12. Down Memory Lane

Chapter Twelve

        Down Memory Lane

“Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor."

When you lose someone, every candle and every pray, doesn't make up for the fact that there is a hole in your heart where that someone use to be. And a rock. Losing a parent, a mother or a father, is like losing a part of yourself. You never realize you miss them until there six feet under ground and for a moment, you think life will end with sorrow in your heart. People question why bad things happen to good people, why they deserve pain.

But then again, the heart was made to be broken.

"Sweetheart, break feast is ready!" Shay's mother called from downstairs. Shay stood in front of her full length mirror, examining her outfit and her hair. Her wavy blonde hair was in a ponytail and her outfit was simple for the first day of freshman year; a black tank-top with a dark blue plaid shirt and jeans. The first day of high school was always hard for everyone but Shay had this nervous feeling in the pit of her stomach.

She walked down the stairs and saw her beautiful mother, placing pancakes onto plates around the table. Her mother looked up and smiled brightly once she saw Shay.

"Hey honey." Shay's mother welcomed, "I've made pancakes and scrambled eggs, you want some?"

Shay walked over to her mother but shook her head, "No thanks. My stomach is already feeling sick, don't need food making it even worse."

Her mother laughed, "Is Stiles picking you up?"

"Yeah, along with Scott who was able to hitch a ride with him."

Shailene's mother looked up and shook her head, jokingly, "I still cannot believe that the Sheriff let him buy that crap piece of blue jeep. Seriously, that thing was older than my grandmother."

Shay shrugged, "It's the one that Stiles wanted and it was cheap, like really cheap."

A loud honk was heard from outside, indicating that Stiles was outside and waiting for Shay to get outside. She smiled, "That's my ride."

Her mother stood closer to Shay and cupped her daughter's face, giving a kiss on the cheek before reeling back her head and looking at Shay, "I love you sweetheart."

        "I love you too."

The bus rumbled as it drove over the bumps in the road but inside the bus, it was silent. The whole cross country team was in the bus; Isaac and Boyd up in front sharing whispers, an anxious Ethan with Danny, and Shay, sitting in between Stiles and Scott, thinking of her deceased parents. Scott was leaning helpless against the window, weak and pale from sickness. Stiles was sitting on the outside end with an IPad in his hands, scrolling through something.

A spiral notebook was opened and lied out on Shay's lap, a black bell point pen in Shay's right hand. A bunch of words, sentences, and symbols were all scribbled onto the paper. The number seven was written randomly on the paper and each deadly sin was on it as well. Pride, wrath, greed, sloth, lust, envy, and gluttony. Ever since Shay saw the raven, her mind has been wondering how the seven wonders involve the seven sins.

"To be honest, this could mean two things." Deaton said as he lied the journal on the metal table and turned his attention back to Shay. After Shay read her mother's journal entry and saw the raven in the bedroom window, she rushed to Deaton with the journal.

Shay quirked her eyebrow, "What two reasons could those be?"

"Well, it says here that your mother thought that maybe a wonder was given down to her and that seeing a raven, an omen, was a sign of her having divination." Deaton explained, "Or your mother never had a wonder and seeing the raven was just a coincidence."

"Or she had a wonder, saw the omen, and knew she was going to die." Shay whispered, looking down at the paper.

Deaton looked at the girl with pity, "That very well may be the answer. But listen here. "He said before placing a hand on her shoulder, "Your mother loved you, not even a raven or death would change that."

Shay nodded before clearing her throat and blinked away the tears that had appeared in her eyes, "I saw the raven, does that mean something is gonna happen?"

"Maybe. Just because you saw the omen doesn't necessarily mean you will die, but maybe..."

"Someone else will." Shay finished before tapping her finger on the metal table, "Maybe, maybe an event will happen that might cause death. So the raven coming to me was like a..."

"A warning." Deaton confidently answered, "Anything else that you wanted to talk to me about?"

"Yeah, there was. Are there any other omens that I should be aware of?"

Deaton's face covered in concentration before answering, "Well, there's a serpent which ties to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth."

        "Rebirth? As in reincarnation?"

"Maybe not physically being reborn but becoming a new person."

"Deaton, how do wonders relate to the deadly sins?"

"A sin is an act against God. The seven deadly sins are the seven main sins that people have that show fallen humanity. The use of a wonder is pure humanity." Deaton explained slowly.

"A person who uses the wonders for good has the seven wonders and a person who uses the seven wonders for evil has the seven deadly sins. Why deadly?"

"Because using a sin could kill you or someone else."

"Incongruous." Shay heard Stiles say as she lied her head on Stiles' shoulder. Shay felt extremely tired since she stayed up all night, reading her mother's journals and books. It was like an insight on her mother, reading things that she never knew about her mother.

"Um, can you use it in a sentence?" Scott asked, his voice weak and frail.

Stiles nodded, "Yes. Yes, I can. It's completely incongruous that we're sitting on a bus right now, on our way to some stupid cross-country meet after what just happened... incongruous."

"Out of place. Ridiculous, absurd." Scott answered easily.

"Perfect. Okay, next word. Um, Darach. Darach, it's a noun. We have to talk about it sometime, okay? And we're gonna be stuck in this thing for, like, five hours, so why not?" Stiles questioned but Scott stayed silent causing Stiles to huff in annoyance, "Next word... Intransigent."

        "Stubborn, obstinate."

Before Stiles or anyone could say anything else, the bus drove over a large bump and everyone jumped from their seats. Scott groaned out of pain and Stiles looked at him, worried, "Oh, buddy, you okay? We shouldn't have come. I knew it. We shouldn't have come."

"There's safety in numbers." Scott defended.

"Yeah, well, there's also death in numbers, okay? It's called a massacre... or bloodbath, carnage, slaughter, butchery, wow, that's... " Stiles mumbled until Scott groaned again.

Stiles started to get frustrated, "All right, Scott, I'm telling coach that..."

"No, no, no, no. I'm alright."

"Well, you don't look all right. Would you just let me see it?" Stiles incisively asked.

        "I'm okay."

"Just let me see it okay."

"Okay." Scott huffed. He awkwardly tried to sit up and he lifted up his shirt. Shay's eyes opened to look at Scott's chest. Two long and deep claw marks went across his chest with bloody splatters across his skin. Her eyes widened as she gaped at the wound.

"Oh, dude." Shay whispered under her breath.

"I know it's bad, but it's because they're from an Alpha. It'll take longer to heal." Scott pathetically attempted to reassure Stiles and Shay.

Stiles' face hardened, "How come Boyd and Isaac are fine then?"

Scott stayed silent, not knowing how or what to say. Stiles huffed before returning back to his IPad, realizing he was getting no answers from Scott. Scott, on the other hand, was becoming more sick by the minute and being on this bus wasn't helping him.

To break the dreadful silence, Shay spoke, ""Alright, I'm gonna take a nap, if you wake me up I will verbally slap both of you in the face"

Shay placed her head back onto Stiles' shoulder, her body slouched and leaned onto him. Stiles didn't seem to mind, much to Shay's pleasure. Her eye lids dropped as her whole body relaxed and she started to take a dreamily trip down memory lane.

Shay lied on her bed, flat on her stomach, with a book opened in her hands and "The Beatles" singing into her ears. It was late at night and her aunt Jenna was still at the hospital, wouldn't be home until 1 am. It was the day before high school started again which made the night even more dreadful. Her little jam session was interrupted by a loud bang. Shay quickly sat up and took out her earplugs, turning off her IPod as well.

The wooden floor creaked as Shay walked slowly to her bedroom door. She opened the door wide opened and stuck her head out, "Jenna, you home early?" She called out but no one answered. Another loud bang was heard again, confirming it was coming from outside. Hesitantly, she walked down the stairs before stopping in front of the front door.

Shailene swung the door open but the only sound was crickets. She stepped out onto her porch and walked around slowly. Her body jumped back when she heard rustling coming from the bushes on her left side. As Shay walked closer, someone jumped out from behind. Quickly, Shay let out a sequel and whipped her arm back, hitting the person right in the face. Without getting a good look at the predator, Shay turned around and bent her leg back, ready to kick him.

"Wait, wait, wait, Shay stops, it's me!" The person cried out in pain. Immediately, Shay recognized the voice as her best friend Stiles. He was awkwardly leaning against the house wall, his face twisted with pain and discomfort.

Shay bent down towards him, "Stiles! What the hell are you doing here?"

Stiles clumsy got up, quickly recovery from Shay's assault. He shrugged, "I wanted to see you."

"In the middle of the night?" The blonde questioned.

"I told you she would hit you." A voice said from behind. Shay looked behind her shoulder to Scott, her other best friend. He walked up the driveway and onto the porch, his face amused that he just witnessed Stiles get his ass handed to him by a teenage girl.

Shay pulled her cardigan closer to her body before crossing her arms, "What the hell are you two idiots doing here?"

"Stiles, tell her. This was your stupid idea in the first place." Scott grumbled.

"What idea that Stiles, oh so creatively, came up with?" Shay asked sarcastically.

Stiles jumped up slightly, joyful, "I was listening in on the police radio and they found a dead body out in the woods."

"Is that really something to be happy about?" She asked.

Once again, Stiles ignored her comment, "But that's not the best part. They only found half of the women's body."

        "That's unfortunate."

"We're going." Stiles announced but once the words left his mouth, Shay immediately started to shake her head, "No, no, no we are not."

        Stiles frowned, "Why not?"

Shay flayed her arms around, "Because! First off, tomorrow is the first day of sophomore year and second off, why the hell would I want to go searching through the woods for a dead body?"

"Please." Stiles pouted and no matter how hard Shailene tried, she couldn't deny that puppy dog face.

"Fine." Shay groaned as Stiles's face bright up like a Christmas tree.

"This is going to be awesome." Stiles cheered as he made his way towards his jeep, Scott and Shay silently following behind. This was going to be an interesting night.

I know that this chapter was more of a filler than an actual episode but I am in no mood to write. Yesterday, I had to go through a two-hour root canal for my molar on the right side and I am in so much pain it is unbelievable. Damn doctors didn't give me any pain killers :(

I have a new story out called "Masquerade" and it is a cross-over between Teen Wolf and The Vampire Diaries. It is in the POV of Katherine Pierce (my bae) and please check it out.
