1. The family
"The strongest actions for a person is to love themself, be themself and shine amongst those who never believe they could"
---
On the same day, forty-three infants were born to random unconnected woman who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Eight are adopted by a man name Reginald who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his 'children' to save the world.
Now the siblings reunite upon the news of their father's passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.
----
On the first day of October 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual in the fact that none of these woman had been pregnant when the day first began.
The eccentric billionaire and adventurer Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted as many of the children as possible. He ended up getting eight of them and trained them into saving the world, called them The Umbrella Academy.
The Umbrella Academy was one of the finest crime fighting forces in the city and they became famous. Always on covers on magazines.
Madison Hargreeves or Maddie as people call her, except her dad who calls her number Eight. She was one of those babies that was bought by Reginald when they were only days old.
Maddie is a member of The Umbrella Academy which is a team of crime-fighters who is wearing domino masks when they were on missions.
She is not proud of being one of the members. The Umbrella Academy was her family but never home. Home makes you feel safe, but in that place, Maddie never felt that.
Her adopted dad never took care of her and her siblings or loved them. Instead of raising them as a single father, giving them a loving and caring home, he created an Academy.
Maddie will say that he adopted them yeah, give them roof over their heads and food on the table, but instead of treating them as his children, he treated them like they were lab rats on his little experiment. He only had them because of their abilities.
Maddie never deemed Reginald their father. He was a cold and selfish, rigid and bold but most importantly, he never showed them love. His caring towards them could be described as training them, but it never felt as if he wanted what was best for them.
Each of the siblings have abilities. Abilities that young children dream of when they watch the superhero movies.
Some would say they're lucky, they have a gift that most people would kill for. But Maddie didn't feel lucky and neither did her siblings, from the day they learned how to walk, they were trained to be crime stopping heroes. Saving the day like any other superhero, how much Maddie hated those days and the ones that came after them.
They all lived in a huge Academy, Maddie hated living in that big Academy but she was glad she wasn't alone, she lived with her siblings or her adopted siblings, since none of them is related by blood. But they see each other as family, and Maddie would not call her family normal, she would call them a dysfunctional family cause that was what they were.
A super dysfunctional family.
But Reginald was not a nice dad, he never took care of Maddie and her siblings or loved them. They were taking care of by a robot woman who they called mom.
Reginald emotionally abused the siblings. He would make them train against each other from six a.m. to noon. At noon, they got thirty minute lunch break. After that, it was training again until dinner time. He used to put these sticky things on their temples when they were sleeping. Put up small camera at their beds too, and he monitored them when they were asleep
At the age of 13, all the kids got the Academy's log tattooed on their left wrist. It was a black umbrella in a circle. It was like he branded them.
Maddie and her siblings called each other by the names they were giving by their robot mother, Grace, but their dad called them by the numbers he gave them.
Numbers were given to them insted of names.
The numbers the children were assigned determine an unspoken rank, with One being the best and eight the least desirable.
Number One: Luther Hargreeves, Spaceboy, his abilities is super strength. He is kinda like superman, but aim much lower. He is more dumber, plus he is a daddy's boy. Maddie was never closed with Luther, she always wanted to beat the shit out of him. She think he was so annoying because he always act like the leader of the family. She didn't necessarily hate him, but neither did she have a fondness for his personality. As kids, they were never close, but then again, no one was with him because of his undying love for Number three , Allison.
Luther was groomed by his father from an early age to be the leader of The Umbrella Academy, a responsibility that has always weighed heavily on him. He is resilient, a workaholic and possesses the ability of heightened physical strength. Upstanding to a fault, Luther always tries to do the right thing, even if that means putting others before himself.
Luther's titled as Number One made him have such an huge ego. Caring only for Number Three. His main focus was being a leader of the siblings. Unfortunately, he had zero expertise in that field, hence the siblings lack of disrespect towards him.
Luther was very closed with Allison when they were kids, they were just as closed to each other as Maddie was with Five.
Luther have being on the moon for four years doing some research for their father. He always did everything their dad said, because he wanted to be a good child, 'cause he wanted their dad to be proud of him, but Maddie think that it was a waste of time, because their dad never show any respect to them. He have never told or showed them that he was proud of them or loved them.
Luther have abandonment issues, childhood trauma and trust issues.
Number Two: Diego Hargreeves, The Kraken or Batman as Maddie sometimes calls him. He has the abilities to curve anything he throw but he most used knives which is why he always carry around knives. Maddie calls him sometimes Batman because he is always dress in black, wearing a black mask when he is fighting crime in the dark, just like Batman. He decided to do that after he didn't pass the police academy.
Diego used to have frequent panic attacks when he was younger. Maddie taught him how to calm himself down and he thinks of her whenever in crisis.
Diego is a skilled, intense vigilante who has a real problem with authority. He isn't as naturally strong or smart as his siblings, so he's worked three times as hard for everything. Believing he should have been the leader of his family instead of his brother, Luther, he carries a massive chip on his shoulder that makes him hostile to just about everyone.
He is a rebellious, impulsive and brash individual with a tendency to show off. And he has it with acting before thinking.
However beneath his confident, cocky behavior, lies a deeply insecure individual who desperately wants to prove himself. He is the most emotional of the siblings and is quick to act on these emotions without thinking.
Diego is a really mommy's boy. He love their robot mother more than anything in the world. Following in their father's characteristic footsteps, he was cold for the majority of their childhood. Seeing to have never loved another person, gotten affection or care like the rest of the siblings, he preferred to be known as the rebel.
Diego didn't care about life. Ironic how he always criticize their father's ideas to make them superheroes, yet he choose to fight like one for a living.
Diego has PTSD, trust issues, childhood trauma and anxiety.
Maddie sees Diego once at month eating lunch together and sometimes most of the time that day ends with her helping him with catching some bad guys.
Number Three: Allison Hargreeves, The Rumor. She has the ability to rumor anyone to do anything, with the mere sentence, "I heard a rumor," which she follows with an order or a suggestion which the person has to carry out.
Allison and Luther were very closed when they were kids, and they had some sort of romance going on, even so they had never kissed, the siblings could see that they were in love with each other.
Allison was stubborn, but everywhere she went, a power of fierce followed her. She always thought she was better than others.
Allison is beautiful, elegant, and a formerly world-famous movie star who possess the power of suggestion, anything she say aloud comes to pass. Her life seems perfect from the outside, but her ability has undermined every relationship she's ever had. With her career on the decline and her marriage in shambles, she refuses to use her powers as she seeks a more authentic life.
Allison has a daughter name Claire. Because Maddie was not so close with Allison, she have only met Claire a few times.
Allison is a determined woman with a kind heart and strong values. She is a thoughtful and reflective person who just want to see her daughter which her ex-husband have gotten custody over.
The reason for her divorce is that her husband witness Allison using her powers on their daughter which is why he have gotten custody and Allison is now fighting to get the permission to Claire.
Number four: Klaus Hargreeves, The Séance. He has the ability to see and communicate with the dead. Klaus don't like his powers, so to make sure that he don't hear or see the dead, he always gets high while also drinking most of the time.
When they were kids, Maddie would let Klaus stay in her room and listen to her singing whenever his nightmares got really bad.
Maddie and Freddy was actually the only ones that took Klaus serious.
Klaus is a drug addict and lovable mess of a human being and yet, if you ask him, any day now his life is going to turn around. He's a classic 'middle child' a disarming pleaser who is seemingly everyone's friend, but will rob you being without thinking twice.
Klaus had the most problems with using his powers. The cause of that wasn't only their dad traumatizing him by forcing his son to face his fear, but also lack of care. Drugs became Klaus' safe place, but the thing with safe place is once you find it, you won't go back to reality.
He is always the most fun of all the siblings who say stupid things in a serious conversation. He is really good to have with you if you need to be cheer up 'cause he can bring a smile or a laugh.
Klaus is a damaged, fragile person who covers his pain with self deprecating humor and cynical hedonism and has rebelled against his father by refusing to be the hero he wanted him to be. He is an unreliable, unrepentant leech and drug addict, and as a result his opinion is often dismissed by his siblings.
Klaus have PTSD, childhood trauma and is addiction to drug.
All the siblings has PTSD it at some point but Klaus is the one that shows it more.
Maddie sees Klaus when he needs a place to sleep or when he gets into trouble and needs her help to get him something or to get him out of rehab.
Maddie wish that Klaus had turn out great, that was one of the things she prayed for him. Unfortunately, Klaus never learned his lesson. Despite that, they grew up relatively close.
Number six: Ben Hargreeves, The Horror. He has the ability to summon Eldritch Tentacles from a portal in his abdomen. They are extremely strong, meaning he's able to grab, stab, squeeze, and destroy his enemies.
All the siblings had a soft spot for Ben. The fear of using his powers always followed him. Other than Maddie, he had the kindest and purest soul out of all of the siblings.
He was a bookworm. Love reading books. The only time he didn't had a book with him was at training or on missions. He would always hang out with Klaus, trying to get him out of trouble. He was also scared of his powers. He didn't like using them. He was shy guy, but you could always count on him.
Unfortunately, his fear overcame him and he lost his life while they were kids. Only 16 years old. . Now Ben is a ghost which is following Klaus around.
Ben was the best of them, pure and kind hearted, too good for this world.
Before his death, Maddie was very close with Ben. He didn't like his powers and she understand why, so she always try to cover for him when he didn't wanted to use his powers when they were on a mission.
Ben was also really close with Freddy, those two would ofte be found reading in the Academy's library together.
Maddie feels responsible for Ben's death, believing that it was her fault.
Number seven: Vanya Hargreeves. She is the ordinary sister. She didn't have any powers, and she never went on mission with Maddie and the others.
Vanya used to hug everyone after missions and let anyone rant if they needed it, they all had to hug Vanya the day they came back without Ben.
Vanya is the black sheep of the family. She's the only one of Reginald Hargreeves' adopted children with no supernatural abilities. A meek and insecure wallflower, Vanya struggles to find her place in the world.
As the rest of the world cheered the other siblings, Vanya had to stay back at the Academy. Having no powers, she had the displeasure of being excluded from the siblings' daily lives, which is why other than Maddie, Five and Freddy were never close to her. None of them ever questioned why she was short of powers, they had made their peace with her being just a side family member, even so Maddie and Freddy tried their best to make Vanya feel part of the family.
Maddie, Five and Freddy attempted to try to be close and offer Vanya her the comfort and love she so desperately needed, but their dad made sure to keep her away from the rest of the siblings. It wasn't as if she was harmful in any way, but he wanted them to imagine their daily lives without her.
Some of the siblings were always treating Vanya as an outsider, but not Maddie or Freddy. They always did their best to made her feel like a member of the family.
The two always wonder why Reginald adopted Vanya since she didn't have any powers.
Vanya is a kind and bright person who suffer from deeply rooted trauma.
Maddie used to see Vanya once at week, they always meet at a café and talks about stuff. But it was like it drift away. And Maddie was also a little bit angry at Vanya because of that book she wrote where she have told the whole world about the others. But she chose not to let it get to her so much as it got to the others, like Diego, he was very angry at Vanya 'cause of the book she have wrote about them and the life in the Academy.
Diego felt like his childhood was just broadcast to the rest of the world.
Number Eight: Madison/ Maddie Hargreeves. She is the most powerful of the siblings but she don't act or show it. She has telekinesis which mean she has the ability to move objects with her mind.
She has the ability of metal Manipulation which mean that she can control and deploy metal internes upon objects.
She has the ability of Psionic Energy which mean she is able to project red energy blasts and orbs.
She has the ability to conjure and create a shield of red telekinetic energy. She can create red energy blasts with her hands and everytime she used her powers, her eyes turned red.
The more she uses her abilities, the weaker she gets, her powers are weaker, if she is tired or hurt and if she uses up her energy she faint.
Even so she have powerful ability, she only use them when she really need to, otherwise, she fight hand to hand combat which she is really good at.
Maddie love to sing, playing on piano and guitar which she is amazing at.
When she need to clean her mind she either, draw, sing or play on her piano or guitar.
Maddie also have PTSD from her childhood trauma which is also cause by Reginald Hargreeves.
Maddie, Five, Ben, Freddy and Vanya had a study group together when they were kids and the four would sometimes tease Five about his super neat handwriting.
Klaus, Five, Ben, Diego, Freddy and Maddie used to sneak into movie theaters as kids.
Maddie was the light in all of their lives even if she is the eighth sibling, she kept them whole, she kept them together, she made them feel like there was a reason.
Custos: Freddy or Fred. Freddy have the abilities to control and create element and is a shape-shifter which means he has the abilities to take form as all kind of animals. He don't used his abilities much, he rather handle things without.
Freddy is Maddie's companion and best friend. Other than Klaus and Ben, Maddie was the first one that accepted Freddy and saw him as a member of the family.
Freddy is really smart, other than Five, he is actually the smartest one of the siblings, he is an amazing fighter and athlete. He is actually the most skilled fighter in the family and the best of them to others things, but he don't act or show it. He don't say much, but he say what is on his mind and stand for what is right. He is always calm but you don't want to make him angry. You can always count on him and no matter what, he always have your back. He is an amazing and loyal friend.
Freddy is loving, protective and righteous individual. He is shown to immediately throw himself in harm's way and act as a shield in dangerous situations and is shown to have a firm belief in right from wrong.
Freddy's intellect is a shield which protects him from his emotions.
Just like Maddie, Freddy was the light in all of the siblings' lives even if he was the ninth sibling, he kept them whole, he kept them together, he made them feel like there was a reason. More than Maddie actually did.
It was like Freddy, Ben and Maddie was the glue that kept the siblings together. But Freddy was the strongest glue.
Freddy joined the family at the age of nine. Reginald said that he found Freddy, a raining winter night right outside the Academy, he was only wearing pajamas and was barefoot, he had bruises and injuries all over his face and it looked like he has being running for a while.
Reginald took him in so he could test his new machine, he wanted to have another person as powerful as Maddie, so he experimented on Freddy to make him as powerful as Maddie. But something went wrong and the machine got destroyed causing Freddy to lose his memories which mean that he got amnesia.
Reginald got angry because it took him five years making that machine and he couldn't make a new one. He got angry at Freddy because he said that it was his fault. But he knew that he couldn't kick him out. Even so he didn't like it, he still let Freddy stay, but only because he had abilities. He didn't gave Freddy a name, not even a number like the other kids, he just called him Custos which was a word for something that they didn't know what meant.
Reginald always treated Freddy harder than the other siblings, like an object.
Maddie was the only one that was always there for Freddy, even at times when no one else was and Freddy was also always there for Maddie and because of that they have being by each other's side for 17 years.
Freddy has trust issues. PTSD. Childhood trauma and anger issues and that mean that if he gets too angry at someone he can end up hurting them or worse killing them but only if he gets too caught up.
Number Five: Five Hargreeves. He has the ability to manipulate space and time, meaning that he can use time travel, teleportation, and time manipulation to his advantage. He can teleport both short and long distances.
Other than Freddy, Five was actually the smartest one of the siblings.
Five is shown to have a genius intellect, often dismissing other, including his family, except for Maddie and Freddy as stupid or inferior, and expressing disinterest in their personal affairs. He is also to shown sarcastic, pragmatic, and incredibly prideful.
Five also has PTSD from his childhood trauma.
Five was the only one of the kids that didn't had a real name. The rank system had a negative effect on all the kids except for Five. The sarcastic boy didn't care that he wasn't perfect in his father's eyes. He knew he had great power. Five's number didn't have a huge impact on him, so he just never changed his name.
He doesn't suffer fools and is the smartest person in the room. He's haunted by the things he's seen and done and is on the verge of losing his grip on reality.
He hates to fail and is a perfectionist.
Somtimes when he is stress, he does math equations in his head so he has something else to focus on or just pace around the room.
He hates tea and if he is ever offerd it he will almost be offended, he believes coffe is superior.
When he was younger Five would steal Diego's knife and throw them at the wall for fun.
Both Maddie and Five don't see each other as siblings, they see each other as best friends.
When they were kids, Five was Maddie's best friend in the world. They were best friends and very closed, they told each other everything and did everything together, it was like they were made for each other.
They were always by each other's side and there for each other, they were inseparable. They shared secrets together, did homework together, eat snacks in their bedrooms together, they never did anything without the other. If one got hurt or sick, the other would take care of them, until they got better. If one got into trouble, the other would back them up and help them.
Most of the time, you could find Maddie by Five's side and him by hers. No one have ever seen two people so in love. They were made for each other.
Five was the one who motivated Maddie to be brave and strong. And she was the only one that could make him act kind and soft.
Five was Maddie's reason not to lose control and Maddie was Five's reason to live and to be soft and kind.
The two both admired each other but didn't understand their feeling for one another. Both may be different but one thing they have in common is protecting the ones they care about.
He was the sun that could turn her dark days into bright days again and she did the same to him.
Five never called Maddie's abilities for powers, he called them magic, because he think they were like magic.
Maddie would sometimes call Five by the nickname she gave him. Jumpy Guy, Pretty Boy, Coffee Boy, Short Pants and Fivey.
They always hang out together, where one was, the other was not far away. When they were done training, Maddie and Five always used to hang out alone, they either trained together, talked, read or all other kind of things. Sometimes, most of the time, they would sneak out at night or when they were done training with the others.
They were always sitting next to each other on the Academy's roof top with their legs hanging over the edge watching the stars, sunset and sometimes the sunrise together.
Five would sometimes blink Maddie around in the city, they went to the park and did other things, trying to act like normal kids.
When everyone was asleep, Five often blinked to Maddie's room so they could have their night talks.
When one of them had a nightmare, they would sleep in each other's rooms together and Five would always hum for Maddie until she fell asleep.
Sometimes when both of them couldn't sleep, they would go to the Academy's rooftop and stare up at the stars.
Even when they were on mission, Five and Maddie would always have each other's back.
Their dad would get angry by how much time they spend together and he warned them many times that they need to stop. But they never did.
Five is the kindest and harshest person Maddie have ever laid eyes on. He always think that he was better than anyone and he always acted tough and kinda like an asshole towards everyone, except for Maddie. He always acted kind, caring, sweet and soft towards her, which was the reason the other siblings realized and knew that Five liked Maddie in a romantic way.
One of the reason why Five was in love with Maddie was because she was the only one really there for him, she saw through him, understood him, listen to him, saw the good in him. He gave her the biggest hope just like she did to him. She saw something in him, that only she saw. Just like he did to her.
Every since they were four, he have always being there for her and she for him. When she was scared or sad, he would be there to hold her hand and comfort her. When she couldn't sleep he would lay down next to her and hummed for her until she fell asleep. They always help each other with their chores.
They had a bond that no one could explain.
The others called them the dynamic duo or the heart and the head. Since Maddie always think with her heart first and Five think with his head first.
Everyone other than them knew that they were so in love in each other and their siblings would always tease them about it, even so they always denied it but everyone could see it.
And when Freddy came into the family, Five was jealous over how close Maddie and Freddy became, but lucky Maddie got them to hang out together with her and Five started liking Freddy and cared about him, they saw each other as brothers.
Maddie, Five and Freddy became inseparable, not as much as Five and Maddie was inseparable.
The three were called The three Musketeers or the golden trio by their other siblings, the news and the newspaper.
Freddy would hang out often with Five and Maddie and he left them of course along sometimes, so they could have some alone time, because just like the rest of the siblings, he also saw the connection and bond Five and Maddie had.
Maddie and Five did everything together. Were almost always together. Always by each other's side. That is until when they were 13, Five got angry at their dad because he wouldn't allow Five to travel through time. He wanted to prove their father was wrong and decided to time travel without Maddie. So he ran out of the Academy. Maddie tried to stop him but couldn't, he did promised her that he would be back and then take her with him.
But he never returned.
When Five disappeared, he took half of her soul with him. She was never the same. Everything changed for her and half of her body got empty. It was like a part of her was gone. She changed, she couldn't really focus and she didn't wanted to get up, 'cause it was like everytime she was asleep she was with Five and he was with her. They were together. She knew that it was a dream, but it felt so real. She could touch him and talk to him. It was like they were connected somehow the way those dreams was.
She could feel him, feel his pain just like he could with her. And she could feel that wherever he was, he was lonely, scared and in a lot of pain.
At night her dreams were filled with his face lite up with a rare smile he'd only give her and she'd grown to love, only to wake up in a cold sweat and hot tears running down her face.
A month could go by where she barely slept. And even if she did sleep, she'd wake up again and if she was in her own room, she would head right back to his room. Using her powers to play an illusion of her and Five together.
Every time Maddie would sleep, she would dream of Five. But the dreams felt so real, her and Five was together, hanging out, doing all the things, they used to do. Those dreams felt so real, she could touch him, feel him.
Maddie cried herself to sleep every night since Five's disappearing. She only cried or sob in private. Even thought everyone knew that she'd been hit the hardest by his absence.
But Maddie didn't want people to see her as weak. She was a fighter, she have become that because of Five. He brought out the fighter in her which is why she can't hide it away just because he is gone. But still she didn't want the others to see her cry, shattered and crying because of her best friend and other half was gone.
Missing Five wasn't just a feeling. It felt like someone had stuck their hand inside her, ripped her heart and soul from her chest, then crush it before throwing it against the wall.
She tried her best to keep herself strong and sane without him. But it was hard to keep herself in control. She was scared in using her powers 'cause she knew that if she lost control, she would destroy everything around her.
Five has being the only who could really calm her down and get her powers under control. But since he was gone, she was scared, but lucky Freddy was able to calm her down and he have being there for her everytime she was close in losing control.
She wrote letters in her diary to Five, even so she had a feeling that he would never read them, but she kept writing them, everyday, telling him what he have missed. She has plan in giving the letter to him when he return one day.
She would sit in Five's room by his desk and write the letters, knowing that there was no way he'd see any of them. In those letters, she would write about the day, her feeling, her problems, her stress, her anger, but lucky she had Freddy who was really good talking too.
She would sit outside the Academy for hours, waiting for Five to return and she would even sleep in his bed so just in case she would be the first person he saw.
Her behavior drove her dad insane, causing them to get into fights more often than they used to.
Two years after her brother Luther left, Reginald Hargreeves kicked Maddie out.
Now she lived in a house with Freddy in a small and quite neighborhood.
The only reason she stayed in the house for so long was because of Five. Because she wanted to be there in case he would return.
But even so Maddie still saw Diego and Klaus, she was still feeling lonely, some of the times. But lucky she had Freddy.
Other than Five, Freddy was connected to her more than anyone of the siblings. Once Five left, Freddy filled a hole for Maddie, just as she did for him.
Even so Freddy and Maddie were together most of the time, and he is understanding and was good to talk to. He still couldn't compare to Five, no one could.
Maddie missed Five so much, and she think about him everyday. When he disappeared she broke down. But she had a feeling that Five didn't just disappeared, she knew how he always wanted to travel through time, and she had a feeling that he somehow got stuck in the future. So Maddie spend years trying to find a way to figure out how to get him back.
One day she thought she had found a way to teleport through time and get Five. So she created a huge energy blast and went through it, but it's didn't take long before she was thrown out of it and landed on the floor passed out.
When she woke up, she was ten again. Maddie knew that there would be a big chance that it would end worse if she did it again, so instead she tried to build a time machine, she knew it was the only chance she had to get Five back. But its harder than it is to build a time machine, she stole many of her dad's money to buy the things she needed to build a time machine. But her dad discovered it and they got into a huge fight again and it ending with him kicking Maddie out of the house.
It's two years ago since she moved out and she haven't stop trying to find a way to get Five back or to figure out a way to somehow sent him a message for him to know that she was still here, waiting for him to return.
She still write those letters in her diary.
