Chapter 34
Chapter 34
It was exactly the last day of May when Light vanished completely from the house. Mom was devastated when she received a call from dad, stating that Light was working on a case with L and would not be home for the next couple of weeks. But both mom and I could sense that those weeks would turn into months.
"I will do my best to have Light home as soon as possible," I heard Dad's voice bounce off the end of the phone, giving mom an empty promise. Mom knew this too, although she agreed silently, the echo of dread filled her lungs the moment she placed the phone down.
I watched as she broke down on the floor, knowing that this would be the last time that her sobs would be heard throughout the household from worry. I closed my eyes, counting the hours that Light had left the house, knowing that it was time for my show to start.
"Are you serious?" I heard Felix mumble as I slid onto the passenger's seat of his car, five other men squeezed in with me.
"Yeah, just in that forest on the edge of town," I pointed as he turned the car over and drove right into the forest.
"I cannot believe-" he parked the car and all of us got out, the five men each grabbing their own shovels and started to dig at the 4th tree after 6 specific oak trees. "That you actually succeeded in manipulating him to trust you."
"Felix, I was flabbergasted as much as you are." I pinched the bridge of my nose as a box was found after 10 minutes of digging. The blond was quiet behind me as I stepped up, taking the black box from one guy's hands and opening it to reveal the softcover of the Death Note.
I heard everyone hold their breaths as I picked it up, a gust of wind blew in our faces as Ryuk flapped his broken wings from the sky, earning silent hollers of surprise from a couple of guards including Felix. It was expected since the gang that Felix had brought were those who had all touched the Death Note. Ryuk's red eyes bore into mine as he started to crack up, throwing his head back as his body moved in syllabic movements.
His laughter echoed through the forest as the light from his eyes shone brighter, creating an illusion of red mist that surrounded us. I watched in amusement, staring at the powers that came from his casual laugh.
"Little girly! I thought that everything was a fluke back then!" Ryuk cackled even more as a few men fell over, trembling onto the ground in horror.
"Fluke? Ryuk, I thought you knew me better than that," a sly smile moved past my lips as I tossed the book towards Felix, giving him a look of warning.
"You have 4 days, Felix. Do your worst," I swung my hips as Felix nodded, escorting me back to the car.
"How's my dear brother's state, Ryuk?" I called out as he floated in with us into the car. A lot of the guards were still holding their air, trying their hardest to not touch any body part of the monster.
"He's doing better than I thought," Ryuk replied with a heavy grin, studying all my accomplices and the book that lay in Felix's hands as the car was driven by someone else.
"That time when Light was at school," Ryuk turned his bulging pupils to me with interest. "That was you who touched the Death Note, wasn't it?"
So then Ryuk could feel exactly how many people touched the Death Note? But then from his words that also meant that Ryuk couldn't tell who touched the note. That was an extremely interesting fact.
"Of course," I scoffed, rolling my eyes at his question.
"I'm surprised at how you kept your memories of the Note, girly. Does that have to do with the name behind your real name?"
I froze at his question, narrowing my eyes at the Death God.
"Name behind my name?" I repeated his words as he chuckled.
"You have two names, according to the rules, each name consists of one set of memories. The Death Note will only be able to erase the memories of your current life," Ryuk's eyes glowed red.
"Girly, this isn't your first life, is it?"
The air stilled at his words, although the wheels of the cars still rotated on, everyone stiffened like bricks except for me. It actually amazed me how long they could stay this quiet under the intense pressure of the Death God.
"That is for me to know, and you to find out, Ryuk." I said curtly, smirking. "All you have to know is that I'm not only Sayu Yagami."
"Oh, I already know that," Ryuk nodded. "What I am curious about is how your second set of memories knew about the Death Note."
"Again, Ryuk, that is not something I can carelessly speak." I brushed Ryuk's questions off as the car entered a dark tunnel, the dim lights shining down the road as we headed towards Henrik's mansion. It was curious how Ryuk didn't show the slightest surprise to my special condition. Had he seen a human-like me before? One that had the memories of their past lives?
I studied Ryuk's playful smirk before tearing my eyes away. Did it matter that there had been people before me with their memories intact of another world?
No.
It didn't matter unless it would distract or ruin my future plans.
I was escorted to my personal room that Henrik prepared for me while Felix and his men started to furiously rip the pages from the Death Note like no tomorrow.
Ryuk was silent ever since the car ride, watching me as I threw myself onto the fluffy bed with a sigh of content.
"Girly, what will you show me instead of your brother?" He asked as I turned to him with a mischievous upturn of my mouth.
"Isn't it amusing how both people, dropped out of the same womb would have so different morals and ideals, Ryuk?" I started as the Death God stared with a widening grin.
"One wants to free the world from criminals, and the other wants to be the selfish criminal," I chuckled darkly. "One is in the light, while the other is in the dark. Both try to cut each other's neck off, yet one does not know who he is facing. He is surrounded by two sides, but does not know of the second side."
"Isn't it amusing?" My eyes met Ryuk's eerie ones, flashing him an ecstatic smile. "To have your own blood betray you?"
"While that sounds all good and stuff, girly, will you be able to do it?" The edges of his tone spiked out like the points on his shoulders.
"Oh, I will, Ryuk." I licked my moist lips without hesitance at the thought of the future.
"I have told you that I am crueller than you think."
Four days had passed in a blink of an eye, Ryuk boredly sitting in mid-air as I continued my mafia classes about manipulation and psychology. School was completely over for me, instead of actually waiting for the graduation ceremony, I simply took my graduate degree and marched off campus with my friends cheering in monotones behind me.
It had been 6 days since Light gave up his ownership, and the lack of heart attacks had been broadcasted throughout the whole world. I watched as Felix buried the notebook back in place as I waved goodbye to Ryuk, releasing my ownership of the book then having Felix restore my memories almost immediately.
"How many pages do you have?" I asked with half-lidded eyes, yawning when I entered the car for the third time this day.
"Over 5000," Felix stated after starting the car, the trees in the windows blurring at the speed we went.
"By the way, isn't it Henrik's birthday today?" I spoke up, piquing Felix's curiosity as he confirmed my guesses.
"I have a present for him right here," I laughed when Felix took the thick stack of files from my backpack that I had gotten from today morning at school while taking my degree.
"What's-" He cut himself off as the pages started to reveal their own information, forcing him to gasp.
"If you need more members or spies to steal some blueprints," I waved dismissively at Felix's gaping mouth. Names and faces were plastered over every page, the state of the person's family, financial ability, and degrees that they have gotten in their past.
"I hope this helps you catch the bigger fishes that I gave you on the plane to China," I said as Felix slammed the stack shut in their binders.
"How?!" He turned at me with a completely red and boisterous voice. Approval shone through his eyes as he clutched the stack tighter in his arms with pride.
"You know the writers I told you I had?" I asked as he nodded slowly. "One of them owns an online handsewn plushie store. Another owns an illegal trade store as a thrift store in disguise."
The look on Felix's face was priceless, his wide eyes and quizzical smile made the flush on his face brighter.
"You created an information web..."
I nodded at his words.
"Needless to say, my thrift store friend is quite happy with the money I supplied her. The people who can afford pricey hand-sewn plushies would be financially stable or at least have some sort of rich backing." I explained.
"Originally I wanted to use this web to search for the orphanage that the developed genius children like L, but one person would not be able to control the massive amount of information."
Felix was absolutely mute as he turned back to the front, staring hard at the road.
"We will assist you," he said slowly and carefully. "Do you know the name of the orphanage?"
I shook my head.
"I only think it starts with Wool-something-orphanage, but the rest is vague. I'll need you to keep an eye on the guy that L contacts outside of HQ."
Felix nodded at my words before falling into silence again.
"Also, do you want my writer with the online store to move into your mansion? You can help her mass-produce her plushies by supplying her with the materials," I casually proposed as he nodded in agreement.
"That would help," he inhaled. "That would help."
After dropping me at the nearest station to my house, Felix drove away, awaiting my contact with my writers in the alleyway that we met for the first time. I phoned Isame for a full minute before she picked up with an energetic voice.
"Isame, you will write the names of your parents onto the last page of the Death Note you have left. Write the cause of death as original lifespan, and that they will follow all orders of their only daughter. Keep the last Death Note hidden in the plastic scissors that you use for sewing. Then, you will follow the man named Felix to his HQ and bring your supplies. There, you will continue to make the plushies for your online store."
I paused to take a breath.
"You will follow their orders for 7 days. Afterwards, when they have dropped their guards down, you will write the name and face of your guard onto the Death Note that you have hidden, with the cause of death being original lifespan and will follow the orders of Alyona, the boss's adopted daughter and a girl named Isame."
"Order the guard to meet with a guy named Felix. When you see the guy, write his name with the same cause of Death in secret. Order him to give you more Death Note pages. Your mission is to write every single name and face in the mafia group."
With that, I ended the call and made the last one to Hoshino, telling him that Isame will drop out of school.
I flipped off my phone and entered the house, knowing fully that I had taken away the education that Isame really wanted to become a kindergarten teacher.
Guilt was just something that I experienced and threw away for more practical uses.
It was June 8th when I finally started to act on phase one of my plan. I needed a way to wiggle myself into the Kira task force without actually becoming a member of the investigation. Personally, I knew that L would welcome me with open arms. If not, has already considered inviting me into the investigation for further analysis of my character.
Whether or not if I was Kira, I would be the second closest person other than the second Kira herself to know about my brother's secrets. I would serve as a major key proving my brother's crime, knowing that L deemed us two as close siblings.
Our interests were the same. I had to assist Light while proving my innocence, while he had to try and break me. All I had to do was play his game. The only reason he hadn't acted on my suspicion was because Light was his prime suspect and that I was too young for him to reach out and send me an invitation to his party.
Well, not if I forced his hand.
"Harder!" I hissed out as mom took a wooden twig and bashed it on my smooth pale skin, ripping some of the flesh apart as her tears started to leak down from her eyes. Even though she was crying, I had ordered her to be silent and continue with her attacks.
"Sachiko Yagami, you never cried when you sent me outside to die in the freezing cold!" I glared at her as the whips came down viciously as I commanded. Each time the pain shot into my arms, I winced and bit my lip, silencing myself even though I was the other one on the verge of tears.
Come on, hold still!
Hold it in. You have experienced far worse than this.
I whimpered as another lash came down, causing a whole part of my arm to bruise. I groaned when the blunt twig snapped in half, its sharp edges accidentally drawing blood from my veins.
"Get-" I bared my teeth into my lips. "Get the knife!"
As ordered, mom took the kitchen knife that I pointed to with shaking hands, raising the handle up to her chest and pointed down to me. Squeezing my eyes shut, I waited for the pain to shoot through my flesh. And down it came, screeching with malicious intent to harm and scar me forever.
Blood started to seep out of my skin and forced the inside corners of my eyebrows to slant upwards from the stinging sensation. I tried breathing-really tried, but the air came into the wrong lung, forcing me to bend forwards and cough blindly, white and red flashing before my eyes as I whispered out a command to stop. Mom instantly dropped the knife in her hands, clattering it as the sound echoed through the room.
"You may now cook dinner," I grunted before pulling the wrung-up long sleeves down as blood smeared through the entire fabric. Taking a deep breath to calm myself down, my eyes turned towards her barely immobile body that was opening the fridge robotically.
"We will continue this after," I heaved and trudged to the phone that was located outside of the kitchen. Pressing the dial with shaky hands, I managed to successfully enter dad's mobile number, only to be greeted by the expected voicemail.
"Dad," I whispered hoarsely into the phone, croaking out as much as possible. "When can you guys come back?"
I whimpered intentionally.
"I miss you."
And with that, I ended the call.
I repeated that process over 4 times through the next 3 days, commanding my mom to slice my legs, stomach, and back before calling my dad with a shaking voice, not leaking anything but that I missed him very much and mom has been putting on a lot of stress recently.
I cried every day that week. Not because of mental exhaustion, but because the wounds that I refused to bandage up were itching, wrenching and cracking themselves with dry tearings. Everywhere on my body, it started to twitch.
Sizzling, scaping, snapping.
Almost there, girl.
Almost there.
I endured.
On the sixth day, I finally resolved to end this scene.
"On my word 'go,' you will chase me through the house," I said cooly to mom who seemed completely broken in her form. Her clothes were splattered with my blood, her short hair was messy and disordered, unlike the first time I met her in the hospital.
Dark circles and wrinkles stretched across her face, sculpturing their marks into her bones. In her hand, she held the shiny knife that had been gashing through my skin this whole week.
"I will run out, and you will stab me like you mean it, however, don't kill me." I twitched the corners of my mouth as light shone darkly in my eyes. My whole body ached.
"You will scream repeatedly on how 'Kira took away your son and your husband.' You will shriek out throughout the neighbourhood, and if help arrives..."
I trailed off before staggering to the kitchen table and picking up the bottle of heating oil that I had asked her to buy in-store. With a heaving pull of my arm, I whipped the contents onto the kitchen ground, walking into the living room where the floor was made out of wood. The oil contents trailed behind me and splashed onto the couch, seeping into the flammable material.
"When help arrives," I threw the plastic bottle into the corner of the floor and turned around to her. "You will make a dramatic scene, and slit your throat in front of them. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Sayu," She replied robotically, swaying her arms side to side like a broken doll.
"Good," I nodded before turning back to the kitchen to search for the matches that I ordered her to buy separately with the oil. "Also, after my signal, no matter what I say, you will not follow my future commands."
With that, I phoned dad for the last time this week.
"D-dad?" I quaked my voice out, body naturally acting along with the tone I used.
"P-please come home," I begged, tears leaking out of my eyes. "Please, mom has been-she's been acting weird this whole week."
I burst into a sob.
"Please dad, you have to come back," my wails turned louder before instantly silencing them.
"M-mom?" my voice came out in a bare whisper. "No, please mom! Stop! Don't kill me!"
I amplified my panic through the phone call, screaming a couple of times before bluntly ending the call. Turning to my broken human doll with a small smirk, I lit up the match, tossing it onto the wooden floor.
"Go."
"Kira-Kira has ruined my life!" The woman screeched as I tumbled outside of the door, crying and shaking my head. "He took away my son and my husband!"
Like a maniac, the woman swung her weapon at me as I yanked my leg out of the way, only scraping my knee onto the pavement. I screamed and crawled out of the gates that separated the streets and the property, lunging upwards as I kicked my feet into a desperate run, hollering for help.
Smoke started to flee the open door of my house before the knife flew down just inches away from my face as I stared in horror at the woman who I called mom just a couple of minutes ago. My lungs burned. They scaled inside my body, flaming my face and knees like scandaling iron in contrast to my cold hands.
"Mom-" I shrieked even louder, gaining the attention from the neighbours as their heads peeked out of their windows. Their gasps and terror caught my eye as I continued to run into the driveway of the neighbour, falling dramatically onto the ground as my face smashed into the white lines that separated the lanes.
"Mom, stop!" I pleaded, getting onto my knees and begging at her, hyperventilating as the adrenaline-filled my veins, pumping more water into my leaking eyes.
"Please, they will come back! They will!" I slammed my head repeatedly onto the pavement as snot poured out of my nose. Blood trickled down in between my eyes as I saw her bare feet shuffle towards me, dirt and blood pouring from her toenails.
My vision was blurry as I heard the furious murmurings of people behind her screechings.
"Kira-has taken away my life!" Her screams echoed before she swung her weapon at me once again, this time I moved deliberately in motion with her knife, thrusting my arm forward as if to block the attack, but purposely to have my sleeve rip. Everyone gasped in horror when the slices and bruises were revealed on my arm. I heard other people cry out as they rushed towards my mother, who was swinging the knife at them.
"My son!" Her bloodshot eyes glared at the people who tried to interfere. They backed away to save themselves.
"My husband!" She snarled before turning her eyes at me. I whimpered as tears continued to drop out of my frames. My petite build shook like a fragile leaf.
Behind me, I heard the screeching of tires and a familiar voice shouting at my mom to stop her actions. I lifted my head to see the husband with wide eyes and trembling rage before a bitter smile grew onto mom's face as she slit her throat right in front of us.
A barely audible shriek flew out of the husband's mouth as his widened eyes bulged out of his sockets while blood sprayed all over the ground, painting the dirt and cement with a beautiful shade of crimson.
It's done.
I made a barely audible sigh of relief before fainting according to plan.
Author's note:
For readers concerning Sayu's cruelty, there will be character development for MC on the topic of friends. Also, don't worry about those who want to see her go on the dark path, I will merge them both.

Triple also, I just learned this in class, but, Disclaimer alert: I do not condone any use of violence or torture in real life to get what you want. This is not a story about real-life nor what has really happened.
