaimed with a pale face. “How...why...?”

“I’m not sure,” Mr. Ladelson admitted. “Apparently the creature did the same to some other citizens nearby as well!”

“Haven’t the police shot at it or something?” Danielle Trock asked with worry.

“Apparently they tried, and succeeded in killing it, but when they did, another one appeared nearby!”

“That’s messed up!” Ned murmured. Lucas just sat in thought.

‘Resembling humans...eating brains...I would swear we were dealing with-’ he thought to himself before Mr. Ladelson told the class, “If you have the stomach, here’s a picture of the creature.”

He then turned the projector back on and it displayed a photograph that appeared to be taken with a cell phone.

In the foreground were a bunch of cops with backs turned towards the camera and their guns out and pointing in front of them. In the background, however, was what was assumed to be the creature.

It looked like the anatomy of a human male, but some things didn’t seem right. For one thing, its skin was unimaginably pale with a tint of green. Its eyes also appeared to be crooked and non-functional. The one thing that everyone instantly noticed, however, was the fact that its flesh appeared to be rotten! A few bones could be seen sticking out of the skin, as well as what appeared to be broken ankles and knees.

Upon seeing this, Lucas quickly finished his thought and unintentionally blurted out, “A ZOMBIE!!!”

Everyone, including Mr. Ladelson, quickly stared at him for a few seconds. Then, not surprisingly, everyone started bursting out laughing! Jerry and Chelsea’s faces were redder than a Coca-Cola can, Taylor, Becky, and Danielle were wheezing so hard they might’ve had asthma attacks, and even Mr. Ladelson attempted to cover his mouth to hide his smile, but it didn’t do that well.

“Alright, settle down, class!” he finally said to them all, and everyone quickly calmed down, though they were still staring at Lucas with smiles.

“Mr. Harving,” he continued to Lucas, “you honestly believe that’s a...zombie? A fictional creature created years ago to bring fear to individuals?”

“Well...” Lucas slowly stated in embarrassment.

This was his chance, the chance to speak up and explain himself to the class! He could explain why he knew they were looking at a picture of a zombie! He could make everyone agree with him! This was his chance to finally speak!

“...I...” he started.

“...‘am a nerd’?” Jerry suddenly taunted. “Trust me, we all know!” Everyone then started busting into laughter again. Lucas just sighed and slammed his head onto his desk with frustration.

‘Way to go, Luke,’ he thought to himself. ‘It’s the last minute of the last class of the school year and everyone thinks you’re a bigger weirdo than usual! Congrats, old buddy! You’ve officially earned the ‘You suck worse than cheap vacuum’ award!’

RIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!! The bell rang and everyone packed up and left. Lucas, however, stayed there for a few more seconds before slowly picking his head up and gathering his supplies.

“Lucas,” Mr. Ladelson suddenly told him, “can I talk to you for a second?”

“Sure...” Lucas replied, not really caring.

“Look, I’m sorry for making fun of you just now.”

“It’s ok, sir. I’m used to it.”

With that, Lucas picked up his things and left. Before walking out the door, however, he quickly turned around and looked at Mr. Ladelson, who had an embarrassed look on his face. Lucas then left the room and headed towards his locker.

When he got there, he quickly placed his things in his locker and headed towards the gymnasium. While walking down there, he saw through the corner of his eye, near the cafeteria, the girl he saw earlier. He quickly turned towards her and saw her quickly turn her gaze away from him. Not really pondering it, he continued towards the gym.

By the time he got there, most of the student body was there already. As usual, everyone was chattering as loud as they physically could. They were chatting so loud that he could barely hear Ned shouting at him to get his attention. Lucas turned and saw Ned in the top row pointing to the seat next to his, signaling him to join him. Silently groaning, Lucas headed over to Ned and sat next to him.

Almost instantly, Ned turned to Lucas and asked, “Zombies? You really thought that was a zombie?” Lucas just sighed.

“I don’t wanna talk about it,” he replied without making eye contact.

“I’ll add that to the long list then...” Ned responded with an eye roll.

After another minute, the static of a microphone could be heard through the speakers. Everyone then silenced and turned towards the center of the court where Mr. Felchee, the principal of Coston High School, was standing with a mic in his hand.

“Good afternoon, students!” he told them all. “I understand a good majority of you aren’t pleased with today’s schedule, but I believe education shouldn’t be stopped just because the year ends.”

Lucas could hear a lot of students nearby scoff.

“Now,” Mr. Felchee continued, “I want to start the assembly off by honoring the participants of this year’s school activities! When I call your activity, please stand up. First up, the football team!”

Before anyone could stand, the crowd starting cheering. Lucas couldn’t blame them; the team was undefeated through the entire season! When the entire team was standing, it seemed like the cheering went up by 50%! Lucas looked around the gym and instantly saw Jerry Tolban standing all high-and-mighty. Lucas just didn’t get it; Jerry was one of, if not THE, biggest jerks in the entire school. How he got so much attention was beyond comprehension. Perhaps it had something to do with being quarterback on the team.

After the cheering died down and the players sat down, Mr. Felchee continued speaking.

“Now, may all cheerleaders please stand?” The 10 cheerleaders on the squad quickly sat up while everyone applauded them. Right next to Jerry stood Chelsea, who happened to be the head of the cheerleading squad. That’s right; the quarterback and the head cheerleader are the biggest couple in the school. That’s a cliché if there ever was one.

“May the cast for this year’s fall musical and spring play stand?” More applause. Lucas glanced and was shocked to see that blonde chubby girl standing up! Nobody seemed to be applauding towards her, though, which sort of made Lucas feel sorry for her.

“Next, the school marching band!” The large band stood up and more applause ensued. Lucas saw Becky standing and giving a small applause to herself. He then noticed she was wearing her “I LOVE CLARINETS” sweatshirt. Lucas just chuckled. It was rare to see her without that sweatshirt; she said it was a lucky charm or something.

“Now, the science club!” Ned quickly stood up, as well as the 5 other people in the club. Lucas was actually shocked there was applause for them.

From there it was the same for the rest of the activities: basketball, volleyball, soccer, yearbook club, recycling club, mathletes, etc.

After that was all over with, Mr. Felchee then went on to explain how he was pleased with the school year and how everyone did fairly well. Lucas just quietly scoffed. Half the students were drug addicts, another 25% were just plain brainless, and another 24% were just didn’t care. Only 1% of the student body was actually smart.

“Now, I want to thank all the staff for doing such a good job this year, as well. I also want to specifically thank Mrs. Robinson for 40 strong years of teaching! Mrs. Robinson, could you please step forward?”

Mrs. Robinson then stepped forward with a smile on her face and she waved to the students as if they were paparazzi and she was Beyoncé. The students applauded the woman with a good deal of claps.

Mr. Felchee then walked over to her and started going all ‘Q and A’ on her, asking her things like how she felt to be leaving Coston High (very heartbroken), what she planned to do after retirement (move to Daytona Beach, Florida), and what she’d miss most about Coston (the joys of teaching math to teens). Lucas wondered how true that last one was.

With that, Mrs. Robinson rejoined the other teachers and Mr. Felchee returned to the front of the court.

“Now, before we leave for the summer, I want to remind you all to not waste your summer sleeping or playing your Nintendos or whatever. Be sure to spend time outside and be physically active! Spend time with your friends! Do whatever! As long as it’s legal, of course.”

Half the students weren’t listening; Mr. Felchee gave this speech every year, and nobody seems to follow his advice. Lucas wondered if he EVER would figure it out.

“Now, on the count of three, I want us all to shout as loud as we can, ‘Go Cosmos!’ Ready? One...two...three!”

“GO COSMOS!” Everyone shouted. Well, nearly everyone, anyway. Lucas just shrugged and mouthed it.

Suddenly, before anyone could do anything else, all the lights in the building went off! Everyone quickly started talking amongst themselves asking what was going on, including the faculty. Lucas just stared at the ceiling, being confused as well.

Two seconds later, a loud CRASH was heard overhead, and everyone looked towards the ceiling and saw a large dark object fall through the ceiling and land right in the center of the court! Sunlight poured through the hole in the ceiling, being the only source of light in the gymnasium.

Everyone muttered to themselves as they stared at the object. It appeared to be a box about seven feet tall and five feet wide. It was all black, save for a strange green glow coming from underneath it.

When the courage was finally grown, Mr. Felchee slowly walked towards the box with caution. Lucas suddenly realized how quiet everyone else was at this point.

When Mr. Felchee was a foot in front of the box, an indentation that looked like a doorway about 6 feet high and 3 feet wide appeared on the box! The same green light could be seen illuminating out of the doorway.

Mr. Felchee stared wide-eyed at the green light and slowly walked towards it. Lucas could hear a few students murmuring about how he was crazy. When he was right in front of the box, he stared at the light so strangely that he almost appeared to be hypnotized or something...

Just then, Mr. Felchee appeared to be sucked into the light with a loud scream! Everyone gasped in terror at what they heard next: screams of fear, as well as what appeared to be crunching sounds! Mr. Ladelson quickly ran towards the box to try to help. However, he was too late; the next thing anyone knew, Mr. Felchee was thrown back out of the box! Before he even landed, everyone knew something wasn’t right; he appeared to be lifeless and was flopping like a rag doll!

Mr. Felchee landed right in front of Mr. Ladelson, who instantly looked at him and screamed in terror! The other teachers ran towards Mr. Felchee and backed up at the sight of him as well! Mrs. Rodriguez, the Spanish teacher, even turned and threw up!

The students tried to get a good view of Mr. Felchee to see what was wrong; they may have regretted it, including Lucas; Mr. Felchee was lying lifeless with a giant fist-sized hole in his forehead! Blood could be seen dripping off the side of his head from the hole!

At this point, everyone was screaming bloody murder and freaking out! Before anyone could run out of their seats, however, a loud hydraulic noise could be heard from the black box, which instantly made everyone be quiet. A second later, a whole hoard of what appeared to humans ran out of the box and looked around!

The first thing Lucas wondered was how they all fit in that small box. The second thing he thought was their appearance looked very familiar. After a split second, he recognized them as looking like that creature in New York! The one that looked like...

“ZOMBIES!” he suddenly exclaimed in fear. Everyone quickly looked at him with confusion on their faces. However, a second later, they could hear screaming come from the center of the gym. All the students turned and saw one of the creatures hold a gooey red blob in its hand while standing over what appeared to be...Mrs. Rodriguez face down with blood coming from her head!!

“ZOMBIES!!!” Jerry suddenly exclaimed as well. Everyone then screamed in fear and quickly got out of their seats, heading for the exits!

Before any of them could make it very far, there were more sounds of crashing from up above them! This time, however, there were multiple dark objects and they landed right in front of all the exits! Almost instantly, the objects opened like the one in the middle of the room and more zombies rushed out!

Lucas was used to the rushing and chaos between passing periods, but the chaos that ensued in that gym was greater than he could have ever imagined. He could hear crunching and screaming all around him that caused him to realize how serious and dangerous this was about to become.

He could see a few zombies removing some students’ brains on the other side of the gym, and he felt like he was about to hurl up the chicken fajita the school served for lunch that day! To his right, zombies were tackling a soccer player to the ground and appearing to bite his face! To the left were a few zombies holding a few of his locker-mates to the wall!

With all this happening, Lucas knew he had to do one thing and one thing only: get out of that gymnasium!! He quickly looked around and saw the storage closet along the wall! Maybe he could use the giant vent in there to get out! He then started bolting towards the closet door at full sprint, avoiding the oncoming students on the way.

“LUCAS!” he suddenly heard a familiar voice screech. He turned around and saw Ned chasing after him at full sprint, with a zombie behind him! Quickly realizing Ned was about to be a goner without help, Lucas bolted towards him and grabbed his arm. He then ran back towards the closet with Ned held tight to him.

CONK! Lucas accidently ran into another student, and he, Ned, and the student fell to the floor. Lucas quickly got back up and saw it was that chubby blonde again! She looked scared out of her mind, but that was understandable, given the current situation.

Without thinking too long, he quickly got up, grabbed her, and ran towards the closet. After what seemed like forever, he made it to the closet door and threw it open! He then threw himself, the girl, and Ned into the closet and he attempted to shut the door. Before the door could be completely shut, however, it was thrown back open really quickly!

Standing in the doorway, and running in the closet, were Jerry and Chelsea, holding hands and panting with worry. Without saying anything, Lucas once again attempted to shut the door. This time, Becky Lexington jumped through the crack and rolled on the floor before the door managed to completely shut.

When the door was tightly closed, Lucas let out a huge sigh of relief. He then turned towards everyone in the small room with him.

“Now do you believe that it’s zombies?” he asked them. They all responded with silence, save for the screaming behind the door.

“I don’t want to, but there’s no other explanation,” Becky finally admitted.

“It might be too early to say that,” Ned replied. “Maybe there’s some sort of virus causing humans to turn cannibalistic.”

“Ned, for once, can you just shut up and not resort to your science crap?” Jerry suddenly snarled. That seemed to do the trick, as Ned then stood quietly.

“So what now, Harving?” Jerry asked Lucas.

“We get out of here,” Lucas replied. He then pointed to the large ventilation system above them. “If we climb up there, it should lead outside of the gym, in front of the bathrooms and the agriculture hallway.”

“Well, it seems to be our only way,” Jerry admitted. “I’ll go first to make sure it’s safe. Then I’ll help the rest of you up.”

“How do we know you won’t just abandon us all if and when you get out?” Ned asked with an angry look on his face.

“Just for even thinking that I would do that, maybe I ought to leave YOU behind, Rike!” Jerry sternly replied.

“Enough!” the chubby blonde shouted. Everyone looked at her with shock; that was the first time any of them heard her speak.

“Please stop fighting...” she continued in almost a whisper. Jerry just sighed.

“Someone help me up there,” he finally told everyone. A few seconds passed before Lucas walked over, got on his knee, and cupped his hands close to the ground. When he did, Jerry placed his foot into Lucas’s hand. Lucas then quickly thrust the football star up in the air. Jerry barely managed to grab the grate and pull it off. When that was accomplished, he crawled inside and disappeared from sight. The gang could hear him crawling away in the vent, which frightened Lucas; if they could hear it, maybe a zombie out there could, as well.

Finally, they heard the noise return to the vent and they saw Jerry stick his head out of the vent.

“You were right, Harving,” he told Lucas. “The vent leads to the hallway outside the gym.”

“Great!” Chelsea shouted with a smile. “Now, let’s get out of here!”

Just then, Lucas shushed her. It looked like she was about to make a rude remark, but Lucas quickly said, “It sounds pretty quiet out there.” Sure enough, there wasn’t a peep of sound coming outside the closet door.

“Maybe the zombies left?” Becky whispered.

“Maybe...” Lucas whispered back.

“Either way, I’m not risking going out that door,” Jerry whispered to them all. He then reached his hand down and grabbed Chelsea’s arm. “Let’s go out through the vent.”

“Alright,” Lucas agreed. He then grabbed Chelsea at the waist and proceeded to lift her up.

“Watch where you’re grabbing, Harving,” she growled. “Some of those areas are for Jerry only.”

Lucas just sighed and lifted her up. When Jerry pulled her up into the vent, Becky stepped forward to be lifted as well. As soon as she was up, as well, Ned walked up. When he was in, Lucas turned and saw the blonde girl stare at him with worry.

“It’ll be fine,” he told her. “What’s your name?”

She stared for a few more seconds before replying, “Phoebe.”

“Phoebe, that vent’s the only way out of here. Let me help you up.”

“But...” she whispered, “...what if you can’t pick me up?” Lucas just sighed.

“Trust me,” he told her. “I’m stronger than I look.” Phoebe then sighed as well and walked forward to be lifted up. Lucas then grabbed her waist and lifted her up. She was a bit more difficult to carry, but it was nothing he couldn’t handle.

After Jerry pulled Phoebe in, he looked at Lucas and held out his hand.

“Grab on,” the jock told the loner. Lucas then reached up and grabbed Jerry’s hand. At that second, there was banging at the door! There were also sounds of growling coming from the other side!

“They’re coming!” Chelsea screeched. With that, Jerry quickly yanked up and pulled Lucas into the vent with the others. When he did, Lucas quickly told the others to crawl towards the hallway, which they all immediately did. With Phoebe in front and Lucas in back, the group crawled what seemed like forever through the ventilation system before finally reaching the end. They all then looked through the grate and saw zombies all over the hallway.

“It looks like they figured out we escaped...” Jerry murmured.

“So, now what?” Ned asked Lucas. Lucas then stared in thought at the hallway.

“We’re pretty high up, so if we open the grate, they shouldn’t see the movement,” he finally told them. “We can then find some way to distract them and make a run for it.”

“What do you plan to distract them with?” Phoebe asked quietly.

“I’m not sure...does anybody have something I can throw?”

“Well, I have my graphing calculator,” Ned told him, “but this thing is pretty expensive.”

“Then I’ll buy you a new one,” Lucas replied. Ned just sighed and pulled the calculator out of his pocket. Lucas then grabbed it and slowly removed the grate from the vent.

Making sure not to drop it, he put the grate inside the vent with them. He then looked down the hallway to find somewhere to throw it. He found a spot pretty far down where there were no noticeable zombies. Holding his breath, he quickly chucked the calculator down the hallway, and when it hit the floor, it seemed to keep sliding forever.

The noise definitely attracted the zombies, because they then turned towards the hallway and slowly walked towards it.

“Now’s our chance!” Lucas whispered. He then quietly leapt down the vent and ran the way opposite of the zombies. He heard Ned jump down behind him, as well as Becky. Speed-walking down the hallway, Lucas quickly looked for a place to hide. He then saw Mr. Ladelson’s room and bolted into there. Holding the door open for the others, he saw Ned, Becky, Chelsea, and Jerry run into the room.

“Wait...where’s Phoebe?” Lucas asked.

“Who...?” Chelsea asked with a confused look. “Oh, you mean that fat chick? I dunno. She was right behind us.”

Lucas then looked out the doorway and saw Phoebe slowly running towards the room. She appeared to be severely out of breath. Finally, she managed to make it into the room, and then Lucas closed and locked the door.

“Alright, we’re somewhat safe for now,” he then told them all.

“What exactly is going on?” Becky asked to nobody in particular.

“I wish I knew,” Jerry replied. “Maybe it has something to do with New York earlier.”

“Maybe,” Lucas replied with a nod. “All I know for sure is this; we need to stay hidden. Because as long as the school’s being invaded by zombies, none of us are completely safe.”
