Chapter 2: Meeting The Group
Chapter 2:
The man that I had just saved burst into tears after he shot his companion. I took my pistol back and sat next to him on the roof.
"Hey, I'm sorry that happened. I would've saved him too if I had a chance," I told him.
To be honest, I wouldn't have. I could already tell he was a goner the moment I saw him at the end of the street. He was a little too chubby to be quick and agile. But, this man, he seemed to be athletic enough to be able to survive for a while.
"What's your name?" I asked him. He looked up at me with his crystal blue-green eyes.
"Gavin. What's yours?" He asked me. I sighed and figured I would end up bringing him back to base camp with me.
"Michael. By the way, you're not from around here are you?" I asked him. He shook his head.
"I'm originally from England. I visited Austin when all this went down and I wasn't able to leave," He told me. I nodded and offered him my hand to stand up.
"Sorry to hear that. Now we have to go now before the Walkers swarm again and we get caught in it," I told him. He looked at me in confusion. I tightened my backpack strap around my waist and checked my belt for my knives and pistol. All there.
"I'm taking you back with me to base camp. You'll be safe there. Come on," I told him. I led him across the roof and looked around.
We could travel from roof to roof. At least then we wouldn't need to worry about the Walkers. I climbed up the ladder to the higher roof, motioning for Gavin to keep up.
"If you're coming with me, you've gotta keep up. I like to move fast," I told him. Gavin nodded and I dashed across the roof.
I knew my way around these roofs. I wasn't traveling as fast as I usually would, since I wanted to make sure Gavin could keep up. I was surprised to see him on my heels. I sped up my pace a little and he still kept up pretty well.
I knew that the next roof I'd have to jump across. It was lower than this one but after I jumped, I'd be right across the street from the base camp building.
I sprinted as fast as I could across the roof and launched myself off of it. I tucked and rolled onto the next roof and stood up. I looked back at Gavin and saw him giving me a crazy look.
"Come on! You've gotta jump," I told him. He shook his head.
"I can't jump that far!" He cried out at me. I smirked and thought for a moment.
"Get a running start and then jump. I'll catch you, I promise," I told him. Gavin sighed and he disappeared over the edge of the roof. I waited a few seconds before I heard him running across the roof.
He leaped across the alley. His arms and legs flailing about under him. I held my arms out for him and I caught him when he dropped. I was knocked down by the impact, which him on top of me. I felt a sticky liquid coming out of the palm of my hand and I looked at it.
A long gash ran along my palm. It stung a little, but I had had enough wounds for this one to just feel like a slight tingling.
"Fuck," I muttered. Gavin got off of me and I ripped a part of my t-shirt off and wrapped it around my hand.
"Are you alright?" Gavin asked nervously. I shrugged and led him across the roof.
"I just cut my hand. It's nothing," I told him.
I went down the ladder, making sure there was no Walkers before dashing across the street to the building. Gavin ran right behind me and I quickly pulled out the key that I had to the building. I unlocked it and ushered Gavin inside. I closed the door quickly and locked it again.
"Welcome back, Michael. Did you find anything?" Jack asked me. I nodded and took my backpack off. I handed it over to him, which he took and began sifting through.
"I found an entire bomb shelter filled with supplies. The family must've died or turned early because they were no where to be seen. I wasn't able to smuggle everything so I'll take a group down there tomorrow," I told him. He nodded and praised me, taking the backpack away to the supply room.
"Wait, you search the streets until you find things?" Gavin asked me. I looked back at him and smiled.
"Yeah. The group we have here basically relies on me to bring back supply's. Sometimes I'll go out with a couple more people to bring back more of the supply's," I told him. He nodded and I took him to one of the many rooms we had at the building.
Burnie and Gus's room. Basically the leaders of the group. They have say on who joins our group and who doesn't. They were originally my bosses to an old company they had, but now all the employees look up to them as leaders. To be honest, I think Burnie and Gus looked up to me. They always asked me what cautions we should take and they expected me to be able to feed everyone apart of the group.
I knocked on the door and heard Gus call for me to come in. I opened the door and walked inside, Gavin trailing behind me. Burnie and Gus eyed him suspiciously and I approached them.
"Who's this?" Burnie asked. I smiled and dragged Gavin in front of me.
"This is Gavin. I found him when he was being chased by a swarm of Walkers. His friend wasn't too lucky but I managed to rescue him. He needs a group and I think he could be useful," I told them. Burnie and Gus spoke to each other for a moment before nodding.
"If you think he could be useful, then he can stay," Gus announced. I nodded and led Gavin back out of the room.
"Welcome to RoosterTeeth, Gavin."
It's been two hours since Gavin and I returned. I had helped sort through the supply's and Gavin had been at my side helping. The gash in my hand started bleeding again when I grabbed a box.
I yelped and nearly dropped the box. I set it back down and clutched my hand. The blood had soaked through my makeshift bandage. Blood was dripping down my hand and I watched as it dropped to the floor.
"Hey, Michael, you should get that cleaned out," Jack told me. I nodded and I motioned for Gavin to follow me out.
I went to Lindsay's room. She took over as the 'doctor' of the group. I put pressure on my hand to stop the bleeding and Gavin gave me a worried look.
"Doesn't that hurt?" Gavin asked me. I shrugged.
"I guess it should but I've gotten too many wounds to feel the pain anymore," I told him. Gavin looks at me shocked but stays in step with me.
When I walk into Lindsay's room, she looks up and smiles at me. She gets up and places a kiss on my cheek before motioning me to sit.
"What did you do now, babe?" She asked me. I saw Gavin give me a confused look.
"I cut my hand a little while ago. By the way, this is Gavin, Linds. Gavin, this is Lindsay, my wife," I explained. I saw Lindsay smile as she started examining my hand. She loved it when I addressed her as my wife.
"Oh, okay. I was a little confused," Gavin mumbled. I smiled and nodded.
Lindsay cleaned out my hand and put a fresh bandage over it. She kissed me deeply before allowing me to get up and go.
"Are you on patrol tonight?" Lindsay asked. I thought for a moment and nodded.
"Oh, okay. I'll see you tomorrow then," Lindsay said. I nodded and left the room.
Patrol is what we call guarding the building while everyone else sleeps. I was on patrol two nights ago and they insisted that I do it again. They always liked having me on patrol so I could lead and protect. As I said, most people saw me as a leader higher than Gus and Burnie.
Gavin wanted to be on patrol with me so I told Barbara that she could take the night off instead. I led Gavin to the gun room, where the others who were on patrol were gearing up. We were one of the luckiest groups out there. We had lots of supply's and plenty of guns and ammo. I grabbed an assault rifle and loaded up with extra ammo. I checked my pistols ammo to make sure it was full. I pulled on the darker clothes and waited for the others to finish suiting up.
Once they were finished, they waited for my signal. I nodded and led them out to the top of the roof.
Once we were out there, we took our positions and scanned the city. I pulled down my night vision goggles and scanned the city.
Walkers usually came out and were more active at night. I watched as they made there way out and began wandering around the street. We weren't killing them unless they got dangerously close to the doors. In fact, Walkers weren't what I was looking for. I was looking for other groups. Groups that could break in and steal our supply's and harm our people.
Gavin kept glancing over at me, probably making sure he was doing the right thing. I gave him a smile every time he looked over to reassure him.
It was around one in the morning when I heard a scream. I tensed up and put my finger against the assault rifles trigger. Whoever is was, was in danger. I waited for what seemed like ages before I saw people, actual people. They were plowing through the Walkers with ease with their advanced equipment.
The other guys looked at me expectantly, waiting for an order. I didn't know if these people were okay but they were making a lot of noise. Although, they were drawing every Walker away from the building.
"Hold your fire. Wait," I ordered them. The others remained tense but prepared for an assault.
I waited for the people to get closer. As they approached, the Walkers became fewer and they stopped firing. I watched them gaze up at our building with eager eyes and I instantly knew what they were doing.
"Step away from the building or we will open fire on your asses!" I called down to them. They gazed up at where they were presuming I was.
"Oh yeah? Well, we can do the same," The oldest member said. He pointed his gun and shot a volley up at us.
I instantly ducked behind the wall and watched the others do the same. I looked over at Ray and threw him my pistol.
"Go downstairs and tell everyone to evacuate now!" I yelled at him. He nodded and crawled away from the ledge. He quickly got up and dashed away from us and down the stairs.
"Open fire!" I called to the others. We all leaned over the building and shot over the ledge at the group. They shot right back at us.
They eventually took cover. I knew I had to get down there before they could get the chance to get in.
"Gavin! We're going down. Ryan, you call the orders to the rest of them," I ordered them. Gavin got up and ran after me down the stairs.
Ray had successfully told everyone about the evacuation. The only problem was he set everyone in a panic. I pushed past everyone trying to make it to the first floor.
Burnie and Gus found me and asked me where they were supposed to take everyone. I told them away from here, but keep everyone safe. I told them I'd be out soon and I continued to drag Gavin with me to the front door.
Lots of people were gathered around the supply room, trying to gather as much as they could. I told them to grab stuff and go. That we didn't have enough time and room to take everything.
"The Walkers! They got in!" Someone screamed.
I felt my head begin to pound. Too much was happening. Gavin gave me a panicked look but I just continued to trudge towards the doors.
We finally made it and the people were almost in. I told Gavin to swing the doors open, hide, and then join me.
He swung the doors open and fired at the people in front of me. They were shocked, and they died that way. Gavin shot off the rest of them while I grabbed his hand and led him away.
The Walkers. I almost forgot about them. I saw about twenty standing in between my way and I began picking them off, Gavin following closely behind.
I didn't know what they were so interested in. I hoped it was just a supply someone dropped. My heart dropped when I saw what they were so interested in.
"Lindsay!"
