Chapter 25
Jungkook's POV
My hand gently ran through her tangled locks of hair, separating the snags caused by her earlier tossing and turning. She cried herself to sleep against my chest, and I made sure to stay right beside her. Chau flipped onto her back, allowing me to see her swollen and red face. Dried tear tracks stained her cheeks, while some tear droplets were stuck in her long eyelashes. Sitting up right beside her, I cleaned her eyelashes free of the tears with the pads of my thumbs. Frowning slightly, I softly pecked her forehead.
"Tears don't suit you baby girl," I whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
Slowly slipping off of the bed, I pulled the blanket up and over her, tucking her in. I smiled as she snuggled into the white duvet, mumbling fumbled words. I've noticed how cute Chau is when she's asleep; she's like a little munchkin kitten falling asleep in the palm of your hand. During most nights, she snuggles up to my side, and my arms naturally wrap around her because it feels right to do so.
Throwing on a hoodie that was hanging on her desk chair, I quietly headed towards the door. Opening it, it creaked a little, just like when you step on an old wooden step and it groans. I looked over my shoulder back at Chau, and she was still asleep, her body sprawled across the mattress. Sighing to myself, I quickly stepped out into the hallways and slowly shut the door behind me. Once I was in the hall, I walked down the hallway, my bare feet padding against the cold wooden floor. The night lights lighting up the hallway guided me towards the stairs, my shadow following quickly behind me.
As I walked down the stairs, the quiet sounds of voices reached my ears. My eyebrows furrowed together, recognizing the pitches and tones of the voices. The Nam siblings shouldn't be here, they should be in Busan for some business, after all, they told me in person. Not to mention it was almost midnight, Jaehee and Minhyuk should at least be sleeping by this time. Reaching the main floor, I followed the soft glow of the dining room lights and ducked underneath the kitchen counter.
"How is Jungkook doing?" Jiyeon Hyung asked. "Is he protecting Minji?"
Jaehee chuckled softly, setting down what I assumed to be a coffee mug by the sound of the porcelain cup hitting the table.
"He's doing more than protecting her Oppa," she spoke thoughtfully. "He's in love with her, I can see it in his eyes every time he looks at her."
"Ooooh!" Yoojung squealed. "My ship is sailing! It's been years since I've seen an agent fall in love with their protectee, oh I'm so happy for those two!"
I felt my cheeks become warm with Noona's excitement. She had been shipping us this entire time?! Well, I guess it was a given, we're always together, even at home.
"How about at home?" Jiyeon asked.
"Jungkook lives with us now," Minhyuk confessed. "He doesn't go home anymore, and we don't blame him. Mr. Jeon doesn't care about his absence, neither does his brother."
I felt a pit in my stomach after hearing about those two I despise so much. With all my time being devoted to Chau and protecting her, I've completely forgotten about them. Chau lifted that cloud off of my shoulders the moment I laid my eyes on her, and I knew that I would feel safe with her. I'm the one who's supposed to protect her, yet I feel like she's my beautiful little guardian angel. She's brought light into my life and I'm thankful to her for accepting my feelings towards her.
"We promised him that we would take care of him because he's done so much for Minji. Jungkook is the best she can have in her life."
"That's good to hear," Jiyeon hummed in satisfaction.
Walking back upstairs, I let them continue on with their conversation. Deep down, I was worried about whether or not I was fulfilling their expectations. I am the youngest agent in the WPP, and there was a lot of weight on my back. The higher-ups expected a lot of me, and I was dreading not fulfilling their expectations while protecting Chau. Jiyeon and Yoojung were in charge of Chau's case, and they were the ones who assigned me to her. However, it sounded like they were pleased with how I was doing.
I just hope they let me stay with Chau, even after this is over.
Shutting the bedroom door closed, I heard incoherent mumbling. Quickly taking off my sweater, I quickly walked towards Chau as she was tossing and turning once again. Climbing onto the bed, I cupped her cheeks and told her that I was here for her. She opened her eyes slightly, forcing me to see hurt eyes.
"Where did you go...?" she whimpered.
"I'm sorry Chau, I just went downstairs," I apologized. "But I'm here now, its okay."
Laying down beside her, I wrapped my arms around her body and pulled her close. She tucked her face into my chest, feeling the warmth radiating off of me.
"Don't leave me... please..." she muttered as she fell back asleep.
Pecking her forehead, I tightened my hold around her.
"I won't Minji," I whispered. "I promise."
