Forty Five

In the car, Grace gets a text from an unknown number: 'It's okay :).'

Peter.

She bites her lip, wondering what to say in reply. She can't think of anything, so she goes ahead and adds him as a contact.

'Parker,' she types. Then, she replaces it with, 'Peter.' She frowns and erases it, typing, 'Parker,' again. Then, she adds a red heart emoji, but second guesses that too.

A different colored heart isn't the same as a red heart, is it? Like the purple one, for example. But the red is like... a thing, right? The only reason she used that one was because... he's Spider-Man. But if her dad saw it for whatever reason, he certainly wouldn't take it that way.

He probably wouldn't like her having Peter's number at all, but it's still better to be on the safe side. She changes it to a blue heart.

Finally, she simply texts him, 'I'll keep you posted,' then puts her phone down. She sighs quietly.

Truth be told, when she first saw him, her first thought was of how cute he was — actually, no, her first thought was, Oh, my gosh, it's Spider-Man, but her second thought was of how cute he was.

He just walked in, this sorta tall, adorable, awkward boy. His jacket was almost too big for him, and his hair was neatly pushed back out of his face. And, then, when he started talking...

His voice was a little high, in a cute way, and he didn't know what to say, so he just kept stuttering and trying to act casual. It was adorable.

And then the sympathy on his face, the sincereness with which he agreed to help her. She was so nervous about telling him everything and asking him in the first place, but he understood. He'd only just met her, but she could tell that he cared.

She just has to believe that her plan will work, as underdeveloped as it feels.

Soon after that, Clint helps Wanda escape from the compound, which means Cap will have two more people on his side. Grace texts Peter about it.

Meanwhile, Tony is making a new suit for Peter in his lab and talking on the phone to Happy, who's finally back. He's going to take Peter to Berlin.

"Am I going with Happy too?" Grace asks after Tony tells her.

He shakes his head. "No. I want to keep you with me." But then he stops and looks up at her, cautiously adding, "If that's okay with you..."

She knows saying yes would prevent her from talking with Peter in person again — about the plan, of course — but her father is just so hopeful that she has to say yes. He wants to know for sure that she isn't mad at him anymore, and nothing can be put above that. She smiles. "Yeah, that's okay."

"You know, you don't have to go at all if you don't want to," he continues. "I mean, it is kinda crazy I'm even taking you to this fight, but... well, I figured you would convince me to take you anyway, and you going could really help us, but-"

"Dad," she interrupts. "I want to go."

He nods, looking down. "Yeah, okay."

She discreetly grabs two ear pieces and leaves him to work on the suit, worried by his state of mind. He's so stressed — it's obvious — and he feels guilty for driving Pepper away and the whole fight that's broken out, even if the latter wasn't entirely his fault. He just wants to keep people safe, which Grace saw on further reflection. It's why he built Ultron — and his suits. But none of it worked out the way he wanted it to, and he had to fix it.

Just like Grace had to fix her family.

Peter's sure he's never been more excited about something in his whole life as he puts on the new Spider-Man suit Tony made him. He loves it so much, he starts to text Grace — who's been texting him ever since she got to Berlin with her dad — but there's no time.

Happy hurriedly takes him to Tony, who, surprisingly, is alone.

"He-Hey, Mr. Stark," Peter says.

"Hey, kid," Tony replies, smiling a little. "I got a couple things I need to go over with you, alright?"

"Yeah, okay," Peter says, all ears, ready to hang onto Tony's every word.

"First off," he says, "you're not gonna be seen when we first get there. Just wait for me to say..." he thinks for a second "...'Underoos,' or something and then flip in or whatever it is you want to do."

Peter's brows furrow. "Underoos?"

"Yeah, that's what I said," Tony replies. "Anyway, during the fight, I need you to keep your distance and just web 'em up. Also, you're gonna end up fighting Cap, and he's gonna tell you something about how you 'don't understand' everything that's going on. But all you need to understand is that he's wrong, but he thinks he's right, and that makes him dangerous." Peter nods, then Tony adds, "Oh, also — go for his legs."

"Got it," Peter says, nodding.

"There's just... one more thing..." Tony sighs. "Grace is going to be in this fight."

Peter starts to say, 'I know,' but thinks better of it and just nods again, to show he's listening.

Tony continues. "I don't think anyone on Cap's team would even think about fighting her — not even Barnes, when he's... well, himself. But... just in case, I need you to help me keep an eye on her, okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, of course," Peter says. It should be easy to do with her plan, anyway.

"I mean, she's got an AI in her suit that'll get her out of there if it goes south, but, you know... just in case."

"I got it," Peter says. He lists off everything Tony just told him. "Come in on, 'Underoos,' Cap is wrong, go for his legs, and keep Grace safe."

Tony smiles and claps him on the shoulder. "Gold star, kid. You passed the quiz with flying colors."

They evacuate the entire airport when they get there — Tony, Nat, Vision, Rhodey, King T'Challa, Grace, and Peter.

When she gets a free moment, Grace gives Peter an earpiece after making sure they won't be seen or heard. "I fixed this and the one in my ear so that we can talk to each other without the rest of the team hearing." Talking to each person individually seems to be the best course of action instead of a full-out argument breaking out over comms with everyone hearing what she has to say at once. Divide and conquer, basically.

"But can we still hear them?" Peter asks, putting the ear piece in anyway. "And can we still talk to them?"

Grace nods. "Yeah. When you want to just talk to me, press the button on the side and hold it down until you're done talking. Got it?"

He nods. "Got it." Then, he stops. "When did you have time to do this? How did you-?"

Grace playfully rolls her eyes. "I'm shut up at home all day, Parker. I don't have much else to do."

They quickly rejoin the rest of the group, Tony explaining the dramatic entrance he wants to make. Nat looks over at Grace and raises a brow, nodding over at Peter. She must've seen them whispering to each other. Grace just playfully rolls her eyes at her, though she is blushing. Peter notices none of this.

Tony has Grace and Rhodey with him, so they all part ways. Not long after, from their high position, Grace, Rhodey, and Tony see Steve running for a helicopter. Tony fires a small missile at it and it sparks, rendering it useless. Then, he takes off, so Rhodey and Grace follow. They land in front of the helicopter, facing Steve. Grace's helmet is up.

"Wow, it's so weird how you run into people at the airport," Tony says. He looks at Rhodey. "Don't you think that's weird?"

"Definitely weird," Rhodey replies.

But Steve, after glancing at Grace in disbelief, is having none of this small talk. "Hear me out, Tony. That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this."

Then, T'Challa leaps over a large trailer and lands, looking at Steve. "Captain."

Steve nods at him. "Your highness."

"Anyway, Ross gave me 36 hours to bring you in," Tony says. "That was 24 hours ago. Can you help a brother out?"

"You're after the wrong guy."

"Your judgment is askew... Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday."

"And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't."

Then, Natasha steps in, slightly behind him. "Steve... you know what's about to happen. Do you really wanna punch your way out of this one?"

Tony sighs. "Alright, I've run out of patience. Underoos!"

Peter flips in, shooting a web at Cap's shield midair and taking it, landing on top of the trailer. It's only then that Grace realizes Peter webbed Cap's hands together in the process.

Tony's impressed. "Nice job, kid."

"Thanks," Peter replies. "Well, I could've stuck the landing a little better. It's just the new suit- Well, it's nothing, Mr. Stark. It's-It's perfect. Thank you."

Despite herself, Grace chuckles. Tony says, "Yeah, we don't really need to start a conversation."

"Okay." Peter salutes awkwardly. "Cap-  Captain. Big fan. I-I'm Spider-Man."

Tony sighs. "Yeah, we'll talk about it later. Just-"

"Hey, everyone."

"Good job."

Steve is smirking a little. "You've been busy."

Tony turns on him. "And you've been a complete idiot. Dragging in Clint. 'Rescuing' Wanda from a place she doesn't even want to leave — a safe place. I'm trying to... I'm trying to keep you from tearing the Avengers apart."

"You did that when you signed," Steve replies coldly. Grace's heart sinks, but she reminds herself that there's still time. She has her plan.

Tony shakes his head in disbelief and anger. "Alright, we're done. You're gonna turn Barnes over, and you're gonna come with us. Now! Because it's us or a squad of J-SOC guys with no compunction about being impolite." Steve doesn't answer. After a pause, he raises his hands, and an arrow shoots through the air, then cuts the web apart. Everyone looks at where it came from, searching for Clint.

"Alright, Lang," Steve says.

"Guys, something-" Peter starts. He's interrupted by a man growing in front of him, punching him in the face, knocking him over, and then taking the shield. Grace steps towards Peter.

Sai, sensing her worry, says, "He's alright; I scanned him for injuries." Peter gets to his feet, then.

"What the heck was that?" Rhodey says.

The weird guy, who's wearing a weird red and silver suit, runs over and hands the shield to Steve. "I believe this is yours, Captain America."

"Oh, great," Tony deadpans. "Alright, there's two on the parking deck. One of them's Maximoff, I'm gonna grab her. Rhodey, you want to take Cap?"

"Got two in the terminal, Wilson and Barnes," Rhodey replies.

"Barnes is mine!" T'Challa shouts, running off.

"Hey, Mr. Stark, what should I do?" Peter asks. Grace figures it's just to make the fact that they have a plan less obvious.

"What we discussed," Tony replies. "Keep your distance. Web 'em up."

"Okay, copy that!" He nods at Grace, then swings off the trailer, seemingly heading for Sam and Bucky, seeing as Steve has decided to fight T'Challa. Grace decides to give Peter some time and heads for someone else.

She sees Nat fighting with the weird guy and knows she can't help her fight him as he keeps growing and shrinking, and blasting him would probably result in her missing and hitting someone she doesn't want to.

She wants to run for Wanda and Clint, but Tony is already hot on their heels. She sighs, her helmet receding into the suit, and she presses the button on her earpiece. "Peter, you better hurry it up with Sam and Bucky. I'm heading over."

There's no response for a while, then, finally, a hurried, "Got it!"

By the time Grace enters the terminal, following the sound of bangs, crashes, and voices, Peter is perched on top of some sort of ticket station, looking at Sam and Bucky, who've been webbed to the floor. "Guys, look, I'd love to keep this up, but I've only got two jobs here today, and I really need to help Gr- Savior and impress Mr. Stark, so-"

And then Redwing comes crashing through a window and drags Peter off. Grace eyes widen and she presses on her earpiece. "Peter?!"

"I'm okay!" he replies. "I'll let you know when I've got somebody else for you to talk to!"

"Okay," she says, then running over to Sam and Bucky, hardly bothering to catch her breath before she speaks. "Hey, Sam." She looks at Bucky. "Um, hi, I'm Grace. Nice to... meet you, I guess."

Bucky looks at her, straining to lift his head against the webs. "You're Stark's daughter?"

"Yeah."

He lets his head fall back again and snorts. "I'm sorry."

"Sometimes, I am too," Grace replies.

"Look," Sam cuts in, "I know we're on different sides here, but, please, can you get us out of this?"

Grace grimaces. "Yeah, no, I don't think so. Pe- Spider-Man did exactly what I needed him to do here; you can't run away to avoid listening to me now."

Sam's brows furrow; he'd hardly been paying attention to what Peter was saying as he'd been secretly manipulating Redwing. "What do you mean?"

"I need to talk to you." Grace looks at Bucky again. "Both of you."

"About?" Bucky asks interestedly, looking at her again.

She hesitates a moment, trying to figure out how to word everything. Then, she sighs. "Look, you guys are Steve's closest friends, so if he's going to listen to anybody, it's you two. Which is why I need you to go and convince him to stop the fighting and talk to my dad-"

"Grace-" Sam starts, but she won't let him finish.

"They can work out a compromise. If they just sit down and talk like mature adults, we can fix all of this." She looks at Bucky. "Steve said you weren't responsible for the bombing. Sit down with my dad and explain everything."

Sam sighs. "Grace, that won't work."

"Why not?" she asks. Sam and Bucky are her best shot at convincing Steve.

"He won't do it. There's too much at stake," Sam replies. "And what makes you think your dad will listen?"

"I-" Grace starts. She doesn't know. "I... I'll make him listen."

"You couldn't before." He quickly adds, "Which is all on him. He should've listened; you were right-"

"Then why didn't anyone else listen?" she replies angrily. "Why didn't you? Or Steve? Or anybody else in that room that heard me? No one even said anything but Dad."

"Grace-"

"And now look where we are."

Sam sighs. "I'm sorry. But you're grasping at straws here, Grace. It's too late."

Grace looks at Bucky, but he just looks guilty, not knowing what to say. She turns back to Sam. "How do you know if you won't try?"

He sighs. "There's no use in trying-"

Grace stops and turns away. "Yeah, whatever. Thanks for nothing." She runs off, pressing the button on her earpiece. "That was a bust. Where are you now?"
