16 ~ The Pipe

He stares at the sword for a few moments, with satisfaction.

I turn the pipe over, lift it to my mouth and blow. Softly at first, then harder. All that comes out is a pathetic squeak that sounds like everything straining against one another.

Pan bursts out laughing. I'm expecting tears to come rolling down his face any moment. I stand there, waiting until he stops. "Well I don't see you telling me how to play it." I say crossly.

"It's a magical pipe. Duh." He says, still laughing. "You don't have to play it. Gosh. I thought you knew that already. Just think of the tune, blow, and it will come out."

"Of course I should have realized that you have no musical talent whatsoever." I say.

"Hey, I can play it without magic, thank you." He says defensively.

I think back to all the tunes I've heard. The only one I can come up with is the song Atlas by Coldplay (on the side. Catching Fire soundtrack. A little hard to play on a pipe but a beautiful song nonetheless.)

Starting softly, I blow, and the tune comes out, a little dodgy and halting, but still there." I take it to the end then smile. "Cool."

"Great, are you happy now? You've played your little song. Now I can do what I need with this sword." He runs his hand down the blade, obviously enchanting it or something. Then, he lifts it up.

Nothing happens. I don't know if anything was meant to happen, but he's obviously disappointed. "Why is this not working?!" He yells in frustration.

"Maybe you forgot the part that it's just a sword." I shrug carelessly.

"It's not." He says, sighing, turning it over again.

While he's not watching, I raise the pipe, think of my tune and play it. As it plays, his eyes widen. Suddenly, he lunges over and rips the pipe from me, but it's too late. I'm done. I smirk as he looks at me in shock.

"Didn't expect that?"

"What did you do?!" He yells, aghast. "That tune... it's..."

"It calls all your Lost Boys to you. I know." I say.

"More than that..." I'm unprepared as he suddenly lunges at me. I trip backwards and hit a tree behind me. He pins me there, eyes a mixture of anger and... worry? "How do you know about that?"

"Ugh. Take it easy." I complain as my head complains from the sudden impact. "I'll tell you how. Think back to before I saved Henry - that idiotic plan you concocted with Tink. You and your little fairy had it all planned out." I snigger. "Or so you thought. Until I met the Shadow. He told me everything..."

**RECAP OF BOOK 1*******

This was not what I expected at all. "What?" I ask, confused. "Peter Pan is magical. Can't he just... you know... fly away?"

"For a day, or a few, yes. But not forever. Peter Pan can never escape Neverland, unless he has the heart of the truest believer. Figuritively speaking, that is. He's going to take Henry to a place on the island where the most powerful magic is. Only the person with the heart of the truest believer can access it. With this power, Pan will be able to leave Neverland. He grows tired of this island."

How can you possibly grow tired of an island that gives you whatever you want just by imagining it? Beats me.

I nod. "Thank you, Tinkerbell."

********Start Flashback*********

Confused, I walk forwards. How is it that in a land surrounded by magic, he can't survive. Obviously it's fake. But now I'm more confused than ever.

"Hello Ruby Parker." The voice is soft, low. Eery.

"Hello?" I whirl around, feeling my heart thud. "Where are you?"

"Right here." Something brushes against me. I turn around to see myself staring into the blazing eyes of the shadow. "W...what do you want?" I ask shakily.

"Don't be afraid." It croons. "I want to help you. I want to help you defeat Pan. But you must liten to me."

"I'm listening." I assure him. "But why should I believe you?"

"Because..." it pauses. "I too am trapped here. Until Pan dies, I cannot leave. I can tell you what you need to do."

"What do I need to do?" I ask shakily.

"You are going to sacrifice yourself for that boy, Henry. You will not die, but fall into a state of slumber. Pan will rescue you."

"Wait..." I frown. "What?" He cares nothing for me.

"But he wants something from you, nevertheless. He will save you. I know him well. When you awake, he will want the sword. You must make a deal with him. In return for the sword, you must get his pipe."

"Really?" I was expecting something a little more... difficult to get."

"Blow this tune." The Shadow touches my hand. Instantly, a tune enters my head - one I'll never forget.

"Why?" I ask.

"Do you believe me?" The Shadow asks. Its breath tickles the back of my neck, lifting my hair.

"Yes."

"Good. The tune is going to rial the Lost Boys. They will want to kill Pan. They will turn on him, like wolves to a rabbit. You can then leave Neverland. I will help you with this. But you must get everyone off the island before you make the deal. If Emma and the rest are still here, then they too will die. I can only take one person."

"Thank you.... Shadow." I say with a smile.

"Remember the plan. You must save Henry. that is the only way. Only when Pan saves you are you to make the deal."

"I'll remember." I promise. "I don't break promises."
