Chapter 5: I Wish
It was surprisingly quiet throughout the house until the sound of a knock in the living room rang out and it being in the middle of the night woke John and Christine out of their sleep, rushing to the door as John told Christine to stay behind him, it was not the kind of thing to just drop by in the middle of the night but what choice was there.
John was really surprised to see ex wife standing there, holding his youngest daughter wife a dissatisfied look on her face.
"Julie, what are you doing here in the middle of the night?" John asked.
"You both got what you wanted." Julie said.
"I waited and waited by the phone for the call and stop giving Christine the look from hell. This is not her fault and quit blaming her for all the stupid shit you did." John said.
"I'm just here to tell you got what you wanted, so I hope you're happy." Julie said.
"I'm going to let you two talk." Christine said.
"No Christine, don't leave. This concerns you too." John said, not wanting to be alone in the room with his ex wife.
"Okay." Christine said, sitting down beside John.
"I have to get going but I hope she remembers what it's like to take care of an infant." Julie said, getting up.
"I knew you'd pull something like this and I'm happy that Molly is coming to live with us. I love having all four of my children under one roof and as for you for saying that Christine is a bad mother, she's the best mother to all four of my kids, considering you just drop by in the middle of the night without so much of as a call." John said.
"One day, Molly will see who's going to be there for her and it will be me. Christine is not her mother and never will be, it's just by law that Molly has to live with you." Julie said.
Christine sat there listening to both of them, not knowing if she needed to speak up or go knock his ex wife upside the head for bringing an innocent baby into this.
"Molly might not be Christine's child but she'll be there for her through everything." John said.
"Whatever you say." Julie said.
"John?" Christine questioned.
"Here sweetheart, can you take Molly inside, please?" John said as he placed his sleeping daughter into Christine's awaiting arms as she carried her into the house, avoiding the stare from Julie.
"We love you Molly and welcome home darling." Christine said as Henry, Olivia and Emily came downstairs, staring at baby in their mother's arms.
"What happened, is everything okay?" Olivia asked.
"Yes, everything's fine." Christine said.
"Mum, what is she doing here?" Emily asked as John came back in with Julie right behind him.
"Dad, what are they doing here?" Olivia asked.
"Come and sit down." John said as they did.
"What's going on?" Henry asked.
"Your father was rewarded full custody of Molly and now, she's here to live with you." Julie said.
"You know you two were the reason why my parents broke up and then, you up and bring her here to hurt my mum all over again." Henry said.
"Henry, it's okay." Christine said.
"No mum, it's not okay. Those two were the reason why our family fell apart and now, she wants to bring that baby into this house just to hurt you!" Henry said, crying.
"I've had a lot of time to think about this and now, I'm fine with Molly coming to live with us." Christine said as her kids looked at her.
"Mum no!" All three of them said in unison.
"I don't mind it." Christine said, holding Molly close as if she we're her mother, not Julie.
"Mum, please be rational here. You can't possibly be onboard with this?" Emily asked.
"I'm leaving." Julie said as she kissed her daughter's head as she grabbed her purse and coat.
"Good, I'm glad you did. You overstayed your welcome." Henry said as Julie walked out the front door, got in her car and left.
"Listen, Molly needs me right now and I can do this. Henry and Olivia, you are grown with your own lives and Emily, you're almost grown and you have school, work and your friends. This was coming sooner or later. I have looked past your father's infidelity and what happened but this little angel needs us and it wasn't all her fault, she was the innocent one in this all." Christine said.
"I still say this is a bad idea." Olivia said.
"She's apart of your lives whether you like it or not. Now, I'm going to make her a bottle and we still have that bassinet from when your cousin's child was here, so she'll sleep in that until we can get a crib and fix her up a room." Christine said as she got up to go fix Molly a bottle as the kids looked at each other, thinking their mother had lost her mind.
John sat there with Molly in his arms as she slowly opened her eyes, she started sucking on her hand as Christine came back from making her a bottle, bringing the nipple to her mouth as the baby took it with no fuss at all.
The kids went back to their rooms as they hated this new arrangement.
"She looks like you Johnny." Christine said.
"You're just saying that." John said as he helped Christine support the bottle because Molly couldn't grasp the bottle.
"No, I'm not. She has your eyes, your smile and your nose." Christine said.
"I know this isn't what you wanted but I'll make it up you." John said as Christine looked at him.
"John, I have no choice in the matter. Molly is your daughter and I have learned to accept this, I wish that sometimes would have never happened, but it did and she's apart of you. I love this little angel now like she's mine too." Christine said.
"I just hope the kids will accept it because they were upset earlier." John said.
"They will. Just give them some time, they're still adjusting to you being home again too and now, we have her." Christine said as Molly got done eating as John lifted her up to burp her on his shoulder.
"I wish Molly could be just ours, me and you." John said to Christine, holding her head down.
"I wish that too but John, after Emily was born, we were told that having another child was not a good idea and after that, our marriage was hanging on by a thread and was not in a good place and now, I see why you were attracted to Julie and you both conceived a beautiful little girl." Christine said.
"We never really talked about this and I'm so sorry if I made you feel unloved and that I never thought of how you felt." He said.
"It's just... When I gave birth to Emily, I was so conscious of what I looked like because I looked in the mirror and seen what I didn't want to see. I gained weight that I could never lose and it stuck with me. When the doctor told me that having another child would be a bad idea, my world closed all around me and I wanted to give us the family we talked about, hoped and dreamed of." Christine said.
"I thought you were perfect in every single way, before and after our children were born and I never knew you felt that way, but I'm never going anywhere ever again. We can talk about anything and everything, you will always be the most beautiful woman in my eyes." John said, kissing her cheek.
"Thank you but I'm definitely going to have to get a trainer because we're hitting the road again before long." Christine said.
"You're welcome, but enough of you saying that you're not beautiful because to me you are and we have a long day tomorrow." John said as he carried Molly in his arms, up the stairs with Christine close behind him.
"We will but let's go set up her bassinet and go to bed." She said, yawning.
They set up the bassinet beside their bed and got into their bed after they sung Molly a couple of lullabies.
"Good night darling." Christine said.
"Good night sweetheart." He said as he kissed her cheek, necks and lips.
They drifted off to sleep and wondered what tomorrow would be like.
