“Daniel, breakfast is ready!”
Daniel Howell, son of the church priest and his wife, along with his 2 other sisters. Dan loved his home, his family, just everything. He didn’t believe in hate, misbehavior, rebellion, dressing dark, and love of the same gender. He was raised this way, so it was all he knew.
Dan slowly sat up in his bed, hearing his mother call from downstairs.
“Daniel Howell! Get up, you’re going to be late for school!”
How could he forget? Today was the first day of his Junior year of high school. He was only 16, and like any other teenager in his ward, he was excited for his first day. His father would be teaching this year at the church, and he couldn’t wait to be greeted with much admiration from the other kids. His father was the best priest around, so it would make sense that he was student leader of the town’s church.
“Coming, mum!” Dan called out.
He quickly stood up and started to get dressed in his best church clothes. He looked in the mirror and fixed his curly fringe before quickly heading down to get his breakfast. He loved his mother’s cooking, she worked at the family bakery. But this was England, so who didn’t work at a bakery, honestly?
His mother kissed his cheek before setting his food down in front of him. “Eat up Daniel, I hear your father is waiting for you.”
Dan was happy to hear his father was waiting for him. His father never really talked to him much, for reason Dan didn’t know.
He quickly gulped down his food before setting his plate in the sink.
“Mum, I’m leaving!” he shouted to his mother from the other room.
She quickly came out and helped him put on his jacket and bag.
“I’m going to be driving you and your sisters to the church, so go warm up the car for me dear.” she spoke softly before running to get his younger sisters.
He quickly warmed up the car and helped his youngest sister Jessica into her car seat before heading to the passenger side.
“Becky, I ride in the front today. I’m the oldest.” His 15 year-old sister rolled her eyes at him before getting out into the back seat. “Fine, but I call front tomorrow!”
Dan laughed lightly as he clicked himself in the seat. His mother drove them off to the church down the block, and dropped them off.
Dan helped his sister out of her car seat and walked inside as Becky left to her own age group. Dan left his sister at her group as well before heading off to his, the one his father was teaching this year.
He walked inside and took a seat near the back. Usually, he would sit in the front, but he felt like this would be the best option today.
He watched his father take place at the front pedestal as the church bells rang.
“As you guys know, I’m the new teacher for group age 17 and 18. I hope we can get along well, as we have new kids joining us this year.”
Dan followed his father’s gaze to the kid in the bench next to his. This kid really did look out of town. He had long, straight black hair and icy blue eyes. His skin was pale white, Dan was surprised he wasn’t sparkling like that one vampire movie he’d seen before. His clothes seemed nice, if he had the shirt tucked in and his tie tightened. As comfortable as he looked, Dan got this weird feeling off of him, as if he wasn’t everything he seemed to be.
“Let’s start with our morning prayers. Who will come up to say them?”
Without even hesitating, everyone turned back to look at Dan.
Dan slowly stood up. He didn’t want to mess up and embarrass his father.
He slowly slid out from his bench and made his way to the pedestal. He stood looking out at everyone as they all held their hands, ready for prayer. Dan eyed the new kid once more, noticing he was looking up at Dan, waiting.
Dan quickly looked away and said his prayer. On his way back to his seat, he saw the new kid smirking at him. Dan suddenly felt his cheeks heat up. He didn’t know why he was blushing, it must be from embarrassment of the prayer.
He sat down where he was before and kept his head bowed down.
-
“You were good.”
Dan jumped at the voice next to him, quickly looking up to see the new kid. Dan felt his heart beating faster, he had no idea why. His cheeks were growing warmer with it.
“H-hey, I’m Daniel..” he stammered out. Why was he having troubles talking suddenly?!
The new kid smiled at him. “Hey, I’m Philip, but just call me Phil.”
His voice was so calm and sweet, like honey rolling off his tongue. Dan wanted to hear him talk more.
“Y-you can just call me Dan.” he faltered a smile.
Phil laughed, looking up at Mr. Howell before turning back to Dan. “Is he your dad?” Dan lightly nodded, his hands going into his sleeves and becoming paws.
Phil noticed. He didn’t know why Dan was embarrassed, but it was funny to see, so he scooted just slightly closer to see Dan’s reaction. It was as he expected, Dan’s heart beated faster and he just watched Phil get closer.
“That’s cute..” he said to himself, causing Dan to cover his blushing face.
Phil pulled his hands away, looking him in the eyes and smiling. Dan couldn’t take it, and felt his heart practically explode. He froze in Phil’s hands. He starting eyeing Phil’s features. His blue eyes, down his pale cheeks, to his lips. Dan stayed there a second, not realizing he was.
Phil smiled and pulled away before standing up.
“Wh-what are you doing?” Dan freaked out that he did something wrong.
Phil shook his head. “Bells rang.”
Dan realised everyone leaving as well. He quickly stood up, almost falling over as he made his way out of the bench. Phil smiled as he watched Dan falling over himself on his way out.
Once Dan made his way to Phil, he left. Leaving Dan standing there.
Dan quickly head out of the church and made his way home, knowing his sisters got out before him and were already home.
He didn’t even realise he was swooning over Phil on his way home, repeating what happened and memorising his face.
Dan didn’t know why he felt this way, or what he was feeling in the first place. Maybe it’s what you feel when you make new friends? That must be why.
Once he was home, his mother greeted him at the door. “So, how was your day, sweetie?”
He smiled to her and told her it was great, before heading to eat his dinner.
The rest of the dinner, his family talked to one another while Dan fantasized about many scenarios. One came up that made Dan scared.
-
“Dan, I want to tell you something..”
Dan nodded and Phil leaned in closer to him. Dan didn’t want to move. In fact, he was anticipating what would happen next.
Dan looked into Phil’s icy blue eyes, shining from the moon sitting in the black abyss above them, before slowly closing his eyes as Phil had.
Suddenly he felt something soft against his lips.
-
Soft against his lips..
Dan opened his eyes to see he had his fork and food to his mouth about to eat, but Dan had decided to kiss his food instead.
All of his family at the table had been staring at him confused. His youngest sister, Jessica, starting mocking him by kissing her food as well. Dan started blushing in embarrassment.
His mother laughed. “Dan honey, are you okay?”
“He was probably thinking about that pretty girl that’s new to his ward today. I’m positive he saw her.” His father winked at his son.
Dan didn’t say anything and just quickly stood up and excused himself before practically running up to his room before slamming the door shut and locking it. He sat down on the side of his bed slowly, thoughts running everywhere though his mind.
He had been about to kiss Phil. In a daydream, of course, but still.
What was he thinking?! He can’t kiss a guy! That’s against the bible and everything he was raised to think!
Then he stopped. He was raised to think that way, not his own way.
Dan quickly shook the thought from his mind. He shouldn’t be thinking bad about the way he was raised. It was the best way to be raised, any other way would be wrong and they would worship the devil instead of god.
He lied down on his bed, covering himself in his sheets. He needed to get the day out of his mind, or else he would make it awkward between him and his new friend. And with that in his head, he drifted to sleep.
His mother downstairs, thinking about him. Thinking about the doubt of whether it really was the girl he was thinking about, scared.
