Erasers and Horses

Kai's POV

My third class of the day was Spanish. One of my only classes with Jay.

I wonder how he got on in detention- that Chen can be a monster. No, he is a monster!

I pulled out my sketchbook and started to draw Mr. Chen, reimagined. I gave him tiny fangs, and a few scales. I drew weird bone hat on his head, with a sort of purple boa draped on it. Instead of legs and feet, I gave him a snake tail. Then, I coloured him purple.

I smiled to myself. Jay, Lloyd and maybe Zane were going to love this.

I heard a thump next to me. I looked to the right to see Jay dumping his bag on the ground.

"How was detention?" I asked.

"Not that bad, actually," he replied, just as our Spanish teacher, Ms. Woods, walked in. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "Carnivorous Chen had to take care of something, so he wasn't there! Taylor- she got detention too- and I just talked, and I found out-" then, he clamped his mouth shut.

"You found out what?" I asked.

"Nothing," he mumbled as he turned to face the front. "Forget it."

"Buenos dias, class," Ms. Woods said. "Now, today, I am going to teach you about animals and classroom objects."

"Get ready for an hour of confusion," Jay muttered.

I smiled, then slipped him the drawing. He studied it, then grinned at me.

"Great likeness," he whispered. I laughed.

"Stop talking," our teacher said, speaking to no one in particular. "Now, let's begin..."

Ms. Woods went through a PowerPoint of domestic animals, getting us (the class) to repeat everything she said.

"We sound like zombies," Jay said. "Uuunnn conn ehh hooo," he moaned.

I sniggered. "Dooossss conn ehh hoooss."

"What does that even mean?" Jay asked.

"Stop talking," Ms. Woods repeated. Jay and I quietened down.

Then we did the same thing for classroom objects. PowerPoint. Ms. Woods pronounced it perfectly. We droned it like zombies.

I started doodling a zombie class. There were eyeballs dangling, brains oozing, and lots of green skin.

"What I don't get," Jay told me. "Is why they think these words will be useful. I mean, nobody talks about classroom objects! Or animals...well, maybe that, but still."

"Of course we'll need to use these words," I said sarcastically. "For when our erasers decide to ride our horses away into Spain. We'll need to put up Spanish notices!"

Jay laughs.

"Let's see..." I think for a bit. "Um...Wanted: Las gomas riding un caballos into the sunset...Reward: cinco dollars."

Jay laughs again, louder this time.

"Jay! Kai! Silencio, por favor. Honestly..." Ms. Woods snapped. "Can't keep quiet for two seconds..."

She had pressed our mute button. We didn't speak for the rest of the lesson (which must've been quite a feat for Jay!).


A/n: Here are the translations for the Spanish words (I'm assuming most of you don't speak Spanish...)

Las gomas-  erasers
Un caballo-  a horse
Cinco-  five
Silencio, por favour- Silence, please

When Jay and Kai were zombie speaking, they were saying, "un conejo" and "dos conejos" which is pronounced "coneho".

Sorry if the Spanish and/or the translations aren't accurate...I only learnt a bit of Spanish in school.
