Chapter 3

It was Mel's turn to pay for lunch that day. Levka felt bad, since Mel wasn't doing too good on saving points, but it was only fair, since Lee and Levka had paid the last two times. Levka decided she would consider helping Mel out during morning classes, though part of her felt that Mel should learn on her own.

Levka decided not to dwell on it too much.

The three of them met up outside Lee's dorm and walked to morning classes together. When they entered the classroom, everyone was talking, and no one was paying attention to Duprao-sensei. Since Duprao-sensei didn't say anything about it, they just kept talking over her to the point where Levka, Lee, and Mel, who were actually trying to listen to their teacher, couldn't hear her. A few students left the classroom in the middle of class. Duprao-sensei still didn't say anything, so Levka, Lee, and Mel decided to leave too. After all, if Duprao-sensei would tolerate them skipping, then why not? Lee and Mel truly were skipping just to skip class, though Levka was curious to see what the consequences would be.

They ate lunch at a food truck in the school's courtyard. Levka was glad that it was cheap. If lunch had cost a lot of money, Levka may have ended up feeling so bad for Mel that she probably would've ended up paying.

After lunch, they decided to go see a movie at the movie theatre to pass the time. Mel chose the movie Crula, an old movie based on a classic book. Of course, that movie's tickets cost them one hundred points more than most of the other movies. They all paid for their own tickets, yet Levka got a strange feeling that Mel was trying to spend all her points.

After the movie, Mel headed to the library to read, and Lee was going shopping with her other friends. Lee seemed very extroverted to Levka, since she was friends with pretty much everyone in their class. Levka didn't understand how any person could have that much energy.

Levka decided to head back to her dorm, maybe do some studying. When she entered the elevator, there was someone already in there. A boy, who looked like he was her age.

"Hi. I'm Hiro Tsubaki. You can call me by my first name." He said.

"Nice to meet you, Hiro. I'm Katia Levka. You can call me by my first name too, I guess."

Why is this boy talking to me at all? Much less letting me call him by his first name... I must admit, he is a little suspicious, even if he seems nice, Levka thought to herself.

"Okay! Nice to meet you too, Katia!"

Hiro shook her hand, and Katia couldn't help but blush. Her suspicions dropped instantly. There's no one someone like him could possibly have some sort of ulterior motive.

"So, what class are you in?" She asked.

"Class 1-D. What about you?"

"Class 1-E."

"Oh, that's super cool! Is Class E fun?" Hiro asked, smiling at her.

"Well, I guess. We don't really have to go to class. Our teacher doesn't yell at us if we misbehave. And the other students are too loud in class to actually learn anything, so me and my friends just skip."

"Hmm..." Hiro says. He makes a face like he's deep in thought. "Here's the thing. Your class total will go down every time someone misbehaves. I recommend you try to get your class to behave, or your class might run out of points. And it's hard to get them back, trust me."

Levka thought for a moment. It made sense, but...

"How do you know all of this? Did your teacher tell you?"

Hiro shook his head. "My brother is a third year. He told me. He learned the hard way, when his class lost every point they had on the very first day."

"Oh my," Levka said, shuddering a bit.

She had expected that that was the case, but she didn't think that it would be possible to lose every single one of your points on the first day.

"Yeah. Anyway, is this your floor?" Hiro asked.

Levka hadn't even noticed that the elevator had stopped.

"Oh! Yes. Well, I'll see you later, Hiro. And just so you know, we may be somewhat friends now, but my class will get more class points than yours."

Hiro smiled. "I can't wait to see that. See you later, Katia!"

Levka headed back to her dorm. She picked up one of the notebooks she bought and began to make a plan. Her class would have to work hard to behave well, and to surpass Class D. She looked at her phone, and looked up all the class' point totals.

Class A: 1,100
Class B: 998
Class C: 906
Class D: 703
Class E: 474

Hmm... Levka thought. So he was telling the truth about points. Our class is doing really bad right now, though Class D isn't doing great either. And it seems Class A has gained points. I didn't think that would be possible. It'll be difficult, if we want to become Class A. I wonder how they do it?

Then Levka had an idea. No, more than an idea... she had a plan.

The next day, she shared her plan with Lee and Mel.

"I think the point gain and loss depends on our behavior and grades. So then, if we get perfect grades and behave well, we should be able to gain all our points back. I want to ask Dupraw-sensei about it as well. She might be able to tell us something. The hardest part will be convincing the rest of the class of our plan." Levka explains.

"Sounds good!" Lee said. "I have a lot of friends in our class, so I can help convince them!"

"I'm not sure I can do anything to help, but I'll try my best," Mel said.

"Great!" Levka says. "Class starts in twenty minutes. We should get there early, that might help us get points."

They headed back to class. Unfortunately, they were the only students to show up. They stayed in class and paid attention, and tried their best to answer every worksheet and question correctly. At lunch, they tried to find all their classmates. The first person they managed to track down was one of the most popular girls in their class, Kishite Jishieta.

"Hi, it's Kishite, right? My name is Katia Levka."

"Yeah, that's me. Nice to meet you. Is there something you need from me?"

"Yes, actually. Have you checked the class total recently?"

"Yeah, I have. It went down! Do you know why it changed?"

"Yep. Whenever we do something bad, like skip class or talk over the teacher, or get a bad score on a test or worksheet, then we lose points. And the class total is our allowance too, which means we lost over half a million points this month."

Kishite covered her face in her hands. "I should have known... is there anything we can do to get points back?"

"If we do good in class, then we should be able to regain our points. It might help if more people actually show up and pay attention in class. Could you help us spread the word?"

"I'd be happy to. I'll try to inform a few people before the end of lunch, and then I'll go to class and pay attention. I'll let you know if anyone refuses to come or do their work."

"Thanks, Kishite! That would be a big help."

"No problem!"

Next they found Clarisee Perukawa and Mete Tsumi. Their conversation with them went pretty much the same as their conversation with Kishite. They told them the details, and they agreed to spread the word. That was good. Perukawa and Tsumi were very popular, so people should listen to them. Hopefully more people would show up to class now. When they walked into the classroom, they saw Tsumi, Perukawa, Kishite, and a boy named Mirusu, but that's it.

So, including us... Levka thought. 7 out of 12 students showed up to class. Not bad!

Though she couldn't miss the fact that almost half the class still wasn't there.

After class, Levka checked their class total.

Class total: 500

Something about that number bothered her. Their class total at the beginning of the day was 474. Now it was 500. She then realised the two things that bothered her about that number. First of all, that number ended in two zeros. What were the chances of that? It would've made more sense if it was 501, or 499, but 500? It seemed too improbable to be true.

The second thing that bothered her was that they had gained 26 points so quickly. She felt like it should've been harder to gain points. Something weird was going on here...

Not to mention, there was one other thing she had noticed. They gave everyone a quiz to decide who would be in Class E. Why not just use the grades from the entrance exams to decide? Wouldn't that have been more efficient? Or was there a specific reason they had given them that extra quiz?

She decided she would look into it further tomorrow. For now, she needed to get some rest.

Point totals:

Class Total: 500

Katia Levka: 988,364
Toru Lee: 990,342
Analise Mel: 875,516
