Chapter 4.
I soon arrived at the library. Yuki-chan was waiting outside for me.
"Hi Yuki-chan!"
"Hi Yui-chan! Come on, let's go inside. I want to hear all about the book club! And who's this Akasuki-san? Is she gonna steal my role as your best friend?"
I laugh. "No, no, of course not! She's just another friend, not a best friend."
Yuki-chan laughs too. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Anyways, want to go grab some hot chocolate? The bakery down the street announced that they're going to sell hot chocolate from now all the way until New Year's! Then we can come back and hang out in the library."
"So that's the real reason you offered to come to the library..." I say, rolling my eyes. "But yeah, let's go! Hot chocolate sounds great right now."
We walked to the bakery, got some hot chocolate, and sat down. While we drank our hot chocolate, Yuki-chan asked me questions about the club. I just wanted to finish my hot chocolate quickly so that we could go to the library. Unfortunately, Yuki-chan is taking hours to finish her hot chocolate. By the time we get to the library, it's already eight o'clock.
We go and sit at one of the desks in the library. Yuki-chan and I do this all the time. She doesn't like to read very much, but sometimes, at least once a week, she comes with me to the library and reads with me. In exchange, I go "exploring" with her in the woods behind her house, which basically means we run around the woods, playing make-believe, and sometimes sword fight with sticks. I know, it's childish, but it actually is a lot of fun.
"Oh, Yuki-chan, I forgot my book. I'm going to go look for one to read." I say.
"Okay."
I walk over to the shelves and look at all the books until I find a manga that looks interesting. I think it's one of the mangas that were mentioned in the book club today. I take it off the shelf and open to the first page to read the summary. As I do, a piece of paper flutters to the ground. A bookmark? I pick it up. It doesn't look like a bookmark. There's someone's handwriting on it. Out of curiosity, I read it.
If you are not the girl I saved years ago, the one who's phone was run over in the middle of the road, then please place this note back in the manga you found it in.
A girl this person saved years ago, who's phone was run over in the middle of the road? Could it be...?
If you are the girl, then continue reading.
I didn't know if I was the girl or not, but I was curious, so I continued reading.
I never did get your name. But I think I know it now. If I am correct, I will know tomorrow.
Tomorrow, announce to the entire club the title of the book you picked up. I will then know I was correct that it is you. After that, I promise, by the end of the year, you will know the name of the boy who saved you. Until then, I have a competition for you.
Find out who I am before I graduate.
What the heck is this?! It sounds way too similar to my situation... could it be that the person who saved me is someone in the book club? If that was true, then maybe I can find them...
But what's this about a competition? He wants me to find out who he is before he graduates? It's certainly possible, but it's not like I have a lot of clues to go off of. I mean, yes, I know he's a boy, and I know that he's probably in the book club. He definitely goes to our school, too. But I don't know anything else. Yeah, there aren't that many boys in the book club, but I'm not just going to go around asking, "Hey, are you the boy that saved my life a couple years ago?" That would just be awkward...
I heard Yuki-chan walk over and quickly shoved the note into my pocket. I don't know why I felt like I should hide it from her, but I did anyways.
"Did you find a book yet, Yui-chan?" Yuki-chan asks.
I look at the book in my hands, then nod. "Yep! Let's go sit down."
We go sit down and read together. This manga is pretty cool, though I can't focus on it. I can't stop thinking about the note. My mind wanders, eventually trying to narrow down who the boy that saved me could be. I narrowed it down to Hara-san, Murakami-san, Hasegawa-san, and Ishikawa-san. I didn't really think it was Ishikawa-san, since I was pretty sure the boy that saved me was older than me. But I wasn't one hundred percent sure, so I couldn't completely rule him out.
"Are you okay, Yui-chan? You've been on that same page for ten minutes now." Yuki-chan says, giving me a worried look.
I glance up, a little surprised. "Oh! Yeah, I'm fine. I was just... thinking."
"About what? Ooh, were you thinking about a boy you like?" Yuki-chan asks.
I blush. "W-what? No! Of course not!"
"Tell me tell me who!"
"No one! I promise, I'm not thinking about..." I trail off, realising that I actually was thinking about a boy. But it's not like I like him! I don't even know who he is!
"Oh my gosh, so you were thinking about a boy! Yui-chan, this is so exciting! You have to tell me his name, at least!"
I sigh. "I... I don't know his name."
"Aww, Yui-chan, you have a crush on a boy and you don't even know his name? That's no fun, how am I supposed to tease you if I don't have a name to go off of?" Yuki-chan says, pouting.
"Well then just don't tease me!" I say.
Yuki-chan sighs. "Fine. But when you find out his name, I have to be the first to know!"
"Okay! Okay! You'll be the first!"
"Okay! Good!"
After that, we continue to read. I try to push the note out of my mind and try to focus on reading. A few times, my mind wanders back to the note, but I continue to flip the page anyways.
A few hours later, we decide to get home. It was getting pretty late and we had school tomorrow, so I wanted to get some rest. By the time I got home, it was almost midnight. I read some more and then eventually went to sleep.
