Metamorphosis -- Meat Eater

~*****~

I understood why Mary never liked Sam. She'd probably never like him while he used those powers he got from a demon. Dean and I exchanged a worried glance before moving around to the entrance of the building. "So..." Dean trails off. "Anything you want to tell us, Sam?"

"Guys, hold on, okay? Just let me--"

"You gonna say, Let me explain?" Dean asks irritably. "You're gonna explain this? How about this? Why don't you start with who she is and what the hell is she doing here?"

"It's good to see you again, guys." The woman chirps, and I immediately know who she is.

"Ruby?" I growl. I turn my glare on Sam. "Are you freaking kidding me?"

Dean lunges and prepares to kill her. "Don't!" Sam shouts and struggles to stop Dean. Dean shunts him off, and then is pinned down by Ruby. "Ruby, stop it!"

My hand curls into her hair and I rip her away. Ruby tumbles to the ground, and lets out a choking noise as I grab her by the throat and pin her to the wall, ready to end her once and for all.

"Lottie, stop! Please!" Sam shouts.

"This ends now, Sam!" I shout at him. Ruby lifts her leg and kicks me off. My head cracks against the ground. "Sam--" I warn. But he's already in front of her. "The sex must be great if you're protecting that vile little bitch!" I hiss.

"Ruby. Just go." Sam urges softly.

Ruby glances at Sam for a moment before hurrying towards the recently possessed man. "Where the hell do you think you're going?" Dean growls.

"The E.R... Unless you want your guard dog to attack again." Ruby retorts.

Dean helps me stand, and we just glance at Sam. "Guys," Sam tries, but we brush past him. "Guys!"

Back at the motel, Dean and I don't speak to Sam as we get in. Mary gives me a soft coo as I take her out of the car seat and lean her against my chest. "Dean, what are you doing?" Sam asks urgently. "What, are you-- are you leaving?"

"You don't need us." Dean retorts. "You and Ruby go fight demons."

"Hold on, Dean. Come on, man." Sam complains. I move out of the way as Dean slugs his brother across the face. "You satisfied?" Dean hits him again and Mary begins to whimper. "I guess not."

"Do you even know how far off the reservation you've gone?" I hiss. "How far from normal? From human?"

"I'm just exorcising demons." Sam says softly.

"With your mind!" Dean snaps. "What else can you do?"

"I can send them back to hell. It only works with demons, and that's it." Sam explains.

"What else can you do?!" Dean growls as he grasps his brothers shirt and shoves him to the wall.

"I told you!"

"And I have every reason in the world to believe that." Dean growls.

"Look, I should have said something. I'm sorry, Dean. I am. But try to see the other side here." Sam tries.

"The other side?!" Dean growls.

"I'm pulling demons out of innocent people!" Sam expresses.

"Use the knife!"'

"The knife kills the victim!" Sam retorts. "What I do, most of them survive! Look, I've saved more people in the last five months then we do in a year!"

"Is that what Ruby wants you to think?" Dean asks. "Kind of like the way she tricked you into using your powers? Slippery slope, brother. Just wait and see. Because it's gonna get darker and darker, and god knows where it ends."

"I'm not gonna let it go too far." Sam tries to promise.

Dean snorts and turns. He swipes a lamp off of the table, causing Mary to start crying from the noise. "Enough!" I hiss at him. "Look, Sam, it's already gone too far. This power is something you got from demons, Sam. And if we didn't know you, we would want to hunt you. And so would other hunters."

"You left, Lottie... Dean was gone." Sam retorts numbly. "And I was here. I had to keep on fighting with you guys. And what I'm doing.... It works."

"Well, tell me." Dean grunts. "If it's so terrific... Then why'd you lie about it to us? Why did an angel tell me to stop you?" Sam's gaze flies upwards. "Cas said that if I don't stop you, he will. See, what that means, Sam-- that means that God doesn't want you doing this. So, are you just gonna stand there and tell me that everything is all good?"

Mary's whimpering settles down finally, and I take the opportunity to feed her. With my back turned to them, I angle my head to keep listening. Sam's phone begins to ring, snapping them out of the silence they'd been in. "Hello?" He hums softly. "Hey, Travis. Yeah, hey. It's good to hear your voice, too, yeah. Look, it's not a really good time right now. It's...." He trails off. "Yeah, okay. Well, just give me the details, and, uh... Carthage, Missouri. Looking for Jack Montgomery."

Dean and I share a hesitant glance before we move to get our stuff in the car.

Sam couldn't believe what Dean and I had witnessed. "I can't believe it. Mom-- a hunter?" Sam asked incredulously.

"I wouldn't have believe it, either, if I hadn't seen it myself. I mean, that woman could kick some ass. I mean, she almost took me down." Dean mentioned.

"She did take you down." I remind him.

"No sass," He retorts. I give a soft chuckle and peer into Mary's car seat.

"How'd she look?" Sam asked. "I mean... was she happy?"

"Yeah, she was awesome." Dean nodded. "Funny and smart. So hopeful. Dad, too... Until, of course..." Dean trails off. Sam gave a hard sigh. "What?"

"Nothing." Sam quickly said. "It's just-- our parents, and now we find out our grandparents, too? Our whole family murdered, and for what? So Yellow-Eyes could get in my nursery and bleed in my mouth?"

I gave a hard grunt. "Sam, he never said anything about demon blood." I mention. "You knew about that?"

"Yeah, for about a year." Sam answered.

"A whole year." Dean gaped.

"I should've told you. I'm sorry." Sam apologized.

I could see Sam tense up as I scoff. "You've been saying that a lot lately, Sam. But sure, whatever. You don't want to tell us, you don't have to."

"Guys--"

"It's fine." Dean says quickly.

Sam glances between the both of us for a moment before heaving out a sigh. "Whatever."

Dean glances back at me for a moment. "How she doin'? Sleeping fine?"

My gaze snaps to him for a moment and I smile. "Yeah, been a while since she actually enjoyed a car ride." I mention. "The Impala's got a smoother drive than what I'd been hauling her around in."

Dean just grins and rubs at the dashboard. "That's my girl."

I peered through my binoculars at the man in the window. "You sure that's him?" Dean asks.

"Only Jack Montgomery in town." I mention.

"And we're looking for...." Dean trails off.

Sam shrugged. "Travis said to keep an eye out for anything weird." Sam stated.

"Weird?" Dean asks. Sam nodded. "All right, well, yeah, I've seen big weird, little weird, weird with crazy on top. But this guy? Come on, this guy's boring."

"I don't know, man, I mean, Travis said he was pretty sure." Sam stated.

"Hate to break up your whining fest, but this guy is going whole ham on cold food. Oh, ew-- bones and all, huh?" I laugh. "Oh, that's nasty--" I whine.

"I'd say that qualifies as weird." Sam mentions.

"Get us out of here, please--" I mention through a gag. "Oh, god--"

"What's the matter? You're usually all stone faced at the sight of something disgusting." Dean mentioned with a laugh.

"Yeah, but thanks to your kid, I now puke at the sight of a squashed bug." I mention irritably as I palm at my throat.

Once we stepped into the motel room, a grin immediately spread onto my face. "Travis!" I chirp enthusiastically. Travis just grinned and set down the beer he'd been holding. "See, Sam? I told you we should've hid the beer."

"Smartass--" Travis remarked. "Get over here!" He laughed before enveloping me in a tight hug. "Oh, good to see you!"

"You, too!" I retort happy as he turns to hug Sam and Dean.

"Man, you got tall, kid." Travis mentioned as he gazed at Sam, looking him up and down. "And you-- the kid's a strange turn for you." I palm at Mary's head for just a moment before I take her from Dean's arms. "How long has it been?"

"Got to be ten years." Sam said.

"You still a-- oh, what was it? A mathlete?" Travis asked.

Sam laughed. "No."

"He sure is!" Dean remarks.

"Been too long, guys." Travis sighs. "I mean, look at you-- grown men and women. John would have been damn proud of you... Sticking together like this."

"Yeah. Yeah, we're as thick as thieves." Dean retorts as he glances at Sam. "Nothing more important than family."

"Sorry I'm late for the dance." Travis mentions as Sam casts Dean an irritated look. "Thanks for helping out an old man." He gestures to his arm as I take a seat on the bed and lay the baby across the spread I put down. "I'm a little shorthanded. So, you track down Montgomery?"

"Yeah, we found him at his home." Sam said.

"And?" Travis asked.

I stifled a gag as I'm reminded of the disgusting eating. "Well, he had a hell of a case of the munchies, topped off with a burger that he--" I couldn't restrain the gag. "That he forgot to cook." I finish through my teeth.

"That's him, all right," Travis nodded.

"What's him?" Dean asked.

"Guys, we got a Rougarou on our hands." Travis explained.

"A Rougarou?" Dean asked, as if he didn't believe him. "That sounds made up? That sounds made up."

I laugh. "Dean, it's not made up." I mention.

"They're mean, nasty little suckers-- rotted teeth, wormy skin, the works." Travis says.

"Well, that ain't this guy." I retort. "I mean, he was wearing a cellphone on his belt."

"He'll turn ugly soon enough. They start out human, for all intents and purposes." Travis explains.

"So, what, they go through some kind of metamorphosis?" Sam asks.

Travis nodded. "Yep, like a maggot turning into a bull fly. About age thirty, they start changing-- bones shift around, animal instincts kick in. But most of all, they're hungry."

"Hungry for what?" Dean asks.

"At first, for everything, but then for long pig."

"Long pig?" I echo. "You've got to be kidding me."

"What's Long Pig?" Dean asks.

"Human flesh-- how are you-- you know what? Don't answer that." I quickly say.

Travis laughed. "Hungry grows in till they can't fight it." Travis continues. "Till they got to take themselves a big, juicy chomp, and then it happens."

"What happens?" Sam asks.

"They transform completely and fast." Travis sighs. "One bite's all it takes-- eyes, teeth, skin all turns. No going back, either. They feed once, they're a monster forever. And our man Jack's headed there on a bullet train."

"Well, how'd you find this guy, if he's a walking, talking human?" Dean questioned.

Travis smirked. "Let's just say it runs in his family."

"You mean--" I trailed off.

"Killed his daddy back in '78." Travis said. "Son of a bitch mangled eight bodies before I put him down. Guy used to be a dentist-- Cadillac, trophy wife. Little did I know, pregnant trophy wife. She put the boy up for adoption. By the time I found out, he was long gone, lost in the system."

"You mean to tell me you couldn't find someone?" Sam asks.

Travis heaved out an amused chuckle. "I'm not sure I wanted to. The idea of hunting down some poor kid... I don't think I'd have the heart. No. Wanted to wait, make damn sure I had the right man. Apparently, I do."

Mary began to whimper and squirm on the bed. "You'll have to excuse me, Travis." I mention softly before lifting her up and stepping into the kitchen area.
