The Drawing

As I walk through the courtyard under the now bare cherry blossom trees, passing by the many I need to protect as Mr. Nothing. I have so much protect and I just don't know how. How can I save everyone from every form of child abuse? Especially when...

I pass by Emmret, glaring at him, and clenching my fist. The bastard, a wolf in sheep's clothing, and a threat to the ones I care about. I remember Halloween, now, thinking back, dissapointed in myself. Beth is right. Violence against humans is never the answer. I'm glad I made that promise to her. I pass by Emmret and enter the faculty building before finally reacting enter Ms. Evergreen's office.

"Hey Evergreen!" I greet with a smile, "how you doing?"

"I'm doing good," Evergreen replies, "how have you been?"

"Great!" I exclaim, "me and my family went to the pool the other day!"

"Family?" Evergreen asks, confused.

I nod, sitting on the couch as Evergreen turns to face me at her desk, her face holding confusion and slight concern before she sees the drawing, which turns her face into a compassionate smile as she speaks.

"So you love your family," she asks, "Beth, Henry, and Shelby?"

I nod, "I didn't put Cathrine cause I'm dating her and that's different. I don't see my blood family as family. Why would blood ties give them a free pass to be dicks?"

"What about Cathrine?" Evergreen inquires.

"I feel romantic love for Cathrine," I explain, "and I have another friend named Jackie who I think wants to bang my girlfriend? Yet the thought of her doing so doesn't bother me? I don't feel family love for her either. My relationship and feelings for her are... weird so I block it out."

"Well then you have a support system," Evergreen smiles, "that's great. So I want to ask, do you feel you're doing better than you did in your home town?"

"Oh most definitely," I explain, "trust me it's way better than it was back there. If I had bombed that biology test and never came here I would be dead by now."

"So about your home town," Evergreen asks, "how do you feel about it?"

"My home town is a den of abuse in all its forms," I sigh, "when I came here I knew. I knew I had to protect. I became Mr. Nothing. A man with no emotion, no purpose, nothing. I'm not Mr. Nothing to my family, but to help everyone else I am, and if I'm not, what if they see me as a friend and don't want my help? What if they worry about me when I'm trying to protect them?"

Evergreen sighs, "how does being called Mr. Nothing make you feel?"

"Honestly," I sigh, "makes me feel empty and worthless. I feel reminded that in the end I'm just a protector. Me, as a person, I'm just nothing. Mr. Nothing. The one who has to protect everyone from shitty parents and malicious peers. Take Emmret for example. He's a danger, throwing parties with booze. He's the enemy."

"If you don't like being called Mr. Nothing," Evergreen inquires, "then try to open up some. Looking at this drawing, you have one male friend."

"Brother," I correct.

"Right sorry," Evergreen smiles and proceeds, "look, your issue is that you paint yourself as the only one who cares when it's not true. You need to establish yourself as more than nothing. Go meet someone new. OK?"

"Understood," I reply, "I'll be back after."

I begin to get up, but then Evergreen asks, "That's all? Nothing else you wanna tell me? The locket? That all?"

"I'm not ready for that," I sigh.

"OK I don't want to force to talk about anything you don't wanna," Evergreen replies, "You have a great day."

"You too," I reply, leaving and looking at the setting Sun to see it turning black.

I call Cathrine, "hey. Black Sun Dawn. We down for demon hunting?"

"I'll see if Shelby can," Cathrine replies, "it's dangerous to go alone with Sloth so pissed. We need all four of us. I know Jackie can make it, we're actually playing Great Robbery Automobile."

"Well if Shelby isn't up for it I wanna play too," I reply, "on my way. I may get caught outside the dorms for a bit but I can handle some D class demons myself."

"Wilson you know you can't fight with your magic," Cathrine sighs, "even with Guardian's Aura, a demon could kick your ass."

"I'm useless I know," I sigh, "I'll be there soon. Love you."

"Wilson-" she begins to speak, but I hang up. I'm not a fighter. I don't need to be reminded of it.

The Dawn begins, and I begin to wander through the green fog, past the stone statues of those without The Gift. There are no demons, not even a Bitter Sludge. What's going on? There's usually a few F class around. I don't like this...

"Wilson!" A voice roars. Suddenly, a large, masked man wielding a bastard sword, wearing a black shirt and jeans. His build is strong, like a stone wall, bulky, and poweful. Without magic he would kick my ass and if he had magic and wanted to kick my ass
I would be screwed.

"Speaking," I reply, looking at his green mask, "Who are you?"

"I am a Child of the Dawn!" He exclaims, "a follower of Reverly, and I have come to kill you! People have the right to choose if their kids drink and it's not harmful! What you did Halloween..."

I don't recall what happened next. I saw red, blacked out, and woke up in the hospital with a broken arm, leg, a get well soon card by my bed from what I assume to be those I help, (It says "Get well soon Mr. Nothing") and Jackie at my bedside.

"Who did this to you?" She demands, anger in her voice, "who hurt you Wilson?"

"Uhhhh..." I reply, "does Children of the Dawn mean anything to you?..."
