3 - Questionnaire
Maya
My eyes are trained on Sam as they stand on the metal table, their height being around the length of my pinky. Sam seems pretty unsure of what to do, as if debating to either sit or stand.
"Let's see." Sam begins. "My name is Sam Perez and I'm nearly sixteen years old. Oh, and I've been partnered up with someone over fifteen times my size that I only met today. How 'bout you?"
"Maya Sparvel," I reply, an amused smile appearing on my lips. "Also fifteen and partnered with a finger-lengthed person."
"Hey! I'm not finger-lengthed!" Sam outburst in return to my comment. I place my hand on the table next to them, palm up, and point my index straight upwards so it shows their size compared to my finger. Sam seems annoyed at the fact that they are indeed finger-lengthed. Sam mutters something under their breath, probably curses, as they fold their arms and looks at me with an unimpressed expression.
"Aww come on, don't be like that." I tease, nudging them with a finger. Sam grabs it with their right hand - which is seemingly impossibly small - and gives it a pat with her left.
"We're pretty hopeless at this whole introduction thing, aren't we?" Sam asks, exasperated.
"Pretty much. How about you tell me about when you were signing up for the school?" I ask, attempting to keep the awkward silences at bay.
"Well," they begin. "My mum and I went to see Mr Rith at another school where he told me that it'd be both a boarding school and a school with you enormen, but not about the partners or boarding with said enormen or anything like that."
"Yeah, same here but I spoke with Mrs Giana rather than Mr Rith."
Silence.
"What about your family?" Sam asks as we both desperately try to salvage and maintain the conversation.
"Oh, I have my mum, dad, younger brother and two elder sisters, twins, in fact. How about you?"
"I'm an only child, it's just my mum and me."
"No dad?"
"No dad, he left us for a model in another country. Last I heard he's in hospital but he still hasn't tried to reconnect with us. It's not like I feel sorry for him anyway, he took a majority of the money he shared with my mum and left her in a real state of finical trouble."
"Oh." Was all I could say.
"I'm sorry," Sam starts after hearing my response. "I went on a little rant there, it's a bad habit and I'll try to stop doing it-"
I cut her off. "It's fine, I don't mind listening, and at least it got you talking." I finish with a smile. "Is your mum alright now?"
"Yeah, she's better than ever and recovered fully from the situation she left him in," They say, seeming relieved that I let them get it off their chest. "even if it did take her three years with two jobs at a time."
"She sounds like an amazing woman," I say, resting my head in my arms.
"She is, she's amazing and smart and strong. I'm glad she is though, anyone else probably would've cracked under the pressure."
"Do you have any memories of him? Of your dad?"
Sam thinks about their response, seeming unhappy.
"Yeah," She replies after the moment. "He left when I was about six, so I can remember a few times that he was around. He wasn't a good dad back then, either. He kind of just said 'Hi' and that was it."
Sam lets out a satisfied sigh, probably happy that someone let them vent. I look around the cafeteria but I don't see anyone I know, Sam does the same but notices someone.
Sas waves towards an enorman and a human - a boy and a girl respectively -, and the human says something to her partner while she points towards us, and they walk over. The male enorman takes the seat opposite me, and the human on his shoulder climbs down and greets Sam. The two humans greet each other as friends, then the new human introduces the new enorman as "Sam this is Luke, Luke this is Sam."
The two shake hands, well, shake hand and index. Sam then turns introduces me. "This is Maya."
"Hi there," I respond with a smile.
"And this is Sakiya."
Sakiya extends her hand and we shake in the same way as Sam and Luke.
Luke has short, shaggy brown hair, with streaks of fairy floss blue. He wears the same white shirt as me, but his is a button-up while mine isn't, with the school logo imprinted onto the breast pocket.
The logo itself is blue and shield-shaped, with a white book in the middle and two black outlines of humanoid shapes, one on each page. The first outline is larger than the second, meant to represent the enorman of the school, and the second represents the humans. The students of the school and them learning (the book) about their differences, but also their similarities.
"Hi there, Luke," I say, to the enorman sitting opposite me.
"Hey." He replies, a twinkle in his . . . purple eyes. I don't realise I'm still staring until Luke talks. "So Sam, how do you and Sakiya know each other?"
"Oh," Sam replies. "we sat together at the assembly and met there. That's pretty much it." Sakiya nods in agreement.
"Interesting," Luke replies. "Sakiya and I just were both waiting after the assembly, so a teacher put us together and that was it."
Introductions out of the way, I look around at our little group and to others, this one question still on my mind. I turn back to humans on the table, hoping they have an answer.
"Does anyone have any clue at what we're supposed to be doing now?" I ask.
Everyone exchanges glances before responding.
"Not a single clue," Sam responds, shrugging.
"Nope." Adds Luke.
"A teacher gave me a timetable." Says Sakiya suddenly. "Didn't you guys get one?"
