Chapter 55
Chapter 55
Light flew back to Japan three days later, joining the Intelligence and Information Bureau in the NPA. We spent an entire 10 days indulging ourselves in pleasure before parting hesitantly with one other. It was like we could never get bored with each other.
It was amazing.
I went back to school and had to make up for the time I missed in the base. Time had passed like water as the days passed by, Light calling each week to check up on me. I huffed at him before playing the cute card and acting like he should wait so that I could join the NPA. He refused knowing that I was joking with him.
Nothing was off except the results of the drug that I had asked the experiment group to design. It came out marvellously, the additives were slightly lethal before we tested it out on some of the prisoners that we had captured from a raid on another base. The test worked out perfectly as the subject had visions of their younger days rolling in money as he giggled like a drunk on the chair.
"This is mind breaking," I echoed before staring at the man before me, bobbing his head as the words 'money' rang out of his mouth like a broken recorder.
"This was the guy who killed most of our men and was caught raping a girl in the military division?" I tilted my head towards Chia as she nodded in response. I studied his movements for a moment before deciding what to do with him.
"Did he kill her?" I asked again before Chia shook her head.
"She killed herself."
Ouch.
I fell silent before closing my eyes to grieve a moment for my worker.
"You have my thanks for creating such a marvellous drug," Bowing my head slightly at the small girl on the other side of the room, my mind flashed to the time when Hugo sucked the blood out of me like a vampire.
The disgust.
I shuddered.
"It's all thanks to your ideas, Alyona," one of the members of the experiment unit grinned proudly before I walked towards the man, raising my hand as Chia placed the sculpting knife onto my palm.
Yanking the man's hair towards me, I steadied my grip and pierced the knife into his left eye, blood leaking in between my fingers as the subject under me groaned in pleasure. I drew the knife around the ball, digging it deeper as I felt the knife cut a few of the tubes before I raised my hand that was in his hair and popped the eyeball out.
"What do you see?" I grinned widely and shook off the blood that was on my hands before marvelling at the item that was still dripping with crimson liquid.
"Money," the subject giggled as blood dripped out from his empty sockets, squealing before tapping both of his feet on the ground like a child. "I'm rich! Rich!"
I turned my face towards the other two in the room, the small worker who had a pale face stared at the eyeball in my hand as Chia who stood away from me made a disgusted face while I waved the toy in my hand like a prize. My eyes turned back to the eyeball, studying the tubes that were still slightly connected to the end of the round object. The whites of the eyes were completely red as if they were crying blood, but the pupils had died from light, making the ball lose its shine.
I squeezed the ball, widening my own eyes from the hardened exterior in contrast to the metaphor of eggs that my eye doctor used to say in order to describe what the eyeball was.
I turned back to the test subject, grabbing a fistful of his hair before showing him his own eye.
"You see this?" I beckoned with my sweetest voice as the man nodded like a kid. "This is gold chocolate! You bought it with 24k gold, and it is the most delicious thing in the world!"
The man's remaining eye widened like a puppy, rolling his tongue out and licking the blood dripping down from my hands. His own blood leaked down his left cheeks as if streaming with tears.
"Give me! Give me!"
I shook my head like I was teaching a 4-year-old.
"Look, it's melting!" I waved my red hand in front of him, the blood splattering everywhere. The man lurched for the ball, tongue moving up and down my fingers before biting down on his eyeball while I plopped it into his mouth.
"Is it delicious?" I whispered with curiosity. The guy bobbed his head before swirling the taste in his mouth and gulping down like a starved child. The short girl behind me gagged, Chia's body shifting towards the girl before patting her on the back.
"Show me!" Extending my hands, the man opened his mouth to show his red and sticky teeth. I stood upright, bending my spine and turned away from the subject with a giddy skip. Bubbling with glee, I gave a candy-eyed smile before my voice dropped so low that it made Chia flinch.
"Kill him," I demanded before exiting the room.
"Alyona, pardon me for asking," Chia spoke out before I turned my head towards her direction. "But have you done anything that you preferred to have not done?"
I mused a bit before my mind flooded to the few deaths that I have caused with my own hands. Shinori's family and Isame.
But I couldn't change it anymore.
"Everyone has those moments, Chia," I murmured before sipping my tea. "But in all those times we have made a mistake, we learn from them."
Like how I was against torture at the beginning. But after the times that L and Hugo...what they had done to me, I woke up. I learned. I accepted.
"I will not show mercy to anyone who goes against me," I flickered my eyes towards Chia before thinking of Tsubame in Japan.
"Anyone who harms what is mine," I halted. "Be it a person or thing, I will make them regret even living on the face of the earth."
Shrieks echoed from the prisoner as my knife dug at her arm, tearing her muscles bit by bit and slice by slice.
"Ooh! This is interesting!" I stood up from my crouching position as the girl howled in pain that was continuously dripping from her body. Her legs were quivering as sweat-drenched both her bloodied clothes and hair. The tips of her blonde hair were quivering, dry and matted before I plunged the knife deeper into her arm, twisting it with a wide grin.
"Look Chia!" I gestured to the blood veins on the arm, grabbing it and yanking them like a child. Chia behind me chuckled at my innocence while the woman behind me howled with spitting agony.
"You!" She spit onto my face before thwarting her feet at me, only failing in attempts because her own actions caused the chair to tilt. Her head hammered onto the floor as she squawked at the mistake.
"You are all monsters!" She shrieked despite her bleeding back head. "Monsters!"
"Chia," I whimpered before turning to the prisoner and pointing accusingly at her. "She called us monsters!"
It was a thing I had when torturing people. For some reason all my emotions became like a child's as I physically broke my victims, torturing them. It was like I was drunk on the adrenaline in my blood. Chia had suggested the possibility of me being stripped of my childhood, and thus when I threw myself into another mental state, my inner kid was revealed.
The moment I exited the state though, I returned to the mid-twenty-year-old me.
"What should we do then, Alyona?" Chia tilted her head like a proud mom, beaming at my dazzling grin. "Should we kill her?"
"No!" I chirped before clapping my hands together, the red liquid flicking off my fingers from the sudden impact. "I will play with her harder! We need to train her!"
I turned back to the woman before setting the chair upright, grunting a few times while stomping my foot and telling the blonde to lose some weight. The horrified expression on the blonde was so amusing that it made me giggle.
Limb by limb, I tore, studying the ways that blood splurt out from her bones and the number of times the woman passed out before I threw ice water on her face and gurgled at her reactions, stabbing her face and drawing a picture of a flower on her cheek.
"That is a very pretty picture, Alyona," Chia nodded as she rated my drawing, encouraging me to draw more.
And I did until the prisoner's body was crushed to the point where it was unrecognizable. I cleared my throat before flicking off the remaining blood on my hands.
"Chia, make sure you harvest her organs and sell them on the black market," I rolled my shoulders while my voice dropped to my normal tone. "You should be able to get a price of 500,000$."
"Yes, boss," Chia's smile widened before walking towards a box sitting on a white table in the corner of the room. Taking out her plastic gloves with a yank onto her fingers, she started to shuffle the bones into a pile, liver, and guts.
"Also, what group was it that attacked our base while I was out?" I placed down my knife before using a tissue to wipe in between my fingers, the liquid smearing the tissue dark crimson.
"The QYT group, Alyona." Chia turned her head and lowered at me. "They are famous for human sex trafficking."
"Who cares what they do," snatching a bottle of water and wiping my forehead with my sleeve, I drank the liquid to quench my thirst. Not tearing my eyes from the bottle, I chuckled darkly and repeated the name of the group.
"If they attack us, then return the favour threefold."
Victories came to us like second nature after my order for them to train in the battle royale with paintballs instead of real guns. Many of my members were cheering about how my leadership skills had brought them to victory, and I replied that it was all thanks to their hard work. I smiled confidently before ordering the mass production of the drug.
Days passed before the numbers of buyers started increasing steadily, all of them coming back for more in order to live in that moment of ecstasy. I made sure to order my members to sell them low for first-time customers, then lifting the price the more they bought it.
An excellent way of income.
I licked my lips before my eyes shimmered in the mirror.
Putting mascara on my eyelashes, I popped my scarlet lips and heard a buzz in my black purse.
"Alyona, I have news to tell you," I heard Henrik's voice through the phone as Felix greeted me in the background. "A man named Mello has joined a mafia group that he created himself, and is holding the NPA director captive."
My eyebrows knitted together at the information.
What? Mello?
That soon?
I searched through my memories but came up with nothing.
"That's weird," I replied before asking Chia who was beside me on the date. "He's a year early before appearing."
"It must be the change of your actions which framed L." Henrik's voice rang out gravely as he continued. "They must be desperate to prove L's innocence."
My face instantly hardened before turning towards the clock and looking at the time.
Dammit, it was 4 am in Japan. I couldn't inform Light-
No, I should.
"Right, then what should I do?" I questioned before running my hands through my scarlet hair, sighing in exasperation...
"We lay low and let your brother do his work," Henrik chuckled lowly before clearing his throat. "We'll work on the orphanage case and get rid of it."
"Right, do that," I nodded before hanging up and crossing my legs before phoning Light.
The phone rang a couple of times before Light's voice growled out darkly.
"Light, apparently there are two successors other than you after L." I went directly to the point as Light's end shuffled with noise.
"Elaborate."
"My mafia group found out about a guy named Mello and he took the NPA director. Most likely to get information out of him. The Death Note will be revealed soon," I paused before speaking out.
"Because I was the last one that L interrogated before his death, and Soichiro's daughter that is not part of the task force..."
"They're going to kidnap you, to threaten for the Death Note." Light concluded instantly as I gave out a small 'hum.'
"Also, the other successor is named Near and is controlling the FBI. You better watch out."
A second passed before Light laughed mockingly at the end of the line.
"Go along with them. I'll send dad to save you. This was what you were aiming for, weren't you, Sayu?"
I raised my brow, knowing that he was indicating something crueller under his words. He was telling me to pick up the Death Note after all their deaths, and that the reason I was so cold to dad was to make him a shield if I were ever to be kidnapped and threatened for the Death Note.
Light was telling me to get rid of Mello.
Dad would have already gotten the Shinigami eyes by then, according to my memory of the anime.
Although I didn't remember if Mello came out of the explosion alive or dead, as long as Dad could tell me the name of Mello, it would be easy. I'll kill Soichiro once I get the name.
"Are you sure? Dad will die."
I didn't disagree with his words, basically confirming them.
"I don't need him anymore," Light said nonchalantly as if we were discussing the weather. "Anyone who opposes Kira will die."
"Alright then," I gave him a shrug. "I'll put on a good show."
"I believe you will, Sayu."
"I just realized how ironic it is that we basically killed a parent ourselves," I tapped the side of my leg with my fingers, drumming it to the newest song by Taylor Swift. "You know that I killed mom, don't you?"
"Yes, and it was done spectacularly."
I smiled a bit before bidding him good luck on his side and hanging the phone. I slipped down into the cushion, sighing a bit before picking up my phone again. I'd also need to alert Henrik of this newfound activity that Light is going to put me through.
"Hello?"
"Aoiko," I greeted warmly before popping my lips with amusement. "You have a mission."
I continued my daily life like a normal girl, going to school and finally living in a dorm for once. Having the president under our grasp was extremely easy.
I chuckled before entering the single dorm that I shared with no one.
Even if I had a dorm, I wasn't the generous one to share with my classmates.
My grades hadn't dropped even though I took days off of class from my mini-vacation with Light. Due to the fact that I didn't even need to care about grades anymore, especially when I asked Henrik to tell the President to add percentages to my grades, I could graduate without even having my tests take effect.
It dropped the whole wade of concern from my grades.
I shifted myself onto the large couch before staring outside of the window, noticing a black car that had parked itself behind a pole just outside of the dorm gates. Another good thing was that I had asked the president to locate my room closer to the gates.
Well, even if Mello was trying to get his hands on me, I wouldn't make it easy for him. Swishing the edges of my skirt I stood up to change into more comfortable outerwear. A jogging outfit with sweatpants that hugged my ankles. Inside my deep pockets, I shoved a phone and a pistol before sealing the zipper up.
If they want to play, then I'll play with them.
I felt a hand shoot around my neck before another hand holding a napkin covered my mouth. I held my breath, pretending to go limp as the man sighed a bit, getting ready to lumber me up on his shoulders. The moment he lifted his hand off my mouth, I shot out, kicking him in the nuts as he yelped, letting me go and crouching down onto the ground. I cackled before sprinting into the alleyways, men chasing behind me as I saw a blonde kid bark out orders in the corner of my eye. The men went around the corner as the blue-eyed boy that I presumed to be Mello started bolting after me, following my trail.
All those battle royale matches had given me the skill to parkour more or less. I stopped in front of a high fence before jumping up and climbing it, lifting my leg and plopping down to the other side while gesturing to the golden blonde hair boy with a casual lift of my middle finger.
His face instantly twisted into a dangerous grin before flashing me back with both of his middle fingers and launching himself up the fence. I scurried through the dark night, knocking over any cans and boxes that I could get my hands on and heard the endless cursings of Mello behind me. Sweat rolled off my neck as a grin widened on my face, hopping onto a garbage can before twisting my body up onto another wall, reaching out for the bars of someone's balcony and pulling myself up.
I knew that in front of me, Mello had ordered people to surround all exits, so the only way out was for me to go up. I stepped onto the railing of the bars and made a leap for it, landing roughly on another balcony before falling hard onto my butt. Mello behind me grunted as he pulled himself up.
"Catch me if you can, sucker!" I suck out my tongue with quick pants before hurling myself onto another person's balcony. I heard a click behind me before flashing a hiss at the shriek coming from my right shoulder. My left hand instantly fluttered to clinch it before I whipped around, seeing a gun in Mello's hands.
He was grinning at me aggressively like he had won the match before I pulled out my own gun from my sweatpant pockets and aimed it at him. The grin instantly disappeared from his face as he shot another bullet, matching my firing pace. I leaped down from the balcony and landed on my arms, rolling onto the floor to ease the impact of my jump as the balcony that I was standing on started to crack dangerously above me.
"It's America, fucker!" I yelled before shooting my bullets at his balcony before he tumbled down and slammed into the trash cans. Laughing evilly, I staggered up before smacking into the chest of someone. Glancing up, a tall man had his gun out and pointed to my temples.
"Aw, shucks!" I pouted as he ordered me to lower my weapon. The moment I did, someone knocked me out.
"What do you know about the Death Note?!" Mello yanked my scarlet hair that was now dishevelled by the search that his men had conducted all over my body. The good thing was that I was allowed to wear my clothes, unlike the creepy Hugo that had me undressed and forced into a random T-shirt. Thinking about it now, he was actually really nice on the fact that Hugo did not rape me while I was unconscious.
"Well," I licked my lips as Mello shone a flashlight at me, causing me to squint from the glare. What was he, broke? Could Mello not afford interrogation lights?
"The Death Note is a mass murder weapon?" I tilted my head slightly though not enough for it to hurt my scalp.
"Why did L die when interrogating you?!" His chocolate breath hissed with saliva pitting out.
What was he, a kid? Did he not learn from L that during interrogations, the person asking the questions should not show any emotion? Or at least, keep their shit together?
Well, I scrunched up my face and peered into Mello's young eyes. He was like, what- 16?
"Well duh, he died of a heart attack. Most likely Kira's doing," I added on starkly before Mello flung my head down and paced around the room.
"Why would Kira protect you?" He narrowed his eyes slightly before marching back with a smirk and pointed at my face. "You know who Kira is!"
No wonder he was considered a genius, well at least his temper made him look like a normal brat with brains.
"Correction," I lifted up my face. "If I knew who he was, Kira would have killed me to shut me up."
"Most likely Kira had found L's real name and killed him off by coincidence." I shrugged once before Mello jerked out a bar of chocolate and chomped on it like he was biting off beef jerky.
"There is no coincidence in this world," Mello frowned wider before scowling at my eyes that landed on his chocolate. "You're not telling me something."
Finally, huh? He finally calms down after eating chocolate? Well, that's a new fact.
"Tell me!" He screamed in my face as I jolted myself up. What? Well, where did all the calmness go?
"I will be the one to take down Kira! I will prove that I am the worthy successor of L!" His voice echoed out furiously in the empty room before growling out. "Fuck you Near! What do you mean I'm only second in line?!"
Blinking rapidly, I leaned backwards at his random outburst in my direction.
"Well, I'd be happy to help, cuz that Near guy sounds bratty," I mustered up my most brilliant smile before blinking innocently. "You know, I'm always second in line to my brother too."
Mello's grin instantly widened before pacing towards me.
"They are all blind," he agreed. "They only think the first is first because of a miscalculation. I will prove-"
"-That you are the best," I cut him before laughing maliciously. "Those who stand at the top use skill, and Near does not have the skill at all."
"Yes!" He jumped up before crunching on his chocolate. "I will prove to him, whatever it takes!"
"You might wanna try using my name to threaten for the Death Note-I mean, the moment you have it, you can further understand how Kira's powers are used." I suggested as he sniggered at my suggestion.
"You thought I didn't think of that already? I sent the message to your father 36 hours ago," he chuckled darkly before crunching on his chocolate bar again, licking his lips.
Yo, honestly this guy was like a man version of Misa, except less annoying. Misa did not have a brain. Or, she did, but acted on impulse 24/7. At least for Mello, he had calculated my moves and calmly surrounded me with his guards, also commanding them to corner me into an alleyway.
"What are you playing at, Sayu Yagami?" His voice darkened a few tones the moment I let a breath of relief go. I froze back up, lowering my eyes at the ground before running the thoughts. Seems like he isn't the boy version of Misa after all.
"What do you mean?" I flashed him an irresistible smile as he scoffed, shoving the half-eaten chocolate back into his pockets. Gross, was he going to continue eating that after this interrogation?
"I left the bait out for you and I knew you would take it," he pointed at me with a victorious flash that reigned across his face. "L told you about us, didn't he? You never even questioned who Near was!"
"What makes you think that?" I tilted my head, trying to think of anything that I could answer him with. What did L tell me about them? Was he trying to trick me into thinking that he had trusted me?
"Either you threatened L for information, or he willingly told you, either way, that proves that you know more about the Death Note than an average person who he interrogated," he lifted his leg and slammed it next to my tied up state. Seriously? He's not even going to give me the benefit of the doubt? While his conclusion was 100% true about me potentially threatening Watari for information, I didn't exactly get the chance.
Not that Mello would believe me if I made some random bullshit like reincarnation or making a contract with the Death God. Well...
My eyes flickered to meet his light blue ones that glared at mine.
...All I had to do now was stall for time.
"Tell me what you know," he growled while studying every emotion I had.
"The Death Note can be used when you input a name and face into the pages," I called out boredly, lifting my eyes away from the youngster's face. "You can make some kind of I-don't-know-what deal with the Death God-"
"Death God? You can actually see them?"
I clicked my tongue in annoyance at Mello's interruption before continuing nonchalantly.
"Yes, however, one Death God already died-"
"There are more Death Gods?!"
This time, my eyebrows lifted up mockingly before I quirked my lips.
"Yes," I said matter of factly. "There were two Gods that came with the two Death Notes given by the Gods."
"How did the God die?!" Mello asked again.
"I have no-"
"Boss, Yagami's phone has received a text message!" A brown-skinned guard called out before stepping into the room and handing Mello my cell phone. Mello glanced at it once before snickering at me, lifting up my phone to show me the text from Aoiko.
You were right, Sayu! Connections really did help me get a job! Thanks for the advice, I'll treat you to food the next time we meet!
A slow grin plastered onto my face as the keywords 'connection' and 'food' indicated that her mission went well.
"Better stay alive so that you can get food, huh?" Mello mocked before I wiped the grin away from my face, turning it into a slight frown despite my giddy feeling. "Let's hope your dad comes with that book in exchange for your life."
Laughing, Mello flipped my phone off before pacing outside the room with his guard.
"Oh, he will, Mello." My voice rang out like a condescending king, chucking lightly before my gaze darkened.
"Aoiko, you have a mission," my words rang out from days ago on the phone. "You will call Tsubame and order a GPS locator with speakers. The smaller the better. After that, go to Japan to pick it up, disguising it as a visit to your friends. While you're at it, telling Tsubame Sayu is sorry, and that 'this cold war between us should really just disappear because it's not healthy.'"
Aoiko's giggle resounded through her line as I continued.
"Once you return make sure you use your connections to keep tabs on a person named Soichiro Yagami who is flying into America. When his name appears, call this number and let it ring once," I gave Aoiko Chia's number. "Do you remember my dad's face when you came to my house years ago?"
Aoiko's hesitant voice rang out negative before I shook my head and told her that it was 'alright.'
"I predicted this, so don't worry," my comforting voice made her sigh in relief. "When Yagami's plane lands, make sure you're waiting outside of his gate. When you see him, run up to him and greet him saying that you are Sayu's friend. Find a way to stick the GPS tracker onto his clothes."
"After he leaves, go back to your house and take out the Death Note pages I told you to safeguard years ago. Send me a text message saying that 'connections' do work. This will indicate that my father has landed. Send another text about 'food' if you have successfully placed the tracker on his clothes. A purple-haired woman named Chia will be waiting outside your house. Give her the GPS finder.''
I took a deep breath before glancing at the clock and date.
October 1st.
"Write Soichiro Yagami's name onto the note, with the cause of Death being: Will follow all orders of Sayu Yagami until Death. Cause of Death: Original lifespan."
And with that, I hung up the phone.
