Chapter 10
The sun peeked over the horizon, making Mistpaw's fur shine like snow at dawn. She stood in the middle of the camp, waiting for her mentor, Owlfeather, to wake up. Mistpaw was hoping to get some battle practice in before they continued exploring the territory, in case she ran into any rouges that she had made enemies with as a kit. Mistpaw didn't like to admit it, but at times she had stolen from other rouges. It was hard, being a kit in the forest, and she couldn't see her sister get so sick again. Mistpaw frowned, wondering if the rouges would remember the kit who had stolen from them so many times. It had started off with just the remains of whatever the rouges had eaten. But as Mistpaw and Frostpaw had gotten older, and gotten bigger, the remains of the prey weren't good enough anymore. So, her and Frostpaw made a plan. They would target a cat who had just come back from a hunt, and then Frostpaw would pretend to be injured. Most rouges would check on the tiny kit, and the ones who didn't would see her as easy prey. While Frostpaw put on her act, Mistpaw would sneak behind the rouge and steal whatever prey he had caught. Then they would both take off running until they found a place to hide. Oftenly when they did this, they would hide in a newly abandoned fox den that they had found, as the scent of the fox would hide their scent, and the prey's scent.
They had done this many times, and it was a wonder they had not been caught. Still, Mistpaw doubted that the rouges would let them off the hook just because they were in a clan now. Frowning, she turned to the den that Owlfeather was sleeping in and decided to wake her up. She padded into the den, and gently poked her with a paw. "Owlfeather? Owlfeather, can you please wake up?" she said. Owlfeather groaned and rolled over to face her. "What is it, Mistpaw?" she asked, sounding a bit exasperated. "I was wondering if you could help me train a bit? In case we run into any rouges while we are traveling?" Mistpaw said, a bit nervous that her mentor would find it stupid of her to worry that much. "If we do run into rouges, you have three warriors to protect you. And I assume you have a bit of fighting experience, given your life as a rouge?" she responded calmly, but Mistpaw thought she heard a hint of annoyance in her voice. She nodded, not wanting her mentor to think she was weak. "Well then, you'll be fine. Now please let me rest. We have to finish showing you the territory today." Owlfeather said, rolling back over. Mistpaw frowned, deciding that she at least had to practice the battle moves she already knew on her own. She padded back out into the clearing and began practicing the moves that she had learned in Death Pack.
The sun was high in the sky before the other cats woke up, and Mistpaw ached all over from practicing her battle moves on a log she found at the end of camp. One of her claws was especially sore, as she had snagged her claw on a piece of bark. But she felt better. More safe. "Are you ready to finish exploring the territory?" Amberriver asked, her voice quick and excited. Frostpaw came out of the den, followed by Shadepaw. "You know I do!" Frostpaw purred. Twistedwillow lifted himself to his paws with a bit of effort. Mistpaw could still hear Owlfeather snoring from the den. "Owlfeather! Get up!" Amberriver yelled at her excitedly. As Owlfeather groggily climbed out of the den, Mistpaw thought she heard her mumble, "Any cat would think that it was you exploring the territory for the first time. Ignoring the comment, Amberriver bounded over to the entrance of the camp,"Let's Go." Sighing, Twistedwillow limped after her, Owlfeather at his side. Shadepaw and Frostpaw excitedly ran after Amberriver, but Mistpaw trailed behind calmly at the same speed as her mentor. Why are Shadepaw and Frostpaw still acting like kits? We're apprentices now! We need to have a bit more....I don't know, but we need to act more mature then they are acting. Mistpaw thought, shaking her head.
The moors looked very different from the forest. There was only a few trees in the distance. Mistpaw honestly thought it was much more beautiful. Frostpaw and Shadepaw, however, had a different opinion. "It's so....empty here." Shadepaw said to Frostpaw. "I know. It's boring. There's nothing to see except for grass!" Frostpaw replied. They continued on like this for a while, and Mistpaw tried to tune them out that way she could focus. It's so peaceful here. And I can see the birds so clearly in the sky. It's not like there is nowhere to hide if you needed to, either. Tons of thickets and tall grass. Weird, the grass feels different here. It feels more springy. I would want to live in a place like this, if I were still a rouge. It is strange, though. I thought I would have seen a rouge all ready. She took a deep breath, trying to take in the whole of this beautiful place. But....something wasn't right. There was a weird scent mingled in with the scent of the territory. No sooner than she had pinpointed what it was, she heard a voice behind her. "Hey! What are you all doing in our territory?"
