Chapter 28: A Week

Dallas's POV
--

It's been a week. A week since I last saw Nicole. I'm dying inside. She hasn't come over to my house. For. A. Week.

It seems she has agreed to her father's deal, something that I would have disagreed on. I can't see her. I can't talk to her. I can't text her. I can't call her. And when I try, my messages don't go through. She's blocked me. School starts soon so she'll have to talk to me. Right? Right?

It feels like every day my heart shrinks in inch. I snap more at my mum. I loose my temper more easily. I barely get any sleep at night.

The first day, when I came home a week ago from her house, my mum was looking at me funny the whole rest of the day. That night, she asked me what had happened and where Nicole was. I didn't answer and that's all she needed to hear.

Thank goodness my father didn't know. He hasn't been home ironically for a week either. But if he knew, either he would be very angry( never get an Alpha angry. Learned that the hard way), or he would think of me as weak for not being able to carry on like usual.

I think he would be more angry due to the fact taking away a wolf's Mate is a major blow and a very low act. Had Spencer been in my Pack, he would have been exiled.

And suddenly, I know what I need to do. I have to see her again.

Opening my bedroom door, I walk through the long hallways of my house to the marble stairs. I don't make a sound as I descend them and quickly turn the corner to the front door.

My mother knows that Spencer would kill me if I went over there. She wouldn't want me to go. But she knew that me not seeing Nic was impossible, too, so she promised we would find a way. So Mum cannot know.

I'm a foot from the door, reaching for the cool knob.

"Where are you going?" I turn around with a flinch to meet silver eyes rather than the green ones I was expecting to see. This is worse than confronting Mum.

As soon as I turn, my father's eyes seem to examine me, lingering on my face where I know the bags remain. His silver eyes seem to become darker and darker each passing second.

I shove my hands in the wide pockets of my sweatshirt, ducking my head with a jerk.

"Why do you have bags under your eyes, Dallas?" When I don't answer, I feel his condescending gaze boring into me. "Dallas. Answer me." He commands.

"I'm going to see Nicole." I say quietly before turning to the door again and with a fast tug, it's open, and I basically run through.

The pieces fit together for my father, who's way too smart to be fooled.

"You haven't seen her for awhile, have you?" And then he's in front of me, grabbing my chin gently with his warm fingers, forcing me to look up at him with my scarred eyes. "He found out, didn't he?" I don't answer as I feel my eyes grow misty. "You can't see her, can you?" Again, I don't answer, knowledgable of my rough voice going to be unable to keep the emotion from my voice. My eyes become foggy and wet. I will not cry. I will not cry. I will not cry in front of my father. I am fifteen. I will not cry.

He engulfs me in a hug, surprising me. My father isn't usually a touchy-feely person unless it's hugging my mum. He leans down slightly, whispering in my ear. "We will get her back. I promise."

"He was going to kill me. But Nicole promised she would never talk or see me again if he let me live." My father pulls away sharply, saying a long string of curses.

"You can't go see her, Dal. Not today. I hate seeing you like this and I know it's painful and it hurts, but he will kill you and you are not full grown yet. You aren't that strong yet. Dal, you have to wait." I wish I didn't say anything. "I will not loose another son."

I flinch, effectively loosening his grip on me and tense. "Dallas. Promise me you won't."

I lurch free and turn mid-stride as I start running for Nicole's house. Again, Dad curses and I hear his light steps behind me and smell the dismay coming from him. And then I shift, happy to be free of my human skin and limbs. Ictus(Shock) takes over, sending me to the back of my head as he urges us forward.

He doesn't say anything when he looks back to see my father standing, hands pressed to his forehead, elbows out, face contorted into one of worry and slight anger that I had disobeyed him. He's not going to follow me.

And then I'm at Nicole's front door. I shove Ictus out of the way of control and scrabble at the bottom of the wood frantically, leaving claw marks engraved in it. Nicole's honey-sweet scent is fresh, making me ache to be on the other side of the door. Her father's odor, however, is not. He's not home. This might actually work. Maybe, just, maybe.

And then the door opens, revealing the one person I ache for staring down at me. She takes a step back in surprise.

"Shock!" She exclaims, her voice coming out high pitched. And then she tilts her head, probably noticing my green eyes rather than Shock's dual colored ones. "No. Dallas." She corrects herself and frowns at me. A wolf whine leaves my lips at her frown. I don't like when she frowns. She needs to smile.

I tilt my head and rest my chest on my front paws with my butt in the air. She shakes her head, seeming to understand, and closes the door slightly so I would have to knock her over to get inside. "You shouldn't be here, Dallas. You're going to get yourself killed." And that's when I notice the tired look in her eyes, the fatigue lacing her words, and the droop of her shoulders and sag of her head. I whimper and paw at the door, staring up at her with my human eyes. And then Shock takes over again, my eyes switching to blue and brown. Nicole's crystal blue eyes widen and she shakes her head. "Shock." And my eyes go back to green. "Dallas. What's going on?"

"Let me have control, Dallas! I want in!" Shock screams at me in my head, his growly voice echoing.

"No."

And then I lower myself onto all four legs and crawl towards Nicole. She sighs, opening the door to let me in. "You're lucky my dad's not home."

With a bark, I swiftly dart inside, and after Nice closes the door, I run circles around her. She laughs at me and when I come to a stop in front of her, she laces her fingers in my fur and pets my head gently. The Sparks are overpowering and I close my eyes with a sigh of content. This is what I need. To be with her.

"Dallas. What are you doing here?" She breaks my thoughts and I realize that we are now in her room, her leaning back onto her bed with a soft thump. Bunching my muscles, I leap up next to her, licking her cheek to earn a giggle from her.

I bark again and push her with my nose.

"Right. You can't talk. Why don't you shift? Oh..." Her cheeks become red with embarrassment. "You don't have any clothes." I crack a wolffish grin. "You can borrow some of my dad's." At the mention of her father, a whimper leaves my lips. "It's all I have, Dal." She says before going out of her room to fetch some clothes.

When she returns, she throws them at my head and turns around so I can get dressed. With a sigh, I shift. My bones pop and crack and my skin stretches and remolds itself so I'm human. I shove the pants and shirt on, my nose crinkled in disgust at her father's stench. She hums under her breath, unaware of my being done.

Walking over quietly, I wrap my arms around her stomach and lift her. She shrieks, her eyes opening and widening until I set her down again with a laugh. When she turns to look at me, her eyes narrow.

"What are you doing here, Dallas?" Back on track, I see.

"I can't see my best mate?" I ask pleasantly, unperturbed. With a grunt, I drop myself into her desk chair and spin. The world becomes a dizzy blur. And then I come to a stop.

Nicole stands in front of me, her hand preventing the chair from moving. "You're no fun." I tell her. She just stares at me, her head tilted. Her eyes bore into mine and I can see she knows something's wrong.

"Why do you have bags under your eyes?" Her voice is quiet.

"Because I couldn't sleep." I reply, yet again not ceasing my good mood.

"Why?"

"Because I couldn't see you." She seems taken aback by my response. I grin at her, spinning the chair once again after she looses her grip.

"What do I have anything to do with that?"

"You're my best mate. I don't know what to do with myself when I'm without you." She shakes her head.

"My dad's going to kill you."

"He can try."

"Dal. I'm serious. You need to leave."

"I've only been here for a few minutes."

"A few minutes too long." She responds. "He comes home at five now."

"Wow! Six hours earlier! That's a record!" I reply with fake enthusiasm.

"Do you know what time it is?"

"Yeah, three."

"No. It's 4:45." The chair stills, causing me to curse under my breath.

"Yeah. I really do need to leave. I'll come back tomorrow." I stand and she opens her mouth to protest. I cut her off by kissing her lightly and then walking out her door and down the steps to the front door.

She doesn't follow.
