The Full Moon
"Well I had fun guys," I explain finishing my meal, "but I best sleep. I'm still sick."
"Goodnight dude," Henry smiles.
"Goodnight guys," I reply.
I head back to my room, coughing. I consider opening up shop, helping people, but I recall Cathrine's face, Henry's face, the worry in their eyes. I... I can't do that to them. I can sleep early if it's to protect someone can't I?
As I close my eyes, I except the same nightmare again, but am greeted by something quite different. I find myself in a ballroom. A dance or event of some sort. Cathrine and I waltz to a melody on a piano before I turn to see Emmret holding posion and approaching the punch bowl. I leave Cathrine and charge, stopping him before he can reach it. Afterwards I return to Cathrine and we proceed. After that, nothing bad happens, and I'm awoken by my alarm clock. I wake up coughing and feeling chilled from a fever, not that leaving the window open helped much. I close the window and decide to rest more. I should be better soon, then I prepare for the full moon...
The full moon arrives quickly, and by then I'm well equipped to handle it. I hang out with Henry prior as the sun slowly sets to trigger the Black Sun Dawn.
"Dammit," Henry sighs, "I'm usually good at first person shooters like this."
"You sure you wanna leave your T.V. and console here?" I inquire taking the controller.
"I'll move it back when Thanksgiving break starts," Henry smiles, "I mean if it's in your dorm it's easy for me to hop in and game with ya. Besides I rarely play this thing. You're basically borrowing this stuff."
"That's fair," I reply.
"So I heard something you may wanna know," Henry explains.
"Trust me," I smirk, "I know about the Halloween party. Know your enemy Henry. It's very important."
"What?" Henry asks, "no. I'm talking about the whole third friend thing. Shelby is an option."
"I'm gonna," I explain, "but only after Halloween, or maybe tonight. I dunno."
"What are you even gonna do about the party?" Henry asks, "call the cops?"
"Cops?" I chuckle, "dude no. The cops didn't give a shit in my town. Why would they care here?"
"Dude this town-" Henry begins to explain only for me to see a green mist creep in the open window.
"Shit wait it's that late?" I think aloud, "man I gotta go!"
"What's the rush?" Henry asks, his flesh slowly shifting into grey stone.
"I'll be right back but this is very important!" I exclaim dashing out the door.
I open the door and look back, to see a confused Henry, made of stone, looking back at me as I enter the lobby, sitting on the couch next to Cathrine as Shelby and Mr. Wensday approach.
"OK," Mr. Wensday explains, "we will be fighting an A+ class sloth demon. If push comes to shove I will buy time for the rest of you to escape. It will likely be in an area relating to sloth or neglect. If anyone of you are not ready, you should probably wait here. This will be incredibly-"
"Is it a threat to kids?" I ask.
"Yes," Mr. Wensday replies, "now-"
"Then we have no choice," I reply, "we have a demon to slay."
No one protests as we all head outside in silence. Everyone deep in thought, deeply afraid of the monster that awaits us. Eventually, as we wander the green mist, we hear the rattling of chains. Now even Mr. Wensday is afraid.
"Who's harboring guilt?" He demands.
"Me all the time," I admit, "why?"
"Is this about Halloween tomorrow?" Cathrine demands, "dammit dude! That thing feeds on guilt!"
"What thing?" I ask.
"You all run!" Mr. Wensday demands, "I should be able to distract that X class... thing. Forget hunting down the A+ class demon. Everyone head to the dorms!"
The rattling of chains grow closer, as Catherine steps up, demanding, "this way!"
Cathrine leads us through the fog and around the back of a school.
"What was that?" I ask.
"Wait they never told you about the Grim Reaper?" Shelby inquires.
"The what?" I ask.
"An X class demon of death," Cathrine explains, "the Grim Reaper. If you linger in one place for to long, or are consumed by guilt, then he will come for you. As far as I know, we can't fight him. We should just head inside and try again next month."
I refuse, "that thing is still out there! I'll go after it with or without you guys! I can't just leave a threat running about!"
"Neither can I," speaks a mocking, deep, slow voice. I look up and see the demon jump off the roof.
"Look out!" I exclaim surrounding Cathrine, the closest to the door, with a magical barrier and enhancing her abilities.
Cathrine leaps back, as the demon lands, a massive, golden, morbidly obese even for his 15 feet tall self, as he sits on a throne held by four, smaller demons that carry it, each one scrawny, with grey skin, only about two feet tall.
"I am the demon that uses their children for self gain," he explains chewing on a hunk of meat on his red pillows, the meat and slobber soaking the cushions below him in a matter most revolting as he odor of his filthy body almost enough to make me puke, "I am the parent who lives through and exploits their children. I am Greed."
"It's disgusting!" I exclaim.
"Great minds think alike," Cathrine replies, "but we have no choice!"
Cathrine fires her gun right into the demon's head, only for the bullet to bounce off it.
"My golden skin is impervious to your human weapons," he taunts, "as long as I have my children I can't lose."
The demon snaps his fingers, causing the demons carrying him to charge at Shelby at a rapid speed, the child at the front left corner drawing a knife and stabbing her in the chest.
"No!" I exclaim rushing over to her, my hands glowing with magical power, closing the wound.
She's quick to get back on her feet.
"Wilson be careful!" Cathrine exclaims, "if you use to much magic you could pass out!"
"It doesn't matter as long as I protect!" I retort casting a spell on Shelby to protect and enhance her abilities.
Shelby attempts to blast Greed with a ball of fire, only for the attack to be deflected.
"Your magics are useless as well children!" He howls with laughter.
"We can't hurt him like this!" Shelby exclaims.
"Wait," I explain, "I have an idea. He said he can't lose with his children and they're not golden. What if we remove them?"
"I got it," Cathrine smirks, as the demon charges her. She leaps over him with superhuman agility and fires a round into the head of one of the demon children in the back!
"My children!" Greed exclaims, Some of his golden flesh turning into a red, rotten meat, like decaying flesh. "How am I supposed to milk them if they're dead? I raised them! They owe me everything!"
"If you loved them then you would know they only thing they owe you is to do their best!" Shelby retorts.
I draw my new weapon, given to me by Mr. Wensday, a short blade made of steel. A katana with a black handle, in which I have engraved a reminder, "never again."
"Shelby I take the left," I explain, "You take right."
Shelby nods as I cast my enhance spell on myself, beginning to feel tired, as if I've been up for days and want nothing more than a good night's rest. Yet this fight is far from over. I can't give out now.
I yawn before we charge, taking out the two children, Shelby crushing one's skull as I impale the other. Greed cries out in agony as the remaining child moves dead center under Greed in order to hold him up.
Greed roars, "you fucking brats should know your place! I'll kill you all!"
"I'll make an opening," I explain, "Cathrine, you pull the child out with that arcane hand. Shelby, when the last bit of gold on that rotten mound of flesh is gone, go in for the kill. OK?"
The two nod.
"So am I leader or we gonna do this sorta thing democracy?" I ask, "cause..."
"Democracy," Shelby replies, "it's just you've been having good ideas."
"Yeah that's what I assumed just clarifying," I reply, "now, let's go!"
Spewing fire the demon charges as Cathrine pulls the last demon out from under him, right into my blade, leaving behind a massive pile of rotten meat, no longer even humanoid save for a clear head area that Shelby crushes with a flaming kick, killing him and turning him into a black mist.
We all look at each other, and smile. We did it. We killed one. We all head inside, weary, but proud as the green mist fades, Mr. Wensday greeting us with a proud smile injured, to which I respond by healing him. He says three words. I've... I've never had them said to me before.
"I'm proud of you," he grins.
I don't react. I'm not sure how, so I just smile, the phrase makes me happy.
"I best sleep," I explain, "I feel like I'm gonna pass out. Also, Shelby, can we be friends?"
Shelby nods, offering a high five I return.
"Goodnight everyone," I smile returning to my room to see Henry looking for me in the halls.
"Where'd ya go?" He asks.
"There was a potenial threat," I explain, "I handled it. I'm tired though. I'm off to bed. Wake me up at eleven if you're up. I do have to adress a threat tomorrow."
"What kinda threat?" Henry asks.
I chuckle, "one that I've dealt with before. Don't worry. Goodnight dude."
"Goodnight," Henry high fives me as I collapse into bed and fall asleep instantly. Once more, no nightmare. In fact, for the first time in forever, I sleep peacefully...
