Chapter 3

Chapter 3

It had been 2 days since I left the hospital with a minor diagnosis of brain injury. Nothing more than temporary amnesia, which worked heavily in my favour. Huge changes in behaviour were unexplainable, yet with the lack of familiar memories....of course I could just pass it over with my impeccable title as the drama queen, which was attained from my 12th grade in high school. Yet it would be mentally exhausting. Not to mention I had already acquired enough acting experience from my past life from pretending to be...sane.

My eyes slid off the table calmly, landing on top of my brother's face. I traced his sharp jawline with my eyes, flickering back and forth between his chocolate brown hair and eyes. His mouth quirked up in a slight manner of humbleness which contrasted with his twitching eyebrows. His long fingers stretched outwards, intertwined with each other with grace.

"Sayu? Why are you staring at me?" I blinked back after hearing my name, sliding on a sly smile in reply to his wry expression.

"I don't know," I replied, huffing as I rolled onto my stomach, placing both elbows under my chin as Light's bed creased with wrinkles. My eyes flew off his face, observing his perfectly made bed before I came barging into his room, springing onto the blankets.

"Has anyone told you that you're perfect?" I cocked my head to the side, glancing at his chair which had swirled around at the beginning of our conversation. Light's smile flattered a few inches before replastering it back onto his face.

"Of course," he stated only briefly, tapping the bottom of his pen onto his table to create a steady and calming beat. "After all, I want to be a good role model for my younger sister."

I watched the rhythmic tapping of his pen in silence, fully aware of his curious stare upon my face. It was calming, yet I knew this atmosphere would soon disappear the moment that pen touched the Death Note. My eyes flickered back to Light's face, eying his watchful brown eyes without a trace of malice. Had Sayu never noticed? Never even commented on how her brother was disgustingly sweet or an overachiever? A smile quirked onto my face as I watched his calm facade under my penetrating gaze.

Impressive. Most people would have started to squirm by now.

"No, not that." I shook my head, staring innocently at the man who would proclaim himself as a God later on. "Sometimes you're just too perfect, to the point where it feels fake."

Amused, I caught the emotion of surprise flicker across his eyes as he laughed immediately, tilting his head with another sweet grin.

"What's with your questions recently?" Light's jaw tensed only a second before forcing them to relax. His brown eyes scanned suspiciously at me quickly, as if trying to search for something that could answer his question. I shrugged, sitting up from my belly flop under his casual gaze.

"Not much. It's just that," I paused deliberately, purposefully narrowing my eyes at the wall as if trying to think hard on my situation. "Ever since I came back from the hospital, everything just feels so...strange. I even start noticing things more!"

I flung my arms up, failing them animatedly over my head.

"Like, recently I just noticed dad's mustache on his morning day faces! Did you know they were exactly ten centimetres long? Or,-or, how mom cooks like some kind of 5-star chef!"

Light quirked his eyebrows in amusement.

"We never ate at a 5-star restaurant."

"Exactly!" I snapped my fingers at LIght wiggling my eyebrows in the process and making sure that I had successfully attracted his suspicions away from any serious conversations.

"It just feels like, random things are popping into my mind without triggering my old memories!" My face fell down dramatically like an abandoned puppy, then suddenly springing up like a bloated pufferfish. "Are-are you sure that I'm supposed to be out of the hospital?"

"Are you sure I didn't turn mental?!" I turned towards my brother with widened and fearful eyes, catching his quiet snicker that he immediately hid. If I had been a second late, I would have honestly doubted my entertaining skills.

"Heck, am I supposed to be put inside some kind of brain recovering facility?" I continued blabbering on, squeezing my eyes with plastic worry. "Hell, I bet one day I'll bamboozle my teachers by seeing in future!"

"What if," I cupped my face with my palms, gasping dramatically as I heard Light's warm laugh. "What if I was possessed by some ghost and started growing abs?!"

"How-did abs-"

"No, seriously, I've been doing sit ups to hype up my game yet can't tell if I was successful in an ab workout or it's my organs that are hurting right now."

I cut Light's words and looked at him dead in the eye with a deadpan expression. It took a full minute before Light's lips twitched upwards along with a couple of snickers before fully composing himself, attempting to place on a more serious facade. After a few more chuckles, he slowly walked towards me and ruffled my hair.

"No matter how much you change, you'll still always remain as my sister."

"Even if I suddenly grew a dick?"

Light's face instantly flushed with a tint of pink as he choked on air, making incoherent wheezes.

"I'm sorry-what?"

"Yeah...in that way I technically wouldn't be your 'sister' anymore." I quoted with both of my fingers.

"Sayu-where did you even-"

"What do you mean? Oh, the bees and the flowers part? My school teacher taught us that-hey what's with that expression?!"

I jumped up, pivoting on the balls of my feet and started following him with a whole lot of nonsense.

"Mom," Light raised his voice over mine, dragging the vowel as his eyes danced mirthfully over mine. "Sayu's interested in-"

"Don't you dare!" I growled before launching my body at the male, hearing a faint 'omph' from the boy before I shot him my most vicious-like glare.

"I do not need another lecture of bees and flowers! My teacher has already made it painfully excruciating from my previous experience-"

"Or else?" Light raised his eyebrows, grinning flamboyantly at my wordless threat. I raised mine, not expecting his willing patience to actually listen to my threat.

"Or else," I chuckled darkly, ideas flashing through my brain, each image being more gory than the last one. I can chop you up and blend them in a blender. I can serve your guts to our parents, minced and stir fried with vegetables. I can gouge your eyes out, fermentate it and use it to miso cook soup, so that the taste would be evident to the point where you can puke just from smelling it. I can pull each one of your toenails, and make you bleed.

"Or else I will latch onto you for the rest of the night!" I glanced up from my thoughts, grinning mischievously at Light.

"That doesn't sound too bad." Light smirked at my threat, practically dragging my handing body with him as I gasped while clutching my grip around his waist.

"Don't you dare!" Shaking my head and grinning, I gripped him tighter in satisfaction after hearing him wince a bit.

"Now I've changed my mind..." Light's murmur passed my ears before we reached into the kitchen, meeting my mom's surprised face.

"Sayu, don't bother your brother too much." Mom laughed lightly at the scene, not questioning exactly how Light attained an attached sister around his waist. The smell of curry filled my nostrils as I threw Light to the side, dashing to the food with gleaming eyes without turning around to see the confused state my brother was in.

"Don't worry mom," I grinned cheekily at her as I heard Light grunt wordlessly behind me, following me to the table. "I'm keeping my annoyance levels under the red line!"

I created an invisible line by slashing through the air like I was cutting invisible sashimis.

"As long as it doesn't bother Light it's fine." Soichiro Yagami walked out of the hallway and into the dining room before sniffing the air and chuckling at his own family. He yanked his tie loose before taking off his black suit coat and hanging it onto the back of the wooden dining chair.

"After all, my son is aiming for To-Oh University!" Dad puffed out his chest and grinned wider despite his fatigue down across his face.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. If only he knew...

I felt the bubbling amusement creep into my eyes as Light noticed my unexpected hoy. Heh, at least at the end of Soichiro's life, Light did not reveal his identity as Kira, in which was probably his last favour he did for his dad. Though...imagine the terror and pure devastation on dad's face if he knew he gave birth to the greatest mass murderer in history!

A hint of madness entered my expression as I immediately pressed it down.

"I bet Light could bet into the top university without even trying!" My pitch came out high, smugly smirking as I glanced at my brother. Light's eyes twinkled darkly for a moment at my words, turning his attention towards the dinner table right after.

"Sayu, To-Oh isn't that easy to get into." Mom smiled warily at my comment, shaking her head gently before leaning her face against her palm. "Isn't that right, dear?"

"That's right, Sayu." Dad cleared his throat after being called upon, digging his clean spoon into his rice and mixing the spoonful with the beef curry placed inside his dish. "Light is studying diligently in order to get in To-Oh. Don't underestimate the standards this year, Light."

Dad looked over at Light who was now leaning both arms on the table, his chopsticks in one hand and the other lay casually in behind his dish. Light's eyes strayed from his bowl landing on his father's face with a knowingly look plastered as his expression. His eyes though, shot something more of boredom and carelessness.

"If you need any help, Light, be sure to tell me. I will do everything in my power to support you."

"Thank you, dad." LIght's grateful smile immediately resurfaced on his face, erasing all trace of remaining thoughts. "Really, I am grateful. But it should be fine."

A satisfied beam lit up on Dad's face as he nodded at his son's response. It was weird, because I could somehow read Light's expression when his other family members couldn't. Maybe it was because I knew his face without his mask, or maybe because I was an actor myself. It seemed so obvious that it irked me in some way, wanting to call him out right then and there. But at the same time, I felt reassured.

He wasn't able to completely fool me.

Not yet, at least.

Which was good for me, because the moment he was able to manipulate my thoughts and actions, would be the day where I'd lose control over the game. A game where two players did not know of a third player.

"Sheesh, Light can probably ace the test without even studying." I paused ever so slightly and continued with a dark tone. "Isn't that right, Light?"

His gaze shot over to meet mine, a skeptical gleam underlined his near-perfect facade at my comment. His face never flattered with the relaxed look, shrugging at me before letting the corner of his lips twist upwards. For a bitter moment, my stomach knotted as a buzzy feeling burned against my chest, rattling my emotions.

For once in Sayu's life, I felt weary. In fact, anxious. Something of his gaze was unsettling as if he was trying to figure the matrix in my brain. I had no idea how I knew, but instinctively I felt his underlying curiosity piercing through his eyes as he stared into his curry dish.

No, he wasn't mad. He wasn't even shaken.

He was amused.

As if he found a new toy to play with.

And it did not settle well with me.

So what if I could read his emotions? How would I know if he was testing me in the beginning? Ever since I left the hospital and started to act strangely?

I shuddered uncontrollably, tearing my gaze away from this monster.

And here I thought I was the monster.

Author's note:

Seriously, I cannot write humour for dear lord's sake. I've been searching up random videos on youtube, yet I still can't grasp my own humour in writing. What the heck am I even doing...?

Just total confusion on my part.

Anyhow, by now a few of you may be realizing my abomination to grammar. Comment if you do!

Also, I realized that the site Fanfiction is seriously a bad platform for feedback and criticism. When the number of fanfictions has exceeded the number of readers and people on the site. *eye rolls*

It's so hard for a pimp out there to try and cut a slice of attention!

Reviews are desperately needed! Love ya!
