Box

Upon his return to the inn, Gouenji was very disoriented. He was unable to believe if he had actually met Kira or if she was a mirage born out of his desperate longing for her.

He turned around and looked in the mirror. His lips had red on them too. While this could easily be explained away by the feast he had had, the sensation he felt on them could not. He was now sure he had held her in the dark of the night and their lips had met.

When his trance like state subsided he was overcome with frustration. He had a chance to clear things up with Kira and he wasted it away. As soon as he saw her, he couldn't help but be frozen by her presence. All he could think about was how he had an overwhelming desire to kiss her and that is what he did.

He slammed his fist down on the table, making all the objects on it jump a little, including the box. He sat down on the bed with a 'thud' and picked up the box again. He tried to pick its lock once again, for some reason he desperately wanted to open it at that moment. His struggle reached a crescendo and then he stopped at once with a sigh and fell backwards on the bed.

The box remained unopened.

...

Upon her return to Clara's house, Kira was suddenly overcome with a sense of dread. She had just killed a man and she felt like the whole world knew about it. She felt as if at any moment the townspeople would find out she was the culprit and then they would drag her out of her hiding place and kill her in the town's square.

At this point, all she wanted was to hide in Gouenji's embrace and forget that the world beyond his person even existed. She was so scared that she was willing to forgo any anger she may have felt for him, she was willing to return to him and calm her vexed mind.

But now she could not, even if she wanted. She could not go into town, the same town that was probably stunned by the murder in the dead of the night. The murder she had committed. It was too risky for her to go there. If anyone remotely had any doubts about her being a vampire that would be the end of it.

She couldn't understand how Gouenji and Mr Watanabe could live so confidently among humans.

Clara noticed her nervous demeanor and became suspicious. She had heard of the death in the town and she wondered if her guest had something to do with it. But at the same time, she was too nervous to ask. She didn't know if revealing that she knew Kira's secret would result in her trying to take care of loose ends.

...

Gouenji knew Kira must have been anxious after her first kill. He wanted to hold her and calm her down but he didn't know where she even was. He was also concerned for her safety now. The townspeople were vigilant and angry. It was getting risky to stay there. He wanted to leave but he couldn't until he reunited with Kira.

He thought about that night again and tried to remember the details. It was difficult since everything was foggy except for the kiss they shared. After some effort, he was able to remember the direction she dashed in.

With that hint, he immediately set out to find her once again.

At the stroke of midnight, he came across the little house on the hill. He was surprised by the existence of it. He had never thought someone else lived out in the wilderness like he did. This is why he couldn't find her before, he had not looked this far from civilization.

Clara was startled to hear a knock at that hour.

"Perhaps I should go." Kira offered, "It could be someone dangerous."

"Or perhaps it's my son." Clara answered, "He often arrives at this time. " She hobbled her way towards the door.

Clara opened the door and as soon as she saw Gouenji, she immediately let out a scream and then fainted. He didn't even find the time to assure her that he meant no harm.

The next moment Kira rushed out and was surprised to find Gouenji standing at their doorstep.

"Shuuya?! What are you doing here?" She exclaimed.

"May I come in to speak further?" He asked sheepishly.

"No! Go away! You are not welcomed here." Kira spoke firmly as she rushed to Clara.

She realised the fall had broken Clara's foot. She picked her up and carried her in.

Gouenji rushed towards the window and peeked in.

"Come back, Kira. Give me a chance to explain. Won't you trust me even a little?" He urged.

"I cannot even if I wanted to. You see what has happened? Clara has injured herself. I must nurse her back to health. " She responded rather softly this time.

"Kira, please understand. We should leave here. The atmosphere of the town is getting hostile." He spoke with more alarm in his tone.

"You must understand. I cannot leave Clara alone in this state. I am indebted to her. "

She came closer to the window and extended her hand through the diamond-shaped grilling. She reached out and touched his face.

"You must go. Leave this town and go somewhere safe. " She spoke softly.

"How can you suggest such a thing!" He was heartbrokenly shocked, "I'd never leave you behind. "

"Did you forget? Our lives are intertwined. To keep me safe, you have to keep yourself safe. "She smiled sadly, "You are in a riskier position than me. "

He stared at her helplessly with a sad frown. They both moved forward and rested their heads against the metal.

"Can you invite me in so I can hold you for a moment?" He asked softly.

"It wouldn't work. " She answered sadly, "It's not my house."

In the meantime, Clara began to regain her senses.

"Please leave now!" Kira requested.

"Alright, I will. But I won't be leaving the town just yet. I will wait for you. " He said and left before Kira could protest further.
