Helping the Sheep Man

"This doesn't seem to be the brightest of ideas...what makes you think we can trust your informant?" Jasper called out from his horse not too far behind Scarlett's horse.

Riding out to meet the informant was part of Charles plan, having the rest of the gang go along with his was certainly not. However Jasper was determined to follow wherever Scarlett went and she wasn't about to let Charles go out alone again especially since he would have information she needed. Trying her best not to roll her eyes at Jasper's statement Scarlett instead focused on Charles who rode before her.

"You didn't have to come, I repeated that to you more than once brother. If you hate the journey so much then turn around and go back." Charles said as he settled into his saddle.

Henry watched from the end of the line of the gang as the two brothers bickered back and forth. Shaking his head he tried to pay them no mind but after a while it was becoming more than aggravating. Those two could take any situation and turn it into an argument, though it was hot and they really had no idea where they were going even he began to wonder what Charles might be up to.

Jasper still arguing with Charles rode up beside his brother making it so that Scarlett was now with Henry.

"You would think those two have argued since birth." Henry commented to his friend with a sigh.

"My sisters and I would do that, only when it came to something we really wanted. With those two though it seems like they argue just to argue. Maybe it's a guy thing?" Scarlett shrugged as she looked to Henry who narrowed his eyes at her.

"I am a man too Scar, sheesh you seem to forget that." Henry scoffed as the trotted forward on the dirt path before them.

"I have never forgotten that Henry, I guess I just don't think of you the same as other men..." Scarlett said with a worn sigh until they saw a house out in the distance. "Now who would live all the way out in the middle of nowhere?"

"Maybe someone who didn't want to be found?" Henry wondered as he looked at the house. "Looks pretty old though, from this distance that it...but surrounded by sheep?"

That's when they all heard a shot ring out from the house. The sheep made a run for it and darted as far away from the house as they could. Everyone stopped their horses in their tracks and looked over to the house. The door opened and a blonde woman in a dark brown skirt held the gun and exited the house but looked back into the home.

"You stay the hell away from me! You no good sheep farmer! I hate this life and I hate you!" she spat and then turned on her heel and walked to the barn.

There waiting seemed to be a group of men who if I didn't know any better seemed to be a group of outlaws. One flick of her wrist and they all surrounded the house, each with a torch in hand.

"They're going to kill the farmer!" Scarlett called out to Jasper and Charles.

"That's their business." Jasper shrugged not caring about the farmer.

Charles rolled his eyes and shook his head but Scarlett looked over and Henry and he knew from the look in her eyes she was about to do something stupid.

"Scar...come on now..." Henry said inching closer to her horse.

Before he could grab the reigns though she took off straight for the house. Charles looked to Henry then back to where Scarlett was heading and quickly followed her. Jasper stayed still but Henry also followed the new path that Scarlett was blazing. Scarlett was a red head, therefore most of thinking she did after her actions, that was just the way she was. Riding around the house and getting the men's attention seemed to work and once she got to the barn she quickly dismounted the horse and jumped into a tall bale of hay. Henry and Charles were still keeping the men busy by making them chase them around the property.

"HELP!" a male voice called out from the house.

Escaping the bale of hay, Scarlett made her way to the barn door and looked around to make sure the woman wasn't within sight. Lucky for her the others seemed to be well occupied. Making a run for the house, Scarlett threw her whole body through the back door and into the house that was slowly beginning to burn. Standing up and looking around the place was just a one room cabin, it shouldn't be hard to find anyone in here...yet she couldn't find a soul.

"HELLO?!" Scarlett called out keeping her arm over her mouth to avoid inhaling smoke the best she could.

"I'M IN HERE! SHE LOCKED ME IN THE CUBOARD!" the male voice called out through coughs again.

Running to the only shaking cabinet she could see, Scarlett grabbed the door and opened it easily. It wasn't locked so why was he having trouble escaping? Looking into the cabinet she got her answer. A middle aged man with short dark brown almost black hair was bound up in the cabinet. Taking the spare knife her daddy gave her, Scarlett made short work of the binds.

"Either I am dead or you are one hell of an angel miss." The man commented as he looked Scarlett over.

"I'm not angel and you aren't dead.. yet...come on." Scarlett smiled brightly offering her hand to the man.

Not hesitating at all, the man grabbed her hand and they made their way through the burning house, getting to the back door they both went outside to see the same woman from before standing there, hands on her hips but her men and Henry and Charles no where to be seen.

"Who do you think you are lady?" the woman questioned Scarlett.

"In this case I would say I am the knight and he is the damsel in distress." Scarlett said as she looked from the woman to the man and back to the woman.

"Why didn't you let him die? This wasn't your business to interfere with." The blonde said with the roll of her eyes.

"I don't think its your business to decided when it's a man's time to die. No matter what he may have done to ya." Scarlett said as she saw a wave behind the woman and only looked long enough to see it was Jasper reading his gun.

"You don't know shit lady, all you did was buy him time until now. Now I will be more than happy to end him myself and just throw the body into the fire." She laughed as she took out her pistol and pointed it at the man.

"I can't let you do that." Scarlett said stepping in front of the man and blocking him the best she could with her own body.

"Oh...you think you can save him alone? Too bad because I can shoot you just as easy...no one to save you girly." She smiled and readied the gun.

A shot went off and she panicked and looked down at her person and Scarlett was fully expecting to see blood coming from her body but it didn't. Confused Scarlett looked back up to see the blonde woman holding her hand where her heart was and blood coming out from the wound. The woman's knees buckled and she feel over to the ground, dead. Looking behind her Scarlett watched as Jasper walked forward and blew the smoke from his gun.

"She talked a big game, yet couldn't pull the trigger." Jasper shrugged.

Scarlett turned back around to the man she had just saved and he was stunned to see what had just happened. Not that she didn't blame him, after all Jasper had just shot his wife dead right in front of him but no Scarlett had questions.

"Sir? Care to explain why the hell your wife tried to set you on fire in your house?" Scarlett questioned.

The man looked down at Scarlett and began to gather his thoughts.

"She wanted to leave me, she found and outlaw and they fell in love. I begged her to stay and she said she would rather burn me alive than stay with me." The man answered as Scarlett's eyes grew wide in shock.

"She was a nut! Sir you have horrible taste in women...sorry that probably wasn't the kindest way to put it." Scarlett said as she looked around.

"But true." Jasper commented as he put his gun away. "What do we do about the others and uh the house?"

"The house can burn, it can always be rebuilt. The other outlaws she brought in though I have no idea." The man commented.

"First how about we learn the name of the damsel in distress?" Jasper chuckled looking at the man.

"Sam, just Sam...who are ya'll?" he replied as he kept his gaze on Scarlett.

"I'm Scarlett, that is Jasper and Charles and Henry and the ones out running the outlaws." Scarlett said as they made their way to the barn. "Any guns in the barn Sam?"

"Four I think, why do you have a plan?" he asked as Scarlett followed Sam to where the guns were.

"Something like that." Scarlett grinned as she took one shot gun from Sam's hand and climbed up to the hayloft.

"Are you two married?" Sam questioned Jasper.

"Not yet, I'll find a way though." Jasper said taking a gun.

"I don't marry men who try to blackmail me." Scarlett called out from the loft.

"She had great hearing." Sam commented.

"Believe me, I know." Jasper sighed and climbed up to the hay loft as well.

Taking the remaining two gun, Sam climbed up into the hayloft as well and looked out the window. There before the window, Scarlett and Jasper lay with gun aimed ahead. Sam understood what Scarlett had planned now. There were only five outlaws so they should be able to take them down and keep themselves hidden.

"Here they come." Scarlett said as she adjusted her position.

She was right, two men he didn't know were leading the lawless men right their way. Sam stood to the side and watched as they grew closer and closer. He knew that both Jasper and Scarlett were waiting for their shot and was surprised when Scarlett took the first shot and it didn't miss, Roger, the man that he now dead wife had fallen in love with fell right off his horse no doubt dead. Scarlett moved back and re loaded as Jasper took his first shot, he didn't miss either. Mark, Roger's brother fell from his horse dead too. The process repeated as the outlaws looked around for who the shooters were but they never found them before there was a bullet that took their life from them.

"That's the last one." Jasper said moving away from the window and making his exit from the hayloft.

Standing Scarlett dusted herself off and looked to Sam who just stared at her in awe.

"Sam, you don't seem to have any need to stay here now. Think you could help me out with a little information?" Scarlett said as she walked up to him.

"I'll do what I can, I mean I do owe you my life after all." Sam gulped as he watched her.

"Sam, any information on James?" Charles voice called out from the bottom of the barn.

Looking over the edge, Scarlett looked down to see Henry, Charles and Jasper looking up at her and Sam. Nodding, Sam made his way down from the loft to Charles who he apparently seemed to know.

"Yeah, as much as I know you didn't want to hear this...James is alive but he made his way far from here. Hasn't even been heard from for close to a year. No one knows where he is." Sam spoke freely to Charles who sighed and looked up at Scarlett.

"Does he have family?" Scarlett questioned.

"Nah, unless he don't know about them. He never married he just went from whore to whore." Sam said looking up to Scarlett. "Last place anyone ever saw him was Austin, Texas."

"Hell of a long ride Scar." Henry said as he scratched the back of his head.

"One that this worth it though. How about it Sam? Will you come to Texas and help me find my father's killer?" Scarlett questioned as she made her way down from the hay loft.

"Scarlett? You can't just say stuff like that!" Jasper scoffed as he looked to Sam. "What good would sheep farmer do? I mean look at him."

"I think he would blend in well, he already got us information once, I don't see why he can't do it again?" Scarlett said walking up to Sam and looking up so her eyes met his. "What do you say Sam? I saved your life, will you help me out?"

Sam didn't say a word but nodded his head, quickly agreeing to what Scarlett had offered him. Offering her hand to Sam, Scarlett smiled as he took her hand and shook it. Instead of there being just the four of them, now they had a fifth, one that she knew could help her to blend in when they got to Texas.
