Luke is fourteen, and his brother Josh is four. Their violent, alcoholic father moves back in after four years of peace, and Luke is terrified for his brother's safety. Josh is on the receiving end of several of their Dad's violent moods, and then strange things begin to happen. Objects are broken, all of them their Dad's, and peculiar marks and footprints appear in Josh's room.

Josh blames his "friend from the woods," Muckilly Gog. Luke and their Mum think it's his anger at his Dad coming out, and try to cover it up. But Muckilly isn't going to be ignored forever...
