Chapter 11: Drowning

Chapter 11:

I admired Gavin's sleeping face. He looked so handsome and adorable.
I wished I could get some sleep like the rest of the group. But we were kinda in a dangerous position. I wasn't exactly on board with the fact that we were sleeping out in the open, but the group was tired and we had to stop.
I looked up at the stars and wondered if Lindsay was up there, looking down on me. I hadn't thought about her in so long that I felt almost guilty. She always worried about me, day through night. She would always make sure I was okay before herself. She loved me more than anything. But there was always one thing that I couldn't help but feel guilty about knowing.
She was never going to survive.
I felt Gavin stir a bit in his sleep. His eyes popped open and he gazed up at the stars with me for a moment before resting his eyes on me.
"You okay?" I asked him gently. He stretched and nodded slightly.
"Just a bit of a nightmare. Woke up before the worst happened," He told me. I nodded and stroked his hair gently.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Gavin asked me.
"You don't actually have a penny," I smirked and looked down at him, only to see him holding a copper penny in between his fingertips. I rolled my eyes and took the penny before leaning back on the tree a little more, pulling Gavin up with me.
"Just thinking about Lindsay," I muttered. Gavin nodded, running his fingertips across my tattooed arms.
"What about her?" Gavin asked gently. I couldn't help but wonder if he was jealous.
"Just the things she always used to do. How she'd put me before herself and stuff," I told him. Gavin nodded and took a deep breath.
"If you had to choose between me and Lindsay to save, who would you pick?" Gavin asked quickly.
Now I was almost positive he was jealous.
I tightened my arms around him and kissed his cheek gently.
"You want my honest answer?" I asked him. He nodded and frowned a bit.
"I'd pick Lindsay," I said bluntly.
"Oh. That's alright. She was your wife and stuff," Gavin mumbled. I smiled at him a bit at his not very well hidden jealousy.
"You wanna know why I'd choose her?" I asked him, smirking a bit. Gavin looked like he was fighting tears.
"No, I get it. She was your wife and... You loved her," Gavin croaked.
"Well, I'm gonna tell you anyway," I replied smugly. Gavin took in a shaky breath.
"I'd save her because she'd need to be rescued. You, on the other hand, wouldn't need my help. You'd probably get out just fine on your own, maybe even better without me, depending on the situation," I told him. I saw him blush a little at the compliment and I kissed his cheek again.
"You don't need my help. You're just fine on your own. Hell, if I told you to get out of the group, you'd probably survive longer by yourself than the entire group combined. Now Lindsay, she always had to have a knight in shining armor. She could never defend herself. That's why she died the way she did. She didn't have someone to save her," I told him. Gavin nodded slowly, understanding my point.
"I get it," Gavin said finally. He leaned back against me a little more comfortably and kissed my neck.
"Get some sleep. I can watch over the group," Gavin told me. I smiled at him and rested my head on the tree and let sleep finally take over.

The next day we found a huge field with a giant house standing in the middle. The house had a pond next to it and a forest. We decided to stop there for a little while.
I wondered if I could try going hunting due to the lack of food we had. Ash would be a pretty good helper with that. I knew it would take forever to convince the kids to let me take him but he could end up catching their dinner.
I rounded up Geoff and Jack and told them about my plan of hunting. They both agreed that it would be a good idea and we grabbed guns and prepared to leave.
Gavin came over to me, asking what was going on. I told him of my plan and he smiled and nodded in agreement. When I thought Geoff and Jack weren't looking I gave Gavin a quick kiss on the cheek.
I smiled at him and followed the others to the forest.

"So, Michael, what do you think of Gavin?" Jack asked me.
"What do you mean?" I asked him, confused.
"Like, what do you think of him? Is he helpful? Your friend? More than a friend..." Jack trailed off.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I questioned him, getting slightly panicked.
"Do you like him?" Geoff asked me.
"Well, yeah. As a friend," I told him, trying to play it off as a friendship.
"I didn't know friends kissed each other," Jack muttered. I blushed a deep red and turned away from them.
"I... Um..." I stuttered.
Jack and Geoff laughed and punched me in the arm.
"I never knew you rolled like that Michael," Geoff laughed.
"Neither did I," I muttered, causing them to laugh louder.
I smiled at them, knowing already they would accept me.
Geoff and Jack continued on hunting. By the end of the day we'd found a few squirrels, a rabbit, and a couple birds. It would feed most of the group, so we had actually made pretty good shape.
When we got back, we immediately gave the food to the girls and they started skinning and plucking the various animals, preparing them for dinner.
I turned my back to them and sat down next to Gavin, letting him fuss over me.
"Gavin," I started when he had calmed down. He looked up at me and smiled.
"Geoff and Jack know," I told him.
Gavin looked at me for a moment before blinking and shaking his head.
"How did they react?" He asked nervously.
"They were fine. I kinda had a feeling they would be," I told him. Gavin smiled and nodded, hugging me.
I suddenly heard the girls start yelling. I stood up and scanned the area, seeing David, Barbara's boyfriend, getting yelled at by all the girls.
I tilted my head at them, curious as to what set them off. Gavin grabbed my hand and gripped it, eyeing David as well.
"He's been doing this all day. Tormenting them," Gavin whispered.
"Did you do anything?" I asked back.
"No. They seem to handle it just fine," Gavin told me. I gave him a look before turning my attention back to the girls and David.
Just in time to see David lash a fist out at Barbara.
My instincts instantly kicked in and I let go of Gavin's hand. I dashed down the slope to the girls, where they were trying to hold David back. Meg was holding Barbara while Barbara held her nose that was now pouring blood.
I grabbed David by the shirt and dragged him over to a spot beside the fire. I kicked him twice before he grabbed my foot and hauled me down. He crawled on top of me, lifting his fist before I kneed him in the stomach and shoved him off of me. I flipped over and crouched over him before punching him square in the face.
I did that three times before David decided to fight back again. David shoved me off of him, causing me to stand up and glare at him.
He was faster than I thought he was.
He grabbed my waist and threw me over his shoulder before taking me down to the pond. I kicked, punched, screamed and bite him but nothing seemed to get him to let go.
I heard numerous people try to get him to put me down but he shoved them down before they could get anywhere near him. Gavin even tried but he just ended up falling on his ass trying to shove him down.
Finally, David let go of me.
Not the way I would've preferred though.
He dunked my head into the water, holding it down so I couldn't breath. I held my breath for as long as I could, until my lungs couldn't hold on anymore. I heard numerous people scream for him to let me come up. I kicked my legs trying to get him to let me go.
My lungs ached and I couldn't keep it in anymore. I let my last breath of air go. My kicking stopped and I let the cold water lead me into an endless darkness.
