06: a new home
I sat in the backseat of a very posh mercedes. It was black, sleek and shiny, a kind of luxury I had never enjoyed before.
The seats were soft and felt expensive. I slid over to the window seat and Bruce Wayne got into the passenger side. An old man wearing a tuxedo sat behind the wheel.
"Good afternoon, Master Bruce and Miss Sasha," the man said, looking at me through the rear-view mirror. "I'm Alfred Pennyworth, Master Bruce's butler. Please call me Alfred."
I nodded but did not reply. I was feeling quite nervous for some reason. I had never met these men before and it felt strange being in this expensive car.
"Alfred, Sasha will be staying with us until another home can be arranged," Bruce told his butler.
Alfred started the car and began to drive. "I look forward to getting to know you, Miss Sasha," he smiled.
I felt a little more relaxed after that, and leaned my head on the window. It was raining outside, so i watched the droplets slide down the glass and gather at the sill.
Outside on the street stood civilians with raincoats and umbrellas. A couple sat at a coffee shop and enjoyed a meal together, while a dog ran across the pavement, pulling a little girl behind him with his leash.
After a while, we'd moved away from the busy streets of Gotham and edged closer to the quiet suburbs.
"We're here," Bruce announced, and I sat up quickly. I had been so distracted by the scenery that I didn't even realize how long we'd driven for.
Alfred opened the car door for me and I stepped out. What I was met with was beyond anything I'd ever seen.
A huge mansion, even bigger than Midnight, sat before me. We had driven through large, black gates into a courtyard with a fountain in the middle and neatly-trimmed hedges along the side. Alfred led us to the large front door and we headed inside.
It was even better on the inside then on the out...
The foyer was beautiful, with two grand staircases leading up to an open balcony above. The floors and walls were a stunning white marble material. There seemed to be hundreds of hallways and rooms connected to this area, and I wondered how long it would take me to visit all of them.
"Boys!" Bruce yelled up the stairs, the noise echoed through the huge foyer.
It was so amazing here. I had a feeling I would enjoy my time at this place.
Wait, boys?
The serenity of the room was interrupted when the sound of several footsteps cascaded down the stairs. I looked up and my eyes widened as four boys of different ages headed towards Bruce. They stared at me and suddenly I felt nervous again.
"Boys, this is Sasha, the girl I was telling you about? Sasha will be staying here with us for the time being," he said and gave me a sideways smile.
The tallest one, a guy with dark brown hair and an attractive smile stepped toward me.
"Hi, I'm Richard. You can call me Dick, though," he told me and shook my hand eagerly. It felt weird shaking someone's hand, I had never done that before.
"Hey," I mumbled back.
Why was I so shy all of a sudden? Everything was so overwhelming.
"I'm Jason," the second guy said.
He looked about 18, and he had dark hair with a strand of white at the front. It was an odd style, but he was also very attractive and he could pull it off.
"My name's Timothy, but call me Tim," the second-shortest kid spoke and gave me a smile.
He also had dark hair, with matching blue eyes. And now that I thought about it, they all did. It was funny.
"And this is Damian," Tim added, placing a hand on the youngest kid's shoulder.
My eyes drifted to the fourteen year old boy standing directly in front of me, wearing a navy sweater and slacks.
Damian was... attractive. I mean, they all were, but there was something even more astonishing about him.
He had skin slightly tanner skin than the rest, and although he shared the same silky black hair, his eyes were a beautiful shade of emerald.
However it was a shame that all his beauty had been foiled by the deathly scowl planted on his face. His arms were crossed over his chest and glared at me, not saying a word.
What's his problem?
"Anyway, welcome to Wayne Manor," Bruce said and touched me gently on the shoulder. "Alfred will show you around and take you to your room. I have a meeting to attend, but the boys will keep you company for now."
I had never been shown this much affection in my life.
"Uh, thank you..." I replied, unsure what else to say. It felt weird being treated nicely like this.
Bruce walked off and Alfred moved to my side. "Shall I show you around?" He asked.
I nodded and followed him up the huge staircase. I glanced back at the four boys, who smiled at me, all except one.
I could tell Damian didn't like me. But that was fine, I was used to that.
---------------------------------
The tour of Wayne Manor lasted a good hour. The place was huge - literally! I had never seen anything like it.
There was a large pool in the yard, too, which looked really nice. I hoped I was staying here until the summer so I could swim. It was much too cold now, being the beginning of February. But then again, Midnight had taught me how to swim in icy waters filled with bombs I had to defuse.
There were many, many rooms in the manor, but I have to say that mine looked truly beautiful.
The walls were tall and white, and a king-size bed sat in the middle. Opposite was a fireplace and big TV, and next to that was a cool chair that looked really comfy.
The floor was soft and carpeted white. From where I was standing at the doorway, directly opposite me were beautiful french doors that opened up to a balcony.
It also had a sofa, coffee table and two chairs. To the left side of the room was an en suite, a crisp-white bathroom that was nearly as big as the room itself. And to the right of the room, there was a huge walk-in closet.
This probably amazed me the most. The amount of clothing in there was remarkable. I only ever owned a few pairs of garments back at Midnight, which was not a lot. But this wardrobe? It was insane.
Why were there so many dresses? Who could afford that many diamond embellishments? And the amount of mirrors surrounding me... It was like a maze in there.
There was a full cupboard of shoes. So many shoes. Boots, heels, flats, sneakers, flip flops, converse. I couldn't believe how much stuff was in here. How much stuff belonged to me.
However, I did notice a lack in casual clothing. It mainly seemed to be gowns and fancy coats. Plus there was no underwear either, which was kind of important. Alfred noticed me staring in the empty undergarments drawer and spoke up.
"Master Bruce wanted you to choose some clothing for yourself, too. Miss Brown and Miss Gordon are to take you shopping sometime this week," he informed me.
I frowned in confusion.
"Who?"
He replied, "You'll meet them later. But for now, I suggest we get you changed out of those clothes? Unless you prefer wearing something twice your size..."
I looked down at my ugly outfit and cringed. "No, I'd definitely like to change."
Alfred left me to sort myself out. He was a very nice man, with a posh British accent that made me feel like I was at Buckingham Palace. He never told me what to do, only suggested things. It was nice not to be ordered around so much. I liked him already.
I decided to take a shower in the luxurious bathroom. It felt like a dream. The warm water ran down my back and I felt all my troubled wash away. I used the expensive shampoo and conditioner on my hair, then blow-dried it when I was done.
I had never blow-dried my hair before.
It seemed pretty simple, just hold the hot-air-machine to my hair and move it around until it was dry. After that, I moved to the closet and selected something to wear.
I avoided the dressy section, because those items looked way to complicated to put on. Instead I chose a plain gray sweater and a pair of ripped jeans. The sweater had a little symbol in the corner followed by the word "Champion." I wasn't sure what that meant, but I wore it anyway.
The jeans fit pretty well, surprisingly. And since I was inside, I chose not to wear any shoes in fear of ruining the perfectly-polished floors. I put on some fluffy socks instead and they felt magical on my sore feet.
I wondered around the closet-maze for a little longer, observing all the items in there. There seemed to be a section for hair and make-up, with a mirror, vanity and drawers full of products. Lights lined the sides of the mirror, making me feel like a movie star in a dressing room.
This place is so cool.
I pulled open the drawers and took out a rectangular box. I opened the flap, and inside were different shades of powder. I guessed that it was a make-up palette, though I'd never used one before and had no idea how. I had no intentions of using it now, however, and put it away.
Instead I found a hair elastic and put my blonde locks into a bun.
There was a strange feeling in my stomach when I made my way back down the stairs. It felt so foreign moving around this house like it was my home. Everything was just so new.
But I kind of liked it. My time at Midnight was hardly an excuse for a life. But compared to this luxurious place and the lifestyle it had to offer? it made my whole childhood look like complete shit.
Wayne Manor was a dream. It was beautiful and luxurious, and I was lucky to be living here. I just hoped I wouldn't wake up soon and find it all gone... I couldn't go back to the way life was before. No, I didn't want to live through that torture.
I made my way to the living room, remembering the tour Alfred had given me. I had been trained to have a photographic memory, and that really came in handy when navigating the gigantic mansion.
Two of the boys, Richard and Tim, sat on the sofa holding weird remotes in their hands. Richard saw me and his face lit up.
"Hey, Sasha! Come join us," he said, calling me over to the couch.
Hesitantly, I moved and sat down in front of the TV. The boys seemed to be playing some kind of game. Dick handed me a remote and began to explain what to do.
"Just press this button to move forward and this one to accelerate. Yeah, like that."
I was controlling a brightly-colored car on the screen. If I moved the little joystick, my vehicle would move however I wanted.
The objective of the game was to win by beating everyone else. I was racing against Tim and Dick, along with other random cars. I beat them four times, including on my first go. They got pretty frustrated by the end and I couldn't help but laugh.
Wow, I haven't laughed in a while.
"Hah! You dipshits just got beat by someone who didn't know what a video game was ten minutes ago," Jason shouted at Dick from behind the sofa.
I grinned with pride. Winning had felt pretty good.
"Sasha, you want a drink?" He added.
I nodded and let him hand me a red can. I stared at it for a second, a little unsure what I was holding.
"It's called coke. It's good," Jason said.
I popped it open and took a sip. The fizzy liquid filled my mouth with a bitter-sweet taste.
"That is good," I told him with a smile. He laughed and patted me on the shoulder.
Alfred walked in seconds later and stood in the doorway.
"I hope you're treating Miss Sasha well?" He asked, and the boys all nodded.
"Of course, Alfred," Tim replied.
Alfred smiled. "Good. Who's hungry? Miss Sasha, any meal preferences?"
Everyone looked at me expectantly.
"Uh... chicken?" I answered, not sure what else to say. Chicken was my favorite food, and the first thing that came into my head.
Tim yelled out "Yes!" and the boys laughed. Alfred left to prepare our food.
Damian entered soon after with a scowl on his face. I was watching Jason verse Dick in the racing game, and things were getting pretty intense.
"Shit!" Jason shouted when Dick pushed him off-course and into a ditch.
"Language," Dick tutted.
"Fuck you," Jason replied sharply, and Tim laughed.
Damian scoffed from behind us. "Video games are for children. You're much too old for them, Grayson."
I turned around and watched him open up a large book.
"Shut up, demon-spawn," Jason groaned.
Dick only chuckled. "You can't outgrow Mariokart, Dami."
"Don't call me that," Damian snarled, which ended in everyone repeatedly yelling the word "Dami."
I tried my best not to laugh, Damian seemed pretty scary when he was mad. When Alfred returned twenty-minutes later, the game was paused so we could eat our snack.
---------------------------
That night, I laid in my new bed feeling quite content. Bruce's son's were very nice to me today, I didn't feel nervous around them anymore. Well, except for Damian. But I could deal with him.
I was used to kids hating me at Midnight. People often thought I was given special treatment because my father was Deathstroke. That wasn't true, he hardly even cared about me.
I had learnt to deal with their rude attitudes and dumb jokes. Flynn loved to annoy me the most, usually out of boredom. But he was gone now. Gone.
I came to realize that my old life was behind me now. That a new chapter of my life had begun. I was free. I could start over, make new friends, enjoy new interests. Maybe I could even forget about Midnight entirely...
That last thought didn't seem very likely. But I could always try.
I turned over in my sheets and onto my side. I was wearing a nice pair of matching silk pajamas, and they felt wonderful on my skin. I figured that I deserved some luxury in my life after all those years at the facility. That had been pretty rough, sharing a room with fifty kids at night.
And it was worse when we were all getting changed. Boys would whistle at me and make stupid comments. The amount of times I'd had to punch someone for touching me was beyond numbers.
But here I was now, in my own room, with my own huge bed and my own bathroom to shower and change in. Life felt pretty good.
I just really hoped it would stay this way.
what do you think? Sasha seems pretty happy in her new home. im so excited to introduce the boys and especially damian! there'll be some tension between those two later...
love you guys, x
