In today's modern age the idea of plural marriage is looked down upon especially in our Pakistani and Indian cultures where a second marriage is a taboo. We are disgusted by the man who has two wives and we pity the first wife. Worse we end up concluding the second wife was a 'slut' to entice the married man.

But Allah's laws says otherwise – a man can have up to four wives at one given point in his life. Why would Allah say this when we in society feel it is a disgraceful act? Allah is our Creator. He knows the weakness of a man. There is wisdom behind this law.

In today's society, fornication, extra marital affairs and indulging in pornography has become common. Why? If a man has a desire for more than one woman, does that mean he goes the haram way? As a wife, one should help him walk on the Straight Path and if she sees this weakness in her husband then urge him for the second marriage. At least, he will not be indulge in haram activities. The wife would know that he isn't gone to some sleazy club making out with some random woman but rather is at his second wife's home.

Many feel shocked of my views. In fact, during my last holiday I spoke up to my father. He had an amused smile and said "Do tell your mother of your views." My mother knows but she doesn't agree with me. Now many would ask what about my husband? He knows of my views but so far, has no plans for second marriage. He says one wife has been too hard to manage with two I will go crazy.

Now that is the thing. The biggest condition Allah has set for men to have more than one wife is to be just. This is very important. If a man fears he cannot be just then he shouldn't think of second marriage at all and control his nafs (desires).

It is also a concluded fact that there are more women than men on the planet. Therefore, when having more than one wife helps a man support these women who may otherwise may not be able to support themselves. Furthermore, in today's turmoil world where terrorism and wars are a norm around the globe, there are many widows. The concept of plural marriage helps a man to support a widow and give her a respectable position in society.

This was a little thought provoking issue for all the young women out there that inshaa Allah someday will marry. We need to have open minds regarding plural marriage.

Remember Allah is the All-Wise.
