Carson City
The road to Carson City was long...tremulous...hot and so many other things Scarlett tried to ignore. Yet she had still made it there, somehow she was still alive and only taken a few break while on her way there. Getting off her horse she tipped her hat down to hide her face before taking a jacket out of her bag and putting it on. It wasn't cold but she didn't really want to be noticed at first. Though she was dressed to be noticed. Walking around the town, Scarlett got to the general store and walked inside. She could hear the shop keeper talking to a woman who was ordering some kind of fabric and two men in the back ground talking about a new train coming into town.
"We'll be lucky if Ray and his gang don't get to the train before it can deliver the goods that this place needs." One man comments.
"That would take a miracle, you know how those fools are, one day they are going to end up on the wrong side of a gun and then in the ground." The second chuckled as he looked down at the floor.
"One can always hope and pray I suppose." The first said with a sigh.
Ray's gang...maybe this James was part of the gang and he wouldn't be that hard to find after all? Could her luck really be that good? Looking at something in the store a loud scream was heard from the main road of the town. Everyone rushed outside to see the scene unfold before them. There in the center of the road was a man holding a barely dressed woman with a gun to her head.
"This whore owes me five dollars!" the drunken man calls out to the crowd.
Rolling her eyes Scarlett knew this wasn't anything worth time. Five dollars for services she didn't even want to think about but still that was no reason to have a gun held to the woman's head. Scarlett didn't have a gun but she wondered if maybe she could outsmart the man? Then again that would also bring attention to herself which she wasn't sure he wanted yet.
"Let her go...I'll give you the money." A male voice calls out from the crowd.
The crowd parted like the red sea. There in the middle stood a man with a long black trench coat on, no hat and a very familiar shade of blonde hair. Scarlett narrowed her eyes as she watched to see what would happen next. The drunk laughed as he looked the mans way.
"Who are you? Her husband? Makin the wife earn money huh?" the drunk laugh as he held the gun closer.
As the man was distracted, Scarlett moved to the crowd behind the drunk. Trying to get a good look at the man wondering if it was who she thought it was. The man finally looked up from the ground and she was right about who she thought it was, Jasper, why he was here she didn't know but now she was determined to find out. Hearing the drunk hiccup she saw it as her chance. Rushing forward she grabbed the drunks gun from his hand and aimed it at his own head.
"Let the girl go unless you want your brains spattered all over the road." Scarlett warned the man.
Nodding the man pushed the woman right into Jaspers arms. Jasper handed her to another barely dressed woman who took her into the brothel. The drunk held his hands up in the air unsure what to do now since Scarlett didn't give any other instructions.
"What now? I let her go, you still gonna shoot me?" the drunk laughed and then feel forward passed out on the dirt floor.
Blinking Scarlett looked down at the man and then around as the crowd dispersed. That wasn't exactly how she thought things would play out but this was the less bloody version. Turning her head back to Jasper who was walking her way she looked down at the gun in her hand.
"I don't think he needs it, why don't you hold onto it for him?" Jasper questions as he looks up at her.
"Jasper? What in the hell are you doing here?" Scarlett questioned a little mad that he followed her?
"Jasper? Oh you mean my brother, I'm not Jasper, I am Charles. Same family different name." Charles said as he offered his hand to her to shake.
"Jasper never said he had a brother."
"Oh well, I am the black sheep of the family. I moved out here to be a farmer unlike my brother who is more business savvy in the railroads." Charles shrugged with his hand still held out to her.
"I'm Scarlett Worthington, I rejected your brother...well actually I just said I would never marry him." Scarlett said as she shook his rough, hard worked hand.
"Brave, I like you even more." Charles smiled as he shook her satin hand.
"Thanks, I'm actually here looking for someone. Do you know a James Bathrolomew?" Scarlett asked Charles who seemed to think for a moment.
"He's an outlaw I know that, he was in the jail for a few days last year but haven't heard about him since, sorry. Is he a relative?" Charles said as he all the sudden caught an image of a coach about to him them but he reacted and pulled her into his arms.
Scarlett held onto Charles tightly just from pure fear. The carriage passed them and went right to the brothel. Looking up at Charles she now noticed the difference between him and Jasper. Jasper had blue eyes whereas Charles had green, a very enchanting green colored eyes.
"Forgive me but I didn't want either of us to get run over, the carriage drivers are not very cautious here." Charles said as he smiled down at her. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, um thank you for saving me." Scarlett said distancing herself from Charles. "I'm sorry to hear about your parents too, Jasper told me they had passed."
"Yes, well when I last saw them they were well so I keep them like that in my memory. Why don't we get you some food so we can get your whole story?" Charles asked as he offered Scarlett his arm.
Looking at his arm Scarlett was not sure she could completely trust him just yet but he did save her life once already so she nodded and took his arm. Walking inside to the saloon Charles seemed to know what he was doing as he placed a food order and then sat them down at an open table.
"So this guy you are looking for, why are you after him?" Charles asked as he looked at Scarlett.
"Uh...I don't think you would like my answer." Scarlett said looking away from him embarrassed.
"Come, it can't be that bad."
"I plan to avenge my father's murder but putting him in the ground." Scarlett blurted out in a low whisper.
"You have corrected me, that is bad. Not that he doesn't deserve it for killing your father but are you sure 100% that you have the right man? It would be horrible to have the wrong man's blood on your hands." Charles said making a clear point there too.
Scarlett took out the letter and handed it to Charles, she didn't know why she trusted him so much but for some reason she just knew she could. Charles read the letter and then looked to Scarlett.
"Brown hatted man?" he questioned.
"He was the one that shot my father during the bank robbery. The white hatted man told us all the other men's names before he was hung." Scarlett said as she took back the letter.
"I see, well we can hunt him down and then make sure he matches the man you remember." Charles said as their food and drink arrived and was sat before them on the table.
"We? What are you talking about we?" Scarlett asked curiously.
"Well, if I let you go looking for this guy alone more than likely you'll get killed. I'd hate to see such a pretty girl like you get hurt so I'll help you, plus it'll get my mind off the farm for a while, my helpers can handle it." He said as he dug into his food.
Scarlett was going to argue but this man just kept making good point after good point. Taking a deep breath she began to eat the food before her, and no it wasn't anything like her mother cooked it would at least keep her alive. Charles finished his food fast and looked to Scarlett who had finished about half and looked as though she couldn't take another bite.
"Where will you stay? Have you money for a room?" Charles said wiping his face on a cloth napkin.
Money...how in the world could Scarlett forget to bring money. Closing her eyes, she mentally scolded herself for forgetting such a needed item.
"Judging by that look I am going to think that you have no money at all...well I guess you'll have to stay with me then." Charles said as he stood and went to the bar.
What? Stay with him?! A man she had just met and knew very little about. Standing to argue she looked to the door as two more familiar faces came inside the saloon. There stood not only Jasper but Henry too. What were they doing here?! Scarlett went right up to the men about to give them a piece of her mind until Jasper covered her mouth with his hand.
"You can yell at us somewhere a bit more private." Jasper commented looking at the people inside the saloon.
"My room is right upstairs, why not try to explain brother." Charles said as he walked up behind Scarlett.
"Of all the towns, you just had to be in this one didn't you Charles?" Jasper questioned as Scarlett looked up at the two.
They looked exactly alike! They must be twins! Scarlett cleared her throat to get some attention back and Charles looked down and removed Jasper's hand from Scarlett's mouth. Taking Scarlett's hand gently he led the group up to his room. Closing the door Scarlett turned around and stared Jasper and Henry down.
"You two better have a good reason for being here..." Scarlett said with a heated tone.
"He wants to hide the murder you intend to do and then blackmail you into marrying him!" Henry calls out to Scarlett and even Charles looked shocked at the sudden accusation.
