Chapter 4: Leaving With a Bang

Chapter 4:

I felt sweat dripping down my forehead. I had successfully cut Gus's hand and wrist off. Now, he was bleeding everywhere, his blood soaking my clothes as I tried to sew him up. Barbara prepared the tourniquet and Gavin still held a firm grip on Gus. His body, though unconscious, was still jerking violently as I poked into his skin with the needle.
Once I had finished, Barbara handed me the tourniquet and I tied it off around his severed wrist. A little blood soaked through, but that was it. I couldn't believe it. He actually didn't die.
Although, he still had a chance of dying. I had no clue how far the infection spread. For all I know, the infection could've spread to the rest of his body already and this entire thing would've been for nothing.
"Gavin, help me carry him back to the group," I told Gavin. He nodded and we lifted Gus up by his arms and slung each arm over our shoulders.
He was pretty heavy, but I figured that was only because he was still unconscious. I noticed Gavin looked pretty pale and sickly. I wondered what would make him look like that. I instantly felt a wave of concern and fear for him.
"Gav, you feeling okay?" I asked him. He looked over at me and I noticed his eyes looked incredibly dull.
"I'm fine," He muttered. I took note that he was defiantly not fine.
Once we got Gus back to the group, his wife fretted over him. Burnie promised he'd watch them and make sure they were alright. Meanwhile, the rest of the group was asking me about my decision to leave. I had barely thought about it and I still had no answer to it.
Suddenly, an idea popped into my mind. A crazy idea but it might work.
"The Rocky Mountains. We'll go there," I told them.
They all looked at me like I was crazy. They started protesting and I noticed some of them giving me glares.
"Guys, just think about it. Once we're there, we'll be safe from any type of walker. They aren't able to make the journey there," I reasoned with them. Some of them still looked doubtful.
"What about Austin?" Someone asked.
"We need to leave the bigger cities. They were more heavily populated and therefore have more walkers," I told them. Most of the group started to realize that I was right and before I knew it, everyone agreed.
I smiled and looked to my side to where Gavin was. He was sort of crouched over. His face was even paler and he had dark and dull eyes still.
Suddenly, Gavin collapsed. I kneeled down next to him quickly and tried to figure out what was wrong with him. I noticed how skinny he was before anything else. I instantly knew what was wrong with him. I've seen this before on someone when I went out looking for supplies.
"Barbara, grab me some food," I ordered her. She quickly scurried off.
I pulled Gavin's head up so it rested in my lap. I pushed away his tangled hair. It was so dirty that I wasn't able to tell what his natural hair color was. He also had quite a big nose. If I had known him before everything that started I probably would've made fun of him for it. And his lips looked so soft and...
Whoa! What the fuck! Lindsay hasn't even been dead for a day and I'm already thinking about others. Wait... That wasn't the biggest part. Gavin is a guy! I can't like guys! The mere thought of me being attracted to a guy was disgusting and horrifying for me.
Gavin stirred slightly in my lap. I lifted his head up a bit so it rested on my chest. He coughed a little as he blinked open his eyes. They still had the defeated, dull look to them. I stroked his head while he regained full consciousness.
"You okay?" I asked him. Gavin sighed and shuddered a little.
"I don't really know anymore," Gavin mumbled.
Barbara returned with food and water. I watched Gavin's expression turn at the sight of the items and he quickly began eating them. I stood next to Barbara, watching him gratefully eat. I felt Barbara lean over to me.
"He acts like he hasn't seen food in days," She whispered to me.
"Probably hasn't. Last time I ate was yesterday morning," I told her. Barbara rolled her eyes and handed me an apple. I smiled and began eating it, finishing around the time Gavin finished.
"Better?" I asked him. He nodded happily and stood up. I was quite surprised at the change of his demeanor. Not seven minutes ago, he was dull and lifeless. Now he was giddy and alert.
"Good. I was wondering if you could watch the group for a little while. Make the announcement that we'll be leaving this afternoon?" I asked him. Gavin's eyes lit up and he nodded.

Ten minutes later, I was armed and heading back out to the streets. First, thing I've gotta do is figure out where that group originated at. If I keep the group out of there way, then we'll have a better chance of surviving.
I climbed on top of a building and looked out at the city below me. I didn't see much other than the occasional walker. I sighed and continued my way along the buildings roof. I didn't feel the need to rush. This was my last moments in the city I had called my home for the past five years.
Suddenly, I saw movements in the street. I ducked down and pulled my pistol off of my belt. I watched the person move with swiftness and persistence. I noticed the advanced equipment on her belt so I figured she was apart of the group.
I walked along the building, trying to figure out a quick and painless way to get down. I sighed and just jumped from the windowsills down to the street.
I landed with a rather loud thump and I ducked behind a concrete slab. I noticed the woman look behind her but continue walking. I smirked and raced across the street, hiding behind the building. I watched her as she walked down the alleyway, towards a door that seemed a little out of place. I watched as she unlocked the door and walked into it swiftly. I heard the door lock again and I walked back down the street.
I was walking down the street, feeling rather pleased with myself. As long as I kept the group away from here, we should be fine.
I suddenly heard the cock of a gun. I felt myself tense up and I spun around and held up my pistol.
A middle aged man stood there. He had bright blonde hair and dark eyes. He held up a pistol as well and pointed it steadily at me. I eyed his gun before returning to his hate filled face.
"What are you doing on our street?" He asked me. I gulped and tightened my grip on my pistol.
"Since when was this your street? Last time I checked, this street was called Pine Street," I told him. He glared at me and squeezed his index finger a little harder on the trigger.
"What's on that belt?" He asked me. As if it wasn't obvious.
"Nothing that could help you," I growled at him.
He squeezed his finger more and the gun went off. I rolled away from the shot and pointed my pistol at his knee. I shot at it, watching as blood began gushing out of the bullet wound. His scream filled up the emptiness of the street and I struggled to get back on my feet. I shot him once more in the arm and sprinted away from him.
I listened to the noises around me carefully. Walkers were coming. They heard that guy scream. I raced into an alleyway and found a ladder to climb up. I reached the roof and continued up there until I reached the street that consisted of the destroyed RT building.
I ran around back and found the group. Gavin looked at me in concern but I just rounded the group up and began leading them away from the city.
