12. Unwinding
After they ate, Yeosang did the dishes and checked his phone. Its vibrations always made Anubis jump out of his skin or bare his teeth, not used to all the weird, alarming noises around him. He asked Yeosang once what purpose it had to always be on edge for all sorts of things, and Yeosang couldn't even explain why humans liked to do that.
He whipped out his charger as he wandered into the living room where Anubis had tugged out his books already. Once more, a yell interrupted him.
"Aargh!"
Clueless, Yeosang stared at Jongho and his hasty gesturing at the cable in Yeosang's hands as if he wasn't aware of it. Once he realised it was no danger, he rolled his shoulders.
"I thought I saw Apep, that slithering villain!"
Apep, the snake-god of chaos. Luckily, the Netherlands didn't tend to have snakes in the homes of its people.
"Just a rope, no worries. They connect the magic to the magic boxes. I have several ones around, but snakes aren't common here," Yeosang soothed him and Jongho nodded with another suspicious glance at the item.
"I'm going out, so I have to get dressed now and I might come back late or only in the morning. Just go to sleep without me. You know how to extinguish the fires." He turned on his heel to get dressed, but Anubis stood to follow him, curious about the ever so rare activity in Yeosang's life outside of work.
And it was much needed right now. Yeosang needed time away to empty his head and not think about gods and prophecies for a few minutes. Anubis consumed his life right now, and he was glad to take some time off with Wooyoung and Yunho. It would have been lovely if Seonghwa could have joined them, but Yeosang couldn't muster the courage to invite him.
While he picked out his least nerdy outfit so Wooyoung wouldn't be disappointed in him, Jongho leaned against the doorframe.
"You are dressing up. What for? A lady you woo?"
He was really stuck on that, wasn't he? To him, someone of Yeosang's age without a partner (or harem) by his side had to look like a lost cause.
As long as Jongho wouldn't try to wingman him with some divine intervention, Yeosang shrugged it off. He was long past those pressures through stereotypes. Anubis was forgiven, since he was used to a different time.
Yeosang pulled some items out of his closet, comparing them to each other to gauge his mood. Was he feeling racy enough for a cropped top? Or was the one with the chest cutout that Wooyoung loved so much better?
"Just some celebrations with friends," he assured Jongho as he threw the top with the cutout on his bed and dug around for his leather pants. Wooyoung promised to do his makeup for him, and Yeosang always got to pick from Yunho's jewellery box on these occasions.
Anubis wasn't easily shaken off.
"There is a festival? Take me along!" He demanded, eager to mingle and get up to his godly mischief.
But Yeosang closed his closet and picked up his clothes to change in the bathroom.
"Maybe next time."
With that, he locked himself in to get ready and put in his contact lenses for the occasion. Wooyoung always told him he was "a sex god under all those boring sweaters" and while Yeosang didn't see himself in that role, some eye shadow and a few shiny silver accessories made a huge difference.
What would Seonghwa look like when he went to a club? Or did he prefer the presence of his books?
Yeosang didn't know too much about his hobbies, aside from the fact that Seonghwa also tried to grow plants and often brought Yeosang his wilting results as patients. He swore he treated them well, but somehow, they always ended up gloomy and needed Yeosang's magical touch to come back to life. He also met one of Seonghwa's friends, a guy named Hongjoong who brought him to work once.
He and Seonghwa had been night and day. Hongjoong pulled up in an expensive black car and dressed in designer clothes that made him look sleek and sophisticated. Seonghwa had hopped out of his car with his adorable pink hair and the knitted sweater and waved at a helpless Yeosang who had to watch as his crush had been kidnapped by some hot demon with a handsome smirk.
His confidence took a huge hit after that, but Seonghwa assured him that Hongjoong was like family to him. They had known each other forever, and he wasn't Seonghwa's type.
Which in turn boosted Yeosang's confidence because that meant he might be.
Glaring at his blushing cheeks in the mirror, Yeosang emerged from the bathroom. He said his goodbyes to Jongho to finish getting ready over at Wooyoung's and was received with kisses to both cheeks as Wooyoung declared him as hot enough to be seen with. (Lucky Yeosang.)
Wooyoung sat on his lap with the makeup palette in hand, running the many brushes and liners over Yeosang's face while he babbled about their location options for tonight. Yunho joined them sometime later, silver necklaces dangling over his sheer net shirt. He whistled at the two of them and Wooyoung batted coy lashes before he finished up.
Once Yeosang also picked some necklaces and rings, they were good to go. Wooyoung hooked his arm into Yeosang's as they took the bus downtown. He was wearing leather pants as well, and his halfway open shirt showed off his chest. In true Wooyoung fashion, a big fur coat couldn't miss, and he was a cosy pillow to snuggle into during their ride.
Upon arriving at the club, they got some drinks to warm up and check out the venue. It was late enough for the dance floor to be bustling with life, full of hot queers of all genders and styles. Yeosang spotted a bunch of handsome people right away and felt gazes on them just as much.
While Yeosang sipped his sour and delicious drink, Yunho made himself as their personal bodyguard, cautious that nobody would get too close. And while his arms were a delight to snuggle into and relish the jealous gazes on their trio, Yeosang sought the thrill of his blood pumping to the music, the swirl of colours, the dizzying dance.
Today was the perfect opportunity to get wasted. He didn't want to think tonight, didn't want to ponder the end of the world and ancient myths. He just wanted to have fun.
So he downed his drinks quickly until the buzz set in, until his brain was wiped clear of all the bothersome worries haunting him. He giggled with Wooyoung, leaning into each other with the occasional harmless kiss while Yunho watched over them and the people who approached them.
Yeosang's finger traced the rim of his glass. The heavy beat of the music seemed to bounce around his skull. Though the air was heavy with perfumes and artificial smoke and the scent of sweaty people crowding on the dance floor, he gladly breathed its fumes into his lungs.
"If you ever met an Egyptian god, how would you react?" He turned to Wooyoung, leaning into his shoulder when Wooyoung wrapped an arm around his waist. His smokey, lidded eyes stared at the muscle of Yeosang's chest through the cutout of his shirt, then he traced his gaze up to his lips, trying to process what he heard through the noise.
"Any god? Which are the cool ones? Bastet, maybe?" Wooyoung dug around his head for the information on Egyptian gods he learned during his time in the museum. Then he pouted to himself.
"I don't know. Ask them how they feel about marrying their siblings and parents? Nah, not that it mattered back then. Huh. Any of them a good fuck?"
They giggled, too drunk already to get anything of sense out. Yunho slipped back to their side with more drinks and Yeosang made eager grabby hands at him until the sweet taste was back on his tongue.
"Do you believe in the end of the world?" He asked next and Yunho looked at them funny, but Yeosang and Wooyoung were too busy pondering their existence to mind him.
"Hmm, your field of interest sure calls for it, doesn't it? Perhaps aliens might come, perhaps a big flood takes it all away," Wooyoung said, cheering to that before he took another hearty sip. The flush to his cheeks was permanent by now, making him look even more delectable.
"Do you think life would come to an end if the sun disappeared?" Yeosang remembered the few myths Egyptians had about the end. Anubis sought darkness and death to work in, but he wasn't the one who caused the potential end in their myths. Other gods, those of chaos and mischief, would suck up all life.
But humanity was equipped differently now. They could make their own light, right? Those myths could only apply to the civilisation long passed and their fear of the night. By now, they might not matter since science knew better.
But then, why would Anubis insist that the end was inevitable?
Wooyoung shrugged by Yeosang's side.
"Probably. At least all vegetation would, and we would fall sick. Scared of those tales? Let's dance!" He jumped up from the bench when he sensed how gloomy Yeosang was feeling. It worked and in an instant, Yeosang forgot his worries to grab his hand. He let himself be twirled along onto the dance floor, between colourful lights and music hammering onto his brain from every direction. Their giggles were foolish again when they spun around each other, twirling however seemed most fun.
They got some people around them into the merrymaking. A girl with long hair tugged her girlfriend into their circle and they hopped around each other, igniting the joy in Yeosang's warm heart. He fell into the arms of some other guy, tall and goth, looking like a vampire and perhaps he would have paused to consider if vampires were real now too, since gods were real, but it didn't matter. Yeosang danced with him, their bodies pressed tightly together as the guy whispered into his ear what a pretty little thing he was. Yeosang breathed in his scent of cherries and cigarette smoke.
The arms around him were warm. The world spun with delight. Yeosang kissed him when his lips came near and hot fingers seemed to scorch his hips.
Yunho came along to have an eye on the two rascals, so he was sober enough to push in between when the vampire dude switched from hot kisses that melted Yeosang in his arms to dragging him to the front door. Yunho's gentle hands pried Yeosang off and he immediately spun to cling to Yunho instead, always finding him the cosiest teddy bear.
His kissing partner made no trouble, taking off to kiss someone else, but not before winking at Yeosang again. Mourning his touch, Yeosang pouted after him.
Yunho plucked Wooyoung from the dance floor as well once he complained about feeling dizzy.
"Come on, you two, time to go home. It's late enough now and you can sleep off the buzz," he instructed them like kindergarteners and Yeosang obediently slipped into his jacket.
Wooyoung whined.
"Wanna suck you off. You look so pretty tonight," he complained and Yunho patted his hair.
"Let's talk about that at home, babe. Go on, take each other's hands."
Wooyoung and Yeosang clung to each other, giggling as they followed Yunho past the crowd and into the refreshing night air. On the ride back home, Yeosang babbled to Wooyoung about the true depth behind the words "Mind your step." on the bus.
Somehow, Yunho got them up the stairs despite all their whining. He fumbled with Yeosang's keys first while Wooyoung kissed Yeosang, promising to find him again one day. Tonight didn't work, since he had a date with Yunho.
Yunho finally got the door open and tugged on Yeosang's hand. Cosied against Wooyoung's shoulder, Yeosang never wanted to leave. After telling them his drunken goodbyes and stumbling into his flat, he only saw a blurry outline of a man, dark hair and tanned skin, handsome. When he stretched out his arms, Yeosang happily tumbled into them, giggling when he collided with a firm chest. Warm palms landed on his hips and he believed to hear a greeting in some long dead language that only registered in the back of his mind.
"Oh, hello, beautiful."
Yeosang wanted to be coy, wanted to continue his night of fun, flirt back, get another kiss maybe, but he was too exhausted. He fell asleep right then and there, not a worry in the world.
