Chapter 1. 104th Trainees
Countless teenagers were lined up in four, equal, straight rows; right fist clenched over their hearts and left behind their backs lightly with determination.
Dusty swirls drifted above the ground as a cool breeze flowed through the air; emitting from the yellow planes behind them.
To where the teens where facing; the orange orb known as the sun was half visible while it sunk behind shallow mountains in the distance, turning the sky a pearly pink; orange blended into the mix.
Commander Shadis - a bald male dressed like the young ones that stood in front of him, who trembled slightly while the tanned yelled at them, demanding their name and district.
He wore a white button up shirt that was covered with a brown jacket that uniquely ended at his lower rib cage; the Stationary Guard crest was sewed on his upper arms and back - a steel shield where two, crimson roses lay in the top right corner and the bottom left, one white leaf for each while a white, thorny stem connected the two flowers.
He wore white pants that had a strange series of leather belts hooked up and down the unstained fabric; complicating the minds of those who tried to figure them out; a brown material warped around his hips like a short skirt.
The difference between the two uniforms was not much; but the fact that Shadis wore the Stationary Guard crest while the cadets in front of him wore the Trainee one, where two iron swords clashed over each other; forming an "x" over a shield.
"Name and district!" The general roared over and over; a squeaky comment replied to him while he asked them their purpose of wanting to join the Cadet Corps.
On the fourth row; he finally came to the last one - a small girl, about 5'2 with chocolate brown hair which hung over her shoulder in a lose braid, before ending at her waist. Her sun-like golden irises were covered with her brown bangs while her salute had no flaws; a determined look plastered on her snowy, mature features.
"And what do people call you, short stack?!" Keith Shadis bellowed, the girls face twisting into a slight wince as the excruciating noise found her ears - a sweet melody of words soon escaping from her opened mouth.
"Akira Nightfall, of the Shiganshina district, sir!" She replied, gasps echoed through the crowd of people; some saying she looked too innocent to have seen the the horrors of what happened to the outer city.
"Where's your height solider?!" Shadis roared, enraging the small girl in front of him. For many a time people had called her short and small, let's just say they ended up with a broken nose and large bruises the size of a palm dotted all over their body.
"I'm naturally short, sir!" She roared back, anger evident in her musical voice; as much as she wanted to beat the living hell out of the man in front of her, he was her superior - at least for now, that is.
"What's your purpose?!" He demanded, stray bits of spit sprouting from his mouth, none luckily landing on her.
As soon as the words left his mouth her face seemed to darken, while her bangs covered her eyes.
"The fear I felt while I saw the humanoid creatures we call Titans, is something I wish not the children of Wall Rose nor Sina to feel. The pain I felt while I watched everyone I loved and knew die in front of my eyes is something I never want to feel again; I may not be able to help myself, but at least I'll know that the innocent is living without trauma. You see, General, everything's fascinating in the eyes of a child, they see the world with out the filter of painful experiences, I want them to keep seeing this dark, hell hole like its a fairytale wonderland. They're the small rays of light that shine through the stone cracks that keep us incased in a small bird cage; others need to live, General. To not feel pain. That why I will protect my city, I will do everything in my power, to help humanity take anther step forwards" She replied her voice barley a whisper.
The general nodded and glared, taken back by her little outburst though he did not show it; marching back up to the front of the group and gave a loud lecture to the trainees, before dismissing them for dinner in the mess hall.
Akira entered the large wooden cabin, made of maple planks. Oak seats and chairs lined up against the walls, so from the door way they where at a landscape view.
Many trainees like her had already seated themselves and where biting at stale loafs of bread, jugs of water infront of them. She scanned the area for a spare seat when her eyes landed on a table that was currently obtained by a boy, messy brown hair sat on his head and his sea green irises where plastered on a bowl of soup.
The girl cursed under her breathe and made her way to the boy, seeing as all the other tables where filled with groups that chatted loudly.
She stood in front of the boy on the other side of the table, he wore a stained, sandy coloured shirt and worn out brown pants while black flats covered his feet. He must have changed before he came to dinner, the golden eyed girl thought.
Akira cleared her throat and asked if she could sit with him, he politely offered the seat in front of him while the brown headed girl took the seat be pointed at.
"My names Eren! Eren Jaeger!" He introduced, sticking out his hand while looking at her with hopeful eyes.
"Nightfall, Akira Nightfall" she replied, yet did not shake his hand. Eren withdrawed his hand in attempt to not embarrass himself, the two ate in silence until a horde of boys - ones Akira could name; Reiner, Marco, Bertolt and a few others started bombarding Eren with questions.
It started with something like; 'Hey, Eren, aren't you from the Shiganshina district?'
'Yeah, I am'
And so on... Honestly, it was starting to bug the brown haired girl. He kept on boasting and saying things that weren't true, saying that Titans weren't scary and a whole more bunch of stupid lies.
She sat there in silence until one comment caught her attention.
"What about the Armoured One?" A girl asked, she had raven hair that was devided equally into two pig tails, an innocent smile plastered on her face.
"Is that what they call it? In the panic, it just looked like another Tita-"
"Bunch of bull" Akira interrupted, attracting the attention of those around their table. She glared dangerously at Eren from behind her soft bangs; if he thinks it's fine to go feed lies to people that don't even know the horrifics of a crimson battlefield, well he's wrong, she thought. "I saw it myself. You looked at it with fear painted across every one of your features, Jaeger" She snapped, lying is something the small girl didn't appreciate in this hell hole of a world; if he's gonna use words to his advantage, he doesn't deserve the luxury of a first name she said mentally "You cried; didn't you, Eren, when you saw your mother stuck under the debris." She had seen everything; while running to the inner wall, the cold eyed girl had caught a glimpse of Eren, trying to pull a wooden slab off of his now, deceased, mother.
"Now, I'm not denying I did too, what they have done to humanity; I won't forget. I made a vow, Eren. Etched it on my very soul. Would you like to know what I vowed?" Her voice was barely a whisper, but everyone held on to them like it was a life or death situation. She placed her mug on the table and turned to face the boy fully, hardening her glare - and let's say if looks could kill, he'd have been dead hours ago. " I vowed to kill them; just like you. But you have to know, Eren; you won't be alive when the last one of them is killed; when humanity is free again. I know we will rid this world of its curse, but not in this life time. So don't get cocky just because you think everything's gonna be peachy and you'll kill them all one fell swoop. Because this world is cruel. I tell you and tell you again; cruel, is the world we live in." She finished, while her fellow cadets stared at her with wide eyes.
Taking this as her cue to leave; she stood up and strolled out of the mess hall, hesitating at the doorway but still continued forth.
Akira soon found herself in the middle of the training grounds; where they swore their loyalty to the Cadet Corps.
A wide forest stood in front of her, a beautiful mass of dark green and chocolate brown; chirping of cockroaches and rustling of small mammals echoed through the dense greenery.
A crescent moon hovered high above; small stars twinkling brightly while dark clouds threatened to cover the stunning sight.
Stray trees could be spotted along the training grounds; small oaks and maples stood proudly in the dim light while little daisies and dandelions huddled close to them.
The small girl sighed, as the sight in front of her gave her the urge to sit and sleep against one of the pine trees, yet she did not.
Making a detour, she spun on the heel of her knee length, brown boots. Heading towards the girls cabins. As the days earlier events had made her slightly drowsy and her head pounded merciless inside her white, bone skull.
The short walk was quiet, as everyone would be enjoying their rotten dinner in the mess hall. Akira's mind drifted off to when the Colossal Titan - a sixty meter, skinless, humanoid, creature - had appeared; how it felt decades ago when tears ran down her face, ten meter class Titans reaching out to grab her only friends frail body.
Small tears pricked in the corner of her golden eyes as she opened the door to her cabin. Forcing the salty tears down; she retreated towards a bed; one at the very back where she hoped she could find some quiet.
Six bunk beds aligned against the dusty walls; stained, white bed sheets neatly draped over plush mattresses as a single pillow preoccupied the head of each bed.
Choosing the bottom bed of her bunk, she climbed onto the mattress; not bothering to take off her cadet uniform.
The small girl lay her head on the soft pillow; tucking herself inside the thin covers.
A stray tear managed her escape from the corner of her eye, trailing down past her temple and down her cheek as she thought of how unfortunate everyone one here was.
Eren.
Marco.
Even that blond boy named Armin.
Most were training to fight the problem to get away from it! To go join the Military Police and serve the oh so amazing King.
The thought made Akira's body shake, rage intoxicated her body; exotic eyes glaring up at the wooden planks above her bed.
The small girl then threw her stained covers off forcefully, throwing her legs over the bed; she needed to cool down before the burned the whole camp down.
Standing up, she jogged outside; slamming the door behind her.
Tonight, this girl was not going to get to sleep.
