Chapter 7: Grounded
It was Sunday morning when Emily came home, knowing what was going to happen but as she walked through the front door, she was relieved to find that she wasn't met by her parents or siblings or so she thought.
"Finally decided to come home?" Henry asked.
"Why do you care?" Emily questioned as John and Christine came and stood behind her.
"Because I've been worried sick about you." Christine said, drying a plate from breakfast.
"You told me I could go mum." Emily said.
"Well, it'll be the last time for at least the next month. You're grounded young lady, so I'll need your keys, phone, laptop and you have a curfew change." John said as Emily looked at her father.
"Julie is what started this whole mess!" Emily exclaimed.
"I don't care, you will not talk to your mum the way you did and I know you're upset but I will not have you disrespecting me, your mum or your siblings. So, hand me your phone and bring me your keys and your laptop." He said as Emily stood there like a stone.
"Everything was fine until you came home!" Emily said as she went upstairs.
"That's two more weeks young lady!" Christine said as she heard Emily slam her door.
"God, I think I either live in a nut house or an insane asylum sometimes." Christine said to herself as she walked back into the kitchen to finish the breakfast dishes.
...
Later on that day, Christine was just finishing cleaning the kitchen while John took Henry, Olivia and Molly out for a little while as Emily came downstairs and sat on the barstool in front of her mum.
"Are you done acting like a brat?" Christine asked.
"I wasn't acting like a brat, you always side with dad when his mistake was the reason why you're in this whole predicament." Emily said as Christine sat down.
"Emily, you were acting like a brat and I was doing what was best for your dad and Molly. Sweetheart, I don't like Julie any better than you do but I had to do to keep the peace around us. I know you're mad because Molly is here but I want your dad to be there for her like I'm there for you, Henry and Olivia." Christine said.
"Mum, I know he has to keep Molly but it hurts to see that she's not yours and that you always wanted a baby after me. You and dad tried for years and nothing, then out of the wild blue, Julie knocks on the door and tells you she's pregnant and that her and dad are getting married. That's why I always give her the cold shoulder because she's the one who took dad away from us." Emily said as Christine looked at her youngest daughter.
"Just because Molly isn't mine, doesn't mean I have to love her any less, it's different because it's not the same but I want what's best for you dad and her. Julie is just her self-centered, egotistical self and that will never change and you don't know how many times she gave me the cold shoulder while I was pregnant with all three of you, but sweetheart just because I couldn't have another child, doesn't mean I'll love anyone less that's not apart of me and I already have three ambitious, smart, funny and loving kids who make any mum and dad proud." Christine said.
"Does this not bother you anymore?" Emily questioned.
"Sometimes but I forgave your dad for what he did and I just want what's best for him and for you guys." Christine said.
"So, that's it? Dad's forgiven for the hellacious trauma he put you through?" Emily questioned.
"Honey, people make mistakes and I loved your father for a long time and yes, your father and I talked the other night and he said he was sorry and I can't help that I still love him, I always have and always will." Christine said.
"Sometimes, I wish I could just go back in time and tell dad to not walk out the door." Emily said as Christine hugged her youngest daughter.
"Sweetheart, I wish I could have stopped him from leaving but after I left the band, it was hard on him and the others." Christine said.
"Mum, you were pregnant and he went out and fooled around and with her, of all people." Emily said.
"Honey, most married men and women fool around on their spouses but it's in the past and now, your dad is home and it's just like the old times." Christine said.
"I know that mum, but why would dad fool around on you? I mean, you're way prettier than that fish head he was married to." Emily said, making Christine smile.
"Like you said, I was pregnant and your dad was gone for six months, so he found himself a companion. I didn't really know about it until a year ago that she was pregnant. I still love your dad more than anything, despite the infidelity but a break was good for us both." Christine said.
"You didn't deserve that and we hated seeing you depressed and lonely all the time." Emily said.
"I was never lonely, depressed yes but never lonely." Christine said.
"Mum, you went to a therapist to try to get some stability after you quit the band and you were pregnant with Olivia then." Emily said.
"I got pregnant with you after my success of 'In The Meantime'." Christine said.
"I know mum, I've heard the story." Emily said.
"Were all three of were conceived after something good happened to you and dad?" Emily asked.
"Yes, because Henry was conceived after an awards show, Olivia was conceived after we got inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and you were conceived after 'In The Meantime' was a success." Christine said.
"How lucky we were." Emily said, rolling her eyes.
"That just meant that you were all conceived after something great happened." Christine said.
"I know it's hard to adjust baby, but give it a chance and it will all prevail." Christine said as she took her hands into hers.
"Sometimes I wish Aunt Stevie had kids, that way I could at least have a friend." Emily said.
"Well honey, your Aunt Stevie and I had different ideas of how we wanted to map out our lives." Christine said.
"It would have been a lot easier if you both had the same dreams." Emily said.
"Her dreams were way different than mine. I had my fair share of the spotlight and bright lights of the media." Christine said.
"The last appearance you did was when you were at iHeartRadio awards together. You and dad weren't even standing next to each other." Emily said.
"I know but we did talk afterwards." Christine said.
"The only thing I'm afraid of is, what if dad hurts you again? Mum, we don't want you going through that again." Emily said.
"Sweetheart, your dad won't leave again and you will never have to worry about that ever again." Christine said, hugging her.
"Promise?" Emily asked.
"I promise." Christine said as she kissed the top of Emily's head.
...
Later on that day, John and the kids came home as he started preparing for dinner while Christine sat at the island, just watching him.
"I got the ingredients to make salmon patties." John said.
"That's fine but your cleaning the kitchen afterwards." Christine said.
"Deal." John said as he leaned in to kiss her.
"How was your day out with the kids?" She asked.
"Great. How was your day with Emily?" He asked.
"Fine as always." She said.
"Chrissy, she didn't ask to get ungrounded, did she?" He asked.
"No Johnny, she didn't but we had a great day otherwise." She said.
"She needs to learn a lesson from this." He said, opening the cans of salmon to drain the water as Christine got up to open the door.
"I know but she's also a teenager John and she needed to get that off her chest." She said.
"What she said was unacceptable towards you and I will not tolerate that." He said, pouring the salmon into a bowl to get the bones out.
"I forgot how bad that smelled." She said, referring to the salmon.
"You used to love these." He said.
"Yeah, until we had children and then, my senses got messed up in the process. So did my back, my bladder and everything else, I mean I can't even laugh or cough without almost peeing myself." She said as John smiled.
"That reminds me of a time when we were on the boat and we took that boating trip when you were pregnant with Emily." John said as Christine knew that memory so we'll, the last time she was so happy way before the affair happened.
"I remember, I was huge and the kids asked me if I was pregnant with a seahorse because we showed them the sonogram and Olivia said Emily looked like a seahorse while Henry said I looked like I had ate a watermelon." Christine said, smiling at the memory.
"Well, all I remember is your blue bikini." He said, it was engrained in his brain.
"Even though I was seven months pregnant, I could still wear a bikini and I still can." She said.
"Oh, I know." He said.
"I was thinking about our wedding and what if we got married in Hawaii, on the beach instead of a church or a courthouse." Christine said.
"I love that idea." He said.
"Then, that's what I want. A Hawaiian wedding with our friends and kids there and after, a reception at our beach house and then, we go far, far away from everyone on your boat." Christine said.
"We'll do exactly that then." He said.
"Speaking of which, we need to tell everyone we're getting married again since only the kids know." Christine said.
"Then, we'll call a meeting and tell them." John said, referring to Mick, Jenny, Lindsey, Stevie, Neil and Mike.
"Sounds good." Christine said.
...
They ate dinner as Christine's head laid on John's chest, while they watched TV.
"Honey?" John questioned.
"Hmm?" She looked at the TV.
"This is nice." He said.
"Well, we have kids on both ends of our walls and a baby in the room, so we can't do anything else." She said.
"It's just nice being able to lay here with the love of my life and watch TV, even if it's a show I've already seen." He said.
"We're watching 'One Life To Live' darling, you used to binge watch these with me on our days off." She said.
"Precisely." He said as she looked up at him and gave him a kiss.
"I used to watch all the soap operas with Stevie and have a glass of whatever we had in our rooms." She said.
"And to think you two wouldn't of ended up together as close as you were back then." He said.
"I was married to you, people used to bug us, knocking on her door to come in her room and talk about whatever it is and I'd come find you to make me feel better because you never excluded me for anything, made me feel like I wasn't invisible." She said.
"Don't start on what you cannot finish." He said.
"What are you talking about?" She asked, laughing.
"Every time, people would come to her room, you used to come find me and have your way with me." He said.
"You did too. Say, remember our anniversary on the 'Shake The Cage' tour?" Christine asked.
"Yeah, I remember very well." He said.
"You totally started it." She said.
"Hey, you can't blame me for the way you kept on shimming behind the keyboard." He said.
"There was nothing special about it." She said.
"But, I loved every minute of it." He said.
"I know you did." She said, kissing him.
They turned off the TV and his bedside lamp, checking on Molly to make sure she was fine before they both drifted off to sleep.
