Say What You Need To Say While You Can...

"You're so mean and unfair! I hate you and I never want to see you again!" Jenna shouts, slamming the door behind her. She gets in her friend's car and they head to school.

"Jen, is everything okay?" asks her friend, Carly.

"No!" huffs Jenna. "My mom and I just got in a huge fight because she won't let me go to the concert tomorrow night! Ugh, she's so unfair!"

"Oh, okay." Carly nods. "Well, maybe she has something else planned. That might be why she doesn't want you to go."

"I don't know. I think she's just being mean. Ugh. Let's just change the subject."

"Okay. Fine." Carly begins to think. "Umm...oh. When are you finally going to tell Ryan how you feel?" asks Carly with a slight grin.

Jenna shrugs her shoulders. "I don't know. Probably never."

"What?! Never?! Why not?" asks Carly.

Jenna frowns. "Because I'm scared."

"Scared? Why are you scared? You two are best friends."

"I know. That's why I'm scared. I don't want to ruin our friendship."

Carly parks the car and grabs her books. "Jenna, you and Ryan have been best friends ever since I've known you two. You wouldn't ruin y'all's friendship just by telling him how you truly feel. You have to tell him."

Jenna gets out of the car and follows Carly into the school. "Okay, Carly. I guess I'll try to tell him soon."

"Great. Now let's get to class."

"Yes, ma'am," giggles Jenna, following Carly into History class.

A few classes later, Jenna separates from Carly and walks into Chemistry class, where she sits beside her best friend Ryan. He greets her with a hug. "Hey, Jenny." Jenna glares at him and playfully punches his arm. "What was that for?" he chuckles.

Jenna grins. "I told you I don't like that name. My name is Jenna, not Jenny."

"Okay. You're right. I'm sorry..., Jenny," laughs Ryan. Jenna just glares at him and busts out laughing.

Soon, their laughter is interrupted by a horrifying sound,...a gunshot. Everyone jumps; then another shot follows right after, causing everyone to freak out. The teacher immediately closes the doors, locks them, and barricades them with desks. Then he tells the students to hide and he shuts off the lights.
Jenna hides in the corner with Ryan and immediately pulls out her phone to contact her mom. She tries to call her mom, but she doesn't answer.  She can't leave a voicemail, because her mom's voicemail box is full. So, she gets really upset and starts sobbing. "No. No. This can't be it. I don't want to die. I can't die. I still have so much I need to say."

Ryan tries to calm her. "Shh, calm down, Jenna. It'll be okay. You're not going to die. We're going to be okay."

"No, Ryan, you don't understand. Before I left for school this morning, I got in a huge fight with my mom and I...I told her that I hated her and I never wanted to see her again. That can't be the last thing I ever say to her. I don't even know why I said it. I was just angry and stupid."

"It's going to be okay, Jenna. We're going to get out of here. You will get to see your mom again."

"I don't know if I will or not, so...." Jenna pulls out her phone, points the camera towards herself, and starts recording. She whispers, "Mama, I'm so sorry about this morning. I didn't mean anything I said. I was just...mad and stupid. I didn't mean any of it. Thank you for everything that you've ever done for me. I love you, Mama." She stops recording and sends the video to her mom along with a message telling her that the school is on lockdown because of an active shooter. Then she bursts into even more tears. "I'm scared, Ryan. I've never been this scared in my whole life. I don't want to die."

Ryan holds her close. "I know, Jenna. I'm scared too, but I've got you. I promise I'm not going to let anything happen to you."

A few seconds later, another gunshot is heard closer, causing Jenna to have a panic attack. She starts hyperventilating and crying even more. "This is it. I...I'm never going to...get...to see...my mom...again. I...I just w...wanted to h...hug her one last time. Now...that'll never hap...pen."

"Shh. Jenna, it's going to be okay. Shh. You have to calm down." Ryan continuously tries to calm her down and stop her panic attack, but it just gets worse. Finally, he kisses her in hopes of calming her.

It works. Then Jenna looks at him in complete shock. "You...you just...kissed me. Why?"

"Well, I thought since this might be our final moment together, I should say what I've needed and wanted to say to you for years." He holds her hands and looks deeply into her eyes. "I love you, Jenna. I've loved you since the day I first saw you."

She kisses him. "Ryan, I've wanted to tell you that for so long. I was just scared that if I told you how I truly feel, it would ruin our friendship."

Ryan halfway smiles. "Jenna, if this is our last few moments on Earth, I'm so glad I get to spend them with you."

"Me too, Ryan." She lays her head on his shoulder and he pulls her into his chest, not letting her go.

About thirty minutes later, the shooter is captured; and everyone is free to leave. Both Jenna and Ryan immediately let out a sigh of relief. Then they stand up; and Jenna hugs Ryan for at least five minutes so relieved that they're still alive. Afterward, Ryan walks her out of the school to the parking lot, holding her close the whole time.
As soon as they reach the parking lot, Jenna sees her mom and immediately runs to her. They throw their arms around each other, holding each other tight and not letting go for a while.
Finally, Jenna whimpers through tears, "I'm so sorry, Mama. I didn't mean anything I said this morning. I was just being a mean little brat. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean anything I said. I don't hate you. I love you and the thought of never seeing you again, hugging you, and talking to you absolutely killed me. Today definitely taught me one thing. I should always say what I need to say while I still can because I never know when my last moment will be. I love you, Mama."

Her mom hugs her tight. "I love you too, baby. I'm so glad that the good Lord took care of you and your classmates today and that no one was killed."
