Chapter 3 – Chloe's P.O.V.

Clamping my hands over my ears, I rocked back and forth helplessly on the comfortable and large bed. Tears trickled down my cheeks, but I hardly noticed them anymore. They've become a large part of my life. So has fear and hatred. They both mix together to form an uneasy ball of hell, but they both bubble inside me nonetheless.

            "Stop fighting us."

I shook my head rapidly at the sound of the dark voices again, my heart picking up speed. "I-I'm n-not," I stammered vulnerably.

"Do it," they whispered, their hot breath sending shivers down my spine as it collided against my cold skin.

"I-I don't w-want to," I choked out, my tears coming harder.

"Do it!" they screamed and I knew it was better not to frustrate them. I still couldn't help it as I panicked, an ear piercing scream escaping my trembling lips.

Harry's P.O.V.

My eyes flew open to the loud scream that rang through my ears. Cautiously, I sat up in bed and raked a hand through my hair. It was two in the morning, who would be screaming? My eyes widened in realization as I quickly slung the covers off, barging out the room.

Chloe hadn't come out the room since Elizabeth's little stunt. I tried to knock on the door and talk to her, but she just kept mumbling for me to leave her alone. She didn't come down to eat, and I haven't even seen her come out for the restroom. But nonetheless, the door was still closed and another shriek traveled through the wood.

"Chloe? Chloe, are you all right?" I asked frantically, knocking lightly on the door.

            No answer.

"Chloe, just tell me you're okay," I begged.

            Still no answer.

Remembering that she was classified as "insane" and was completely unpredictable, I sighed loudly and opened the door, praying she wasn't naked and wouldn't scream at me. My fear only worsened when I saw the balcony doors open, Chloe sitting on the rail. Her nails were digging into the metal as she wrapped her legs around the small poles holding up the rail.

"C-Chloe, what are you doing?" I sputtered, completely bewildered at the scene before me.

            She was trying to jump.

I heard a loud sniff come from her direction, but she quickly shook her head without turning around.

How the fuck do you deal with something like this? You talk to them calmly, right? You try to get them to weigh out their options, don't you? I guess it's worth a shot. "Chloe, it isn't safe up there," I told her in a calm and gentle voice. "Come back over here, please."

            Chloe shook her head again.

"Chloe, love, you might fall. It's very dangerous to sit there," I reasoned, but she shook her head once more.

"T-they won't let me come down," she whispered in a voice that was almost inaudible.

With her back towards me, it was easy to slowly inch over to her. If she was going to jump, I needed to be prepared to catch her. "Remember what we said about them?" I asked, trying to play along with the whole "they" thing. "They aren't very nice if they want you to hurt yourself," I said softly. "Please come down and you can talk to me about whatever that's bothering you, yeah?"

"I-I can't," she stammered, audibly sobbing as her hands tightened on the rail. "I-I have to do this."

"Chloe, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do," I told her in my still gentle voice. "Just please come down from there." I couldn't describe the fear I was feeling. My heart was pounding in my chest rapidly, and even though I only met this girl this morning, it feels like I've known her my entire life. People call her crazy, I call her confused. People call her childlike, I call her adorable.

Chloe hesitated, then she shook her head again. "I have to do this," she whispered in a dark voice, almost scaring the absolute shit out of me.

"Do you want to do this?" I asked her softly. At this point, I was inches away from wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her back into the room. However, I didn't want to anger or startle her, so I patiently stood there, still on alert as I watched her twitching hands.

"No," Chloe whispered after a long silence. "I-I don't want to."

"Then come inside, please," I said gently, my voice cracking mid-sentence as her hands looked like they were loosening. "You don't have to do this, Chloe. You can talk to me about whatever is bothering you. I'll stay with you, if you want me to."

Chloe was silent again, but then she croaked out in a hoarse voice, "Promise?"

I nodded, even though she wasn't looking at me. "I promise, Chloe. I'll stay with you and you can talk to me. Just don't do this."

Chloe's cries grew louder, then she slowly nodded her head. "O-okay," she whispered, her voice cracked from her cries.

Before Chloe could change her mind, I quickly enfolded my arms around her and pulled her back off the rail. She turned in my arms, sobbing into my chest as I sat on the ground from her fear. She was gripping my shoulder tightly since I wasn't wearing a shirt, but I didn't mind her wet tears as they rolled down my chest. Instead, I shushed her softly and gently stroked her hair.

"It's okay," I whispered, continuing my shushing. "You're okay."

Chloe nodded against my skin, but her sobs kept coming incessantly. As I comfortingly stroked her hair and shushed her, realization hit me.

            I'm holding Chloe.

Chloe doesn't like touching, yet she's letting me hold her while she cries. She doesn't like touching, yet she's squeezing my shoulder for dear life. This girl is troubled, I know that much, but she isn't crazy. If she were crazy, she wouldn't be clutching onto me, completely terrified. She wouldn't have listened to me about jumping. She wouldn't be crying and looking so vulnerable. She would've jumped, not caring about my warning. She would've ended herself if she were crazy, but she didn't. Chloe may not be completely normal, but she's not completely insane, either.

"Come on, love. You need to get some sleep," I told her quietly, still twirling her hair in my fingers as her sobs slowly subsided.

Chloe nodded against my chest again, but she didn't stand. I almost smiled as I situated her in my arms, then hauled both of us off the ground. I carried Chloe inside, closing the balcony door with my foot. She was still holding my shoulder, still nuzzling her face in my neck as I gently laid her down on the bed.

"D-don't leave me a-alone, please," she stammered, her watery eyes boring into mine.

"I won't, love. I promised I'd stay with you," I said, then pried her hands from around my neck. Chloe seemed hesitant to let go at first, but then she slowly laid on her back as she saw me sit in the chair next to the bed. "Do you want to talk about it?" I asked quietly as she gnawed on her bottom lip, staring at the ceiling.

            She shook her head.

"All right," I said, nodding as I didn't want to push her. "Are you okay now?"

Chloe nodded, but then jerked her head to look at me.

"I'm not leaving, Chloe," I chuckled lightly. "Relax, love. Just close your eyes and rest." Chloe weakly nodded and I kept my promise, staying by her bedside all night, not even sleeping a wink as my mind wandered in curiosity.
