Chapter 6: Weight of The World
Chapter 6:
I walked ahead of everyone else, not wanting to speak to anyone. Last night was crazy. I shared some of my deepest thoughts with Gavin, protect the group from walkers, and then make out with Gavin.
I was so confused as to why I did that. I wasn't gay. I still found woman attractive. Hell, I made sure by checking Barbara out each day. And Lindsay... When she was still alive. But now I was confused. I still found girls attractive but I felt like there was something about Gavin that made me attracted to him as well.
I groaned as my thoughts didn't help my situation at all. I stopped to scan the upcoming fields. We'd been walking for about five hours now and my legs were beginning to get sore from the rough terrain. I noticed the group was looking tried as well and I knew we'd have to stop soon. Geoff was carrying Millie and Jack was carrying his daughter as well. I sighed and continued to scan the terrain before me.
I felt my heart leap when I saw an abandoned farm up ahead. I smiled and called the guys to look where I was pointing.
"We could stop there and stay for the night. We'll be safe there until tomorrow morning," I muttered. Geoff and Jack both smiled and I knew they were especially excited to finally get to take a break from carrying the kids.
I led them forward and toward the farm house. First, I'll scavenge the house for walkers and supply's, and then tell the people that were the weakest or most tired to stay there. I'd then evacuate the farm and make sure everything was clear there before moving the rest of the group in there.
Once I made it to the house, I readied my pistol and motioned for Gavin to follow me in. I noticed the look of surprise he had when I told him to follow me, but he nevertheless readied his knife and followed.
I busted the door down and pointed my pistol around the house. Nothing. I walked around the rooms slowly, Gavin going into other rooms. I heard a yelp come from the kitchen and I ran to it, watching Gavin push off a walker that had a knife embedded in it's skull.
"Came out of nowhere," Gavin muttered. He looked up at me before retrieving his knife and wiping the blood off on the walkers clothes.
"Stay near me then. We'll watch each other's backs," I told him. Gavin gave me a flustered look but I just rolled my eyes, hiding my blush and walking out of the room.
I cleared the rooms downstairs and made my way upstairs. We brought down two more walkers and made sure they were taken care of.
I walked into the bathroom and made a strange discovery. A dog. It was curled up behind the toilet and it gave me a frightened look. I brought my pistol down and eyed the dog before kneeling down. It, almost instantly, ran toward me and nuzzled into me. I pet it a little, realizing it was a male. He looked a little strange. His coat was of a Labrador but he defiantly had something else in him. Pit Bull, maybe?
"Mi-cool, I cleared out the rest of the rooms. Want me to get Jack and Ryan to help carry the bodies out?" Gavin asked me. I didn't respond, making Gavin come into the bathroom and see my discovery.
"He just ran up to me. I think he belonged to this family," I told him. Gavin bent down and started petting the dog as well.
"You're not getting attached, are you? We can't bring along a dog," Gavin muttered.
"Why not? It's just a dog. It'll eat whatever we don't or can't," I told him.
"Yeah, but what'll happen when it turns against us?" Gavin asked.
"That's not gonna happen!" I argued with him. Gavin sighed and rolled his eyes, standing back up.
"It's your call, Michael. You're the leader," Gavin told me before walking back down the stairs.
I sighed and looked back down at the dog. It was skinny, but looked pretty fit. I smiled and began walking down the stairs, watching the dog follow me.
When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I watched as Jack and Ryan carried a body out of the kitchen and outside. Geoff and Gavin went back up the stairs, nodding slightly to me. I walked out back to the group and looked around at them, debating on who'd be staying in here.
Gus, Millie, and all the younger kids. Their mothers too. Geoff and Jack would most likely want to stay with their families so they'd be in here too. I guess Barbara and Meg could be in here as well.
I called for everyone who'd be staying in here. They all walked past me and I saw Gus smile at me slightly as his wife and Burnie helped him inside.
"Alright! The rest of you will be in the barn. Come on," I called them. I led the way to the barn and scanned about in it. No walkers. Good.
Everyone began settling in there. Ray and I started talking about random things and I forgot that he was one of my best friends before the apocalypse. Talking to him now was like nothing had ever happened, and it was nice.
Gavin and the others came in shortly after and settled down as well. Gavin got comfortable on one of the hay bales and curled up, closing his eyes. I smiled at his adorable face.
Ray noticed my staring and he snapped his fingers in front of my face. I shook my head and looked at him, annoyed.
"What?" I asked him. He smirked and held his hands up.
"Hey, I didn't say anything. But, if I had to guess, I'd say you were checking Gavin out," Ray teased. I rolled my eyes and shoved him.
"I wasn't checking him out. I was making sure he was okay, is all," I told him. He shrugged and leaned back.
"Whatever you say, Mikey," Ray smirked. I ignored his teasing and turned back to the group.
They were all settling down and preparing for the night. Good. I felt the dog I had found curl up around my legs and rest as well. What the hell am I gonna do with this dog? It felt wrong to leave it here all by itself. Maybe I could take it along. Dogs ate close to everything. Plus, when we ran out of food, he'd be a good helper when out hunting.
I pet the dog a little, debating whether or not to name it. If I named it, then I was devoted to protecting and taking care of it. The dog looked at me with bright amber eyes and I knew I had lost myself there. I was defiantly keeping him.
"Hey, Ray, what do you think of the name Ash?" I asked him. Ray gave me the most dumbfounded look.
"Did you really just ask me that?" Ray asked me. I smirked and shrugged.
"Shit, I didn't even realize what that could refer to. Anyway, you think it's a good name?" I asked him. Ray nodded quickly and I smiled down at my newly named dog.
Barbara came up to me. I looked up at her and I saw her looking down at the ground.
"Michael, can we talk?" Barbara asked me. I gave her a nervous look but followed her out of the barn.
We walked around the fields a little bit. We didn't say anything but I could tell from the sad glances she kept giving me that something was defiantly wrong. After we had walked for about ten minutes I stopped and looked at her.
"What is it?" I asked her expectantly. I then saw tears prick her eyes and felt my heartbeat pick up.
"Lindsay told me something before she died. Actually, it was a while ago when she told me. Like before this entire thing started," She told me. I felt compelled to listen intently now. Barbara grabbed my hands and looked into my eyes.
"Michael, Lindsay was pregnant," She told me.
I felt my heart drop. Lindsay was pregnant? Like... Actually pregnant? Which meant I would've been a father. I would've had to raise a child in this type of world. But, I still would've done it. Wait... So not only did I lose my wife, but I also lost the child I didn't know about until now.
"She... Was pregnant?" I asked hesitantly. Barbara nodded and let out a sob. I sighed and looked around again before collapsing to the ground and beginning to cry again.
Barbara wrapped her arms around me and cried with me. I forgot Lindsay was her best friend and it was probably just as hard losing her as it was for me.
"I'm so sorry, Michael. This shouldn't have happened to you. I'm so sorry," She muttered over and over again. I shook my head and tried to get myself to stop crying. Of course, that only led to more tears.
"I want to be alone. Please," I told her. Barbara understood and got up, wiping away her tears before leaving.
Why did this happen to me? What the fuck did I do to deserve this? I cried out as loud as I could, not caring who could hear me. This wasn't fair. Life was so fucking unfair. Whoever thought that life was a good idea is a fucking idiot.
I noticed that it was starting to get dark. I heard the familiar moans off in the distance and I got up, running back to the barn. I scrubbed at my cheeks, trying to get the tears off. I finally did once I walked into the barn.
Most of the group was sleeping. I crawled over to my spot next to Ray and I noticed Gavin was still awake. I looked around, noticing everyone was asleep. I walked over to Gavin and looked down at him.
He had his back turned from me. He was shaking a little, but not like he was cold. Like he was crying. I placed a hand on his shoulder, which caused him to jolt up and whip out a knife. I tensed up and held out my hands until he found out it was me.
"Sorry, I thought you were a walker," Gavin mumbled. His voice was cracked and raspy. He has been crying.
I sat down next to him and looked at him intently.
"What's wrong, Gav?" I asked him. He shook his head and put his head into his hands.
"It's nothing. Nothing that'd you care about," Gavin muttered. I shook my head and put my hands on his shoulders.
"Gav, just tell me what's bothering you. I promise I'll try to make it better," I told him truthfully.
"You can't make it better. I can't make it better. Nobody can make it better," He told me. I knew what he was talking about then.
"Look, Gav, I'm sorry. I know it's really tough to have your friends and family die. I know, it hurts like hell, but you have to stay strong for the group. They look up to you just as much as they look up to me. And if they see you falling under the weight of the world, then they are too," I told him. Gavin wiped his tears away and looked at me.
"Really?" He asked me. I nodded and gave him a small smile.
"Yes. I believe they look up to you as their second leader. Which means you've gotta help me out," I told him. Gavin smiled back at me and nodded slowly. I pulled him into a tight hug and I wondered if Lindsay could see me now.
I ran my hands down his back and he let out a sigh of relief. I smiled and I was overwhelmed by that wave of lust again. I gulped trying to forget about it, but Gavin being so close in my arms just made me lose it.
I pulled back again and traced his lips with my thumb. He gave me a look of surprise before I pushed my lips against his again. I held him close as I moved my lips. He didn't kiss back for a little while, but eventually gave him and started moving his lips with mine.
I slipped my tongue into his mouth and swirled it around with his. I smiled, not wanting to let go of the passionate moment we were sharing.
I heard a rustling and I quickly pulled away and stood up. Gavin looked at me a bit flustered as I scanned the area. Someone just turned around. I sighed in annoyance and sat back down next to Gavin.
"Why did you do that, Mi-cool?" Gavin asked me. I heard myself sigh and look down.
"I don't know. I really have no idea," I told him. I did have a slight idea. It felt nice the first time and I wanted to do it again.
"Well, if you're just gonna kiss me and not give me a valid reason why, then don't bother too anymore," Gavin told me, a slight aura of anger in his voice.
"Gav, I'm sorry! I really don't know. Maybe it's because I miss Lindsay," I started.
"Yeah, right. Well, I'm not gonna be someone's little fuckboy so forget doing that anymore," He growled at me. He shoved me slightly and I stood up.
I gave him a sad look before he turned over angrily and went to sleep. I sighed and watched him for a moment before kissing his cheek and walking back over to my spot. I curled up on the ground next to Ray and slowly drifted off to sleep.
