Chapter 6
Chapter 6
It certainly has occurred to me that my goal was completely similar and different to Light's.
Should I start screaming, 'God of the New World!' and then with a cackle of 'Muahahahahahahahaha!'?
Okay, now I am legit tempted to do that.
The warm air blew through my brown strains of hair lingering on my neck. I had bunched my hair into a neat bun today. My eyes tracked through the walking adults on the streets, observing their clothes and accessories.
Samatha Vega bag, wavy long hair, didn't dye it. Serious, middle class, spent around fifteen minutes ironing her hair. Next person.
RFW Tokyo shoes, clean shirt, the suit seems relatively clean, his tie is red. A proper citizen, and a minimalist. Next.
Afternoon Tea case bag, working and likes to travel. Must work a lot overseas, a high ended company then...
Hender Scheme sneakers, follows the trend, likes neat and tidy looks. But woman, sneakers in red do not look good with that yellow sundress. Was she colorblind? No, most likely just her sense of style.
Uniqlo dress shirt, cheap and affordable...
Comme des Garçons skirt, stylish. Probably prefered lolita style...
I lifted off my eyes from the passers, walking towards the tall, well-kept building with the bold words in silver plating.
National Police Agency.
I stopped my footsteps in front of the door, checking once again for any wrinkles on my casual attire.
Pants? Check.
Comfortable sweater? Oui, oui.
Sneakers? Yes.
I am ready for any volunteer task they hand me! I gulp, taking a deep breath. Toilet cleaning, here I come!
"Hello? Can I help you?" A man from the front desk stared at me innocently, his brown eyes shone harmlessly with his kind smile.
"Er, yes, actually, I am Sayu Yagami, here to volunteer! I will do anything you ask me to!" I saluted my right hand to my forehead, almost smacking me in the process. The man's eyes widened in realization from my last name, gasping as he stood up.
"So you're our chief's daughter! I heard so much about you!" The guy reached out his hand as I gripped it, shaking it three times before we both let go. I was momentarily flabbergasted at his volume, a smile grinning onto my lips from his tension breaker. Wow, he's the chirpy kind. How did someone like him even get into the police work? Must have been his passion then.
"Chief always talks about you and your brother, such a proud father despite his cold and serious demeanour at work!" The man snickered at the thought, opening his doe eyes and gesturing for me to come behind the front desk. I practically ran over, eyes wandering over to the files and pencils behind the desk.
"Um, I'm sorry, but you are?" I tilted my head to the side before bouncing up on my toes.
"Oh! Sorry about that, I was so excited that I forgot to introduce myself! My name is Touta Matsuda, one of the members of the NPA!" Matsuda's cheeks tinted pink, coughing from the embarrassment of his late introduction. His gaze turned to the floor as light from the automatic door shone on the tips of his red ears. My jaw dropped dramatically.
"Matsuda? The legendary Matsuda?! Why are you out here?!" I gestured to the front desk, looking around frantically as if some kind of hidden TV program would jump out and scream, 'joke's on you!'
"Le-Legendary?!" Matsuda yipped, his face turned into a whole tomato before bashfully spluttering, "I wouldn't call myself that!"
"He's far from legendary, miss!" Another worker with a pointy nose waved from behind Matsuda chuckled at my comment, missing the sheer amusement I had in my eyes.
"This guy got kicked out from the meeting because he was making an unnecessary comment." The worker snickered, jabbing Matsuda with his elbow. "Name's Kotoro, by the way."
Casual speech, huh? He must be easygoing.
"Hey!" Matsuda glared his eyes at Kotoro. "I was trying to make a point to them!"
"Yeah, and it got you kicked out." Kotoro casually dismissed the man and turned his eyes back to me. "So you're here to volunteer, huh?"
"Yeah," I nodded immediately, looking around before asking, "is there anything I can do?"
"That's actually quite surprising, miss Yagami! I would never have thought a girl would be interested in police work." Matsuda blocked Kotoro out of my vision with his body before Kotoro grumbled and pushed the short man out of the way. Matsuda yelped, stumbling before shooting lasers at his coworker with his eyes.
I giggled, distracting their heated mind argument and nodded.
"Same here! That's why I wanted to know about my dad's work. Who knows, I might work here in a few years!" I said.
"Ah, youth." Kotoro sighed, closing his eyes frowning for a split second before opening with a broad grin. "As long as you're passionate and young, you can do anything you want!"
It was at this moment where I noticed that Kotoro was quite old. Well, not geezer old, yet he had the look of a tired grandfather. His dark hair was shaved at the side of his ears, giving a vibe of a serious yet young adult in contrast to the dark circles under his eyes.
"I believe that too," I nodded before adding, "but Mr. Kotoro, don't forget the saying yourself. It's never too late to learn and enjoy life."
Wrinkles appeared across Kotoro's forehead as his eyes widened at my comment.
"Well, it seems here that miss is much more mature than we thought!" A whistle came out of his mouth as his brows relaxed on his face.
"Thank you for your compliment!" I flashed my teeth and winked at Matsuda. "And don't worry Matsuda, you'll become a legendary figure one day in the future!"
Of course, since you're the one who ended the reign of the so proclaimed God.
"Thank you?" Matsuda gave another embarrassed smile, this time openingly sweating in confusion. "I'll try my best?"
Looks like I've overwhelmed him for a moment. But this definitely means that I'm on his good side. Save yourself, mouth!
"As the saying goes, 'as long as you're passionate and young, you can do anything!'"
Our conversation continued some more while I sneakily inserted some questions about their own life and preferences. After a whole 15 minutes of talking, another man with dark brown hair walked out from one of the hallways, pausing to squint at me.
"Yagami?" He whispered as Matsuda whipped his head around and beamed at the newcomer.
"Oh! Mr. Shinori! This is our chief's daughter, here for volunteer!" He introduced me as I gave a polite nod in greeting. The Shinori man furrowed his eyebrows at my father's title, giving me a tight-lipped smile while clamping down his fingers on his cappuccino latte.
"So this is his infamous daughter? The one who pales in comparison to her genius brother?"
This time it was my turn to frown a bit, clearly not understanding his grudge with me. The other two beside me furrowed their eyebrows at his comment, Matsuda genuinely turning pale.
"You-"
"Mr. Shinori, that is quite rude for you to say. Is there a reason why you said that? If so, I will apologize for her." Kotoro shot Matsuda with a look of warning after cutting him off harshly. His eyes flashed back to Shinori, clenching his jaw tightly before releasing them. Matsuda didn't back away either, glaring at the man before grumbling out a strand of similar words.
"I'm just stating the truth, aren't I?" Shinori sneered slightly at my quiet silhouette, cocking his face to the side as the inside of his suit flashed off a brand in the design. "I've heard so many things from the chief about his son, yet none for his daughter. Tell me, was I wrong? If so, I apologize for my bluntness."
"You aren't wrong, Mr. Shinori." I opened my mouth and I tilted my head in his direction. I felt the surprised looks from the other two as I continued, not leaving my eyes off of the man.
"My brother is quite an overachiever, making both his father and my family proud. In fact, I am exceptionally proud that he was born into our family. However, I think that Mr. Shinori is understanding enough to realize that everyone specializes in something in a different way. Not many of us are lucky enough to uptake a title that we are never destined for?" I curled up my lip at the man before lowering my head for an apology.
"I realized that I must have been quite rude to you despite meeting you for the first time. I apologize for my imprudence. I am naturally blunt so please excuse my behaviour."
Shinori blinked twice before realizing my hidden meaning, physically gritting his teeth and snarling openly at my bent posture. The hatred radiating from the man was apparent at my words, knowing that I had successfully hit his weak spot, I smirked under my breath.
"What an insolent girl." He squinted at me once again before walking out with a huff. I raised up my head, watching his movements before standing up completely from my bow.
"You played his words right back at him!" Matsuda patted my shoulder with a proud exhale of air. Before he could say anything else, Kotoro interrupted me with a curious tone.
"How did you know that he tried out for the position of Chief before?" Kotoro raised his eyebrows before I shrugged casually.
"I didn't. I just guessed from his change of expression at my father's title. Not to mention the fact that his first reaction to me was my father's last name. He probably held my father in a high position in his mind." I paused before elaborating on my process. "In addition, his suit was from Givenchy, an extremely expensive brand. The only people that could afford was the upper-middle class. Either he was trying to impress someone, or show other people how much power he had."
"But if he had authority, why would he try to belittle the chief's daughter? If not, he was a bitter rival of my father who had either lost a case or lost a position to him. Either way, the title of the victor would be technically bestowed in his current condition of mind." I finished, sliding them a lopsided grin.
"Looks like we have quite an observer here." Kotoro chuckled with a look of amazement. "If that's not talent, I don't know what is. Have you considered applying for our interrogation team? You would prosper there immensely."
"You flatter me too much, Mr. Kotoro! In terms of the interrogation team, I'm actually looking forward to learning more about it!" I grinned up from his compliment before nodding my head up and down. "I'm still contemplating on my life choices, so hit me with all you've got!"
"By the way, so what am I going to do today?"
I snickered when both men did a double-take on the clock and hustled me off into the hallways. Apparently, I wasn't doing toilet cleaning.
It was around 5 pm when Soichiro had finished his meeting, stacking up piles of papers before blinking blankly at the desk, pondering over god-knows-what. I leaned on the doorway, watching my dad pack up as his coworkers one by one left the room, each time nodding politely in greeting.
"Dad," I called out, breaking his trance. He stared at me with stunned silence, looking back and forth between the door and me. "Tough day?"
He laughed sheepishly for a moment, brushing his fallen bangs over his forehead with a heavy sigh.
"Yes, the conference assigned me to a new project." His shoes lumbered on the wooden floor, stepping onto the carpet that divided the room and the hallway. "I trust your day was better than mine?"
"It was." I nodded, brushing my fingers over his rough suitcase, before taking it out of his hand. "I was organizing records of past cases. Quite surprised by how they would allow a little girl to arrange the files. Though, Matsuda did help me while survillencing me? I believe the police placed too much trust on me, even if I was their chief's daughter."
"Well, you wouldn't leak any cases outside, would you?" Dad shook his head and gruffed, trying to take his case out of my hand before I whipped the heavy bag into my other hand, one that was further away from his reach. Soichiro narrowed his eyes at me as I beamed at his reaction.
"Of course not! And stop it, dad." I pulled the case further away from him after his second attempt to reach out for the case before grumbling incoherent strands of frustration. "I'll carry this for you. Sheesh, can't a daughter relieve her father's burden?"
"No, now give me the bag, Sayu!" He hissed immaturely at me before shooting his thick hand, trying to grapple the bag again, ending in utter failure. I pranced way ahead of him, grinning as we stepped out of his workplace and onto the streets. He flattered his steps as he watched me shake my head before finally giving up his ownership of his case.
"See? That wasn't so hard was it?" I waited for him to catch up before matching up his pace. "Now let your daughter pamper her hard-working police dad before she turns old and gets married."
"You're too old to be considering marriage." Soichiro kept his eyes forwards, murmuring the word like some kind of curse.
"Awww, is dad feeling sad? Don't worry, even if I get another last name, I'll still forever be a Yagami!" I slipped my free hand into Soichiro's, skipping happily as we walked through the crowds, towards the underground train station. Out of the corner of my eyes, Soichiro smiled fondly, blinking back invisible tears before grunting out bashfully and picking up his pace.
"I'm not ready to let you go yet." I heard him whisper as we stepped onto the train, father and daughter hand in hand.

More will be revealed as the story progresses so stay tuned for more!
By the way, I'm thinking of doing a POV from Light after this whole story is completed.
Why after the story is completed? Because the feels.
:D
By the end of the story, you might hate on me for that smiley face.
Anyhow,
Reviews are desperately needed!
