Chapter 8

Shelby's POV

"Come on the bonfire will start soon. Maybe it'll shed some light on your situation," Amanda said.

"Okay, I brought you a change of clothes they are in my car. I thought that James might do something like this, so I came prepared,"

"Thank you," she said then we walked to my car to grab the change of clothes. "You actually brought the non-flashy car,"

"Yea, only cuz you asked so nicely," I replied sarcastically.

"Well, it would have been a waste if you had brought it. No one is going to see it, and everyone knows that your dad is rich."

"Just because he got me the car does not mean that I am daddy's spoiled princess. I never use his money,"
"I know. You are the hardest worker I have seen in a while Shelby," Amanda said looking at me.

"Thanks, here," I said throwing her clothes at her.

"Thank you,"

We changed out of our dresses into jeans and tee shirts, trading our heels for converse and putting our jewelry in a little bag in my car. "Much better," I said.

"Yea. I don't mind getting dressed up, but this is so much more comfortable," Amanda said.

We walked back to the house and down the trails to the bonfire that was just starting. It was down the hill from the house and surrounded by trees to hide the underage drinking that occurred every time that there was a party thrown here.

"I'm going to go find Eric, will you be okay alone?" Amanda asked.

"Yea, go find your match made in heaven,"
"Okay but give James a chance, think about how long he has held back," Amanda said.

She left and I walked around the party seeing almost the entire school with a red solo cup in their hand. That was when I smelled the best scent in the world, only one person could have that effect. He wrapped his arms around my waist and put his head on my shoulder whispering into my ear, "I'm so glad you made it princess. I was starting to get lonely without you." His voice caught me off guard it was genuine.

"James," was all I could think to say.

"I love it when you say my name,"
"How much have you had to drink?"
"I'm hurt beautifully. You think I need to be drunk to miss you?"

"I must confess I never thought about you missing me. How did you know I would be here?"

"You have yet to miss one of my parties our whole life. It was a fair guess,"
I was about to correct him, but I could not find an example of a time he was wrong.

"I have a gift for you Shelby," James said pulling out a square red box.

"James?" I questioned. He opened it revealing a necklace that looked identical to the wings I had in the forest. "Why did you get me this?"

"Well aside from you being an angel that has blessed this world with your beauty. It will help you to control your wings. When the necklace is on your wings will not appear, but if you take it off the spell will fade and you will have your wings until you put it back on again," James explained. "I had it custom made, since we do not know the extent of your powers this will only control the wings, like how Amanda's bracelet controls hers,"

"It is beautiful," I said. "Thank you,"

"May I?" James asked taking the necklace out of the box and holding it up. I moved my hair to the side and James placed the necklace around my neck, clasping it closed. He moved his hand lightly touching my neck. I let out a quiet moan at the sparks that accompanied his touch. We locked eyes and I had been so busy hating him that I had never taken the time to look into his eyes. They were big, brown, and warm, the adoration that was held within his eyes made me realize how much I had put him through over the years. I looked down at his lips for a second and immediately regretted it. His lips pulled into his all too familiar smirk that made all girls fall to their knees. "If you wanted a kiss all you have to do is ask," James teased.

Instead of asking I grabbed his shirt and went onto my tiptoes pulling his shirt simultaneously, our faces meeting in the middle. Then I kissed him, slowly and with all of the emotions that he made me feel. "If I want to kiss you I do it. I do not need your permission, Alpha," I smirked and walked away knowing he would be at my side within seconds.

"You should know better than to turn your back on an Alpha, studies show that you will regret it,"

"You know how to read? You have managed to surprise me, James,"

"Harsh, princess," James said as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from the fire.

"Dumbass the fire is the other way,"

"Just shut up and trust me," James said. "I have to show you something,"

We walked for a little bit in silence. We had to be completely out of sight and hearing range of the fire. I could not hear the drunken teenagers laughing and singing along to whatever song was playing. "Where are we going?" I asked. "You better not be kidnapping me," James did not reply but I could tell that we were close because he had started to pick up his speed and our fingers were now interlocked and I liked how his touch felt. It was soft but it also sent tingles up my arm and wherever he touched.

"We are here," He said pulling a branch, revealing a beautiful lake. We were at the border of the territory; I could tell by the mountains that were reflected in the lake.

"Why have I never been here before?"

"You have you just don't remember it," James said.

"How would you know?"
"I can not tell you,"

"Can't or won't?"

"I have to follow orders too,"
"Why would your dad not want me to remember this place?" As soon as the question left my mouth. I fell to the ground and screamed.

"Shelby," James said rushing to my side holding my hand. He grabbed his phone with the other hand and dialed someone's number. That was the last thing I saw before I blacked out.

Amanda's Pov:

I found Eric with a drink in his hand and talking with some other guys. I smiled and went up and hugged him. He held me tightly and gave me a kiss on my temple.
"What's up?" I asked everyone.

"The probability of me throwing up," Darren said.

I laughed and playfully hit him on the arm. "Just cuz you can't get some?" I asked.

"I could if I wanted..." Darren said.

"Dude she totally roasted you," Andrew said.

"She did not, I could totally get someone tonight if I wanted to," Darren tried to defend himself.

"Mr. Casanova even with all of the alcohol at this party you couldn't get laid,"

"Ok we can not roast Darren all night, does anyone know if werewolves can be blind? Cuz then Darren has a shot," I said. "Or now that James is out of the picture Sara is probably desperate enough to give you a chance,"

"I can do better than someone who has been obsessed with James forever," Darren defended himself.

"Speaking of where is he? It isn't like him to miss his own party. Even though he would always just watch Shelby dance in the firelight," Andrew said.

I thought about that for a second. "Wait you mean when she would get drunk and dance upon strangers? He hated that but it was always interesting to hear him yell at her about it than to hear her complain about him. They are going to be interesting pack leaders that are for sure," I laughed lightly looking around it, was weird to think about how far they had come in their relationship. They would have a long way to go before they were the same. I suddenly felt a pain in my head, someone here was not just a werewolf. "Hey, are you ok?" Eric asked.

"Someone here is..." I did not know if I should continue. I do not know the extent of everyone's knowledge on the subject. I knew that Darren and Eric were both well informed and Thomas had to know some, but Andrew was not supposed to know anything.

"I understand, could you be more specific? How far away? Anything?" Eric asked looking at Darren. I had never had anyone help me before.

"Two. Brother and Sister. He is older by a year. I can't tell anything else,"

"That is plenty thank you beautiful," Eric said before rushing off into the crowd with Darren.

"What are they doing?" Andrew asked.

"Just pack business," Thomas said looking at me.

"Oh ok," Andrew answered. "Do you want something to drink or medicine?" Andrew asked me.

"No thank you though," I answered.

"Amanda, can I talk to you for a second?" Thomas asked.

"Of course," I answered a little scared, he was the beta now. I walked alongside him; I was almost jogging because of how big his strides were.
"Do you really think it was a good idea to send Darren after them? Especially if a girl is involved," Thomas asked once we were out of earshot of Andrew.

"Darren can be professional when he needs to be, and Eric will be with him. So, I think they will be ok," I said.

"PERVERT!!!" a girl screamed, and Thomas and I ran toward where the voice came from. We found Darren with a red handprint on his cheek and Eric was trying his best not to laugh at the sight. I took one look at the girl and knew that she was one that had powers. I was not 100% sure on what she was but I knew that she was part werewolf not that that would help us much.

"Darren, what did you do?" I asked.

"I didn't do anything," Darren defended himself

"He tried to hit on her," Eric said.

"Figures," I said. "Hi, my name is Amanda. What's yours?" I asked the girl stretching out my hand. I had done this several times with James, but I had never confronted a hybrid by myself, often the people did not know about their history or why they were hybrids.

"My name is Hailee, I am with the Black moon pack," Hailee said. "I was having a good time until he showed up," she added with sass.

"He has that effect on people. Do you mind if we talk a little bit later? Tomorrow maybe?" I asked.

"I guess we can. Like, go get a coffee or something?"

"If that is what you would like, here is my number," I said giving her a piece of paper that had my number on it.

"Ok, my brother and I are staying at your packhouse until we go back to ours,"

"Great we will see you around," I waved goodbye tugging on Darren's arm. "You need to learn to behave yourself," I scolded Darren.

"What she was cute?" Darren said.

"She is also underage," I said.

"Well, she looked old enough,"
"She is 15, blood type B and 5 feet 4 inches approximately 105 pounds," I replied out of instinct.

"You know it is really scary when you do that," Darren said.

"I'm sorry," I looked down. As we kept walking, my phone started to ring, I took it out of my pocket and got confused. "It's James," I said aloud, and everyone stopped moving.

"Why did he call you?" Thomas questioned.

"Amanda pick it up. You are the closest thing to a nurse here, he is probably in trouble," Eric said checking his phone.

"Alpha?" I said answering the phone.

"Amanda you need to get over here. Shelby is in trouble; I took her to the lake and when we got here, she just fainted. What do I do?" James was panicking.

"James you need to calm down. How much has she had to drink? Is her face red?" I asked.

"She has not had anything to drink. No, her face is not red at all," James said trying to calm down.

"James please tell me you did not take her to that lake?"

"I had to. She has every right to know and what is my father going to do punish me, I am his Alpha now," James said.

"It's too soon, James. I do not know how she if she will be able to handle it. We knew that the more time you spent together the faster that the spell would wear off. Taking her to a place where you two spent all of that time together, it's risky James and you knew that," I scolded him over the phone. "I'll be there as soon as I can and be prepared, there will be consequences but not from me,"

"Just hurry," James said.

I turned to everyone; they were all looking at me. "James took Shelby to their lake; she might know everything within a couple of hours. For now, let's just go and do the best we can to stabilize the situation," I looked to Eric who just nodded. I was the first one to start running toward the lake, Thomas followed then Eric, and finally Darren.
