Forty Eight
When they land at the airport, Tony is there, sitting in a car that Grace gets in while waiting for Peter and Happy, who are at the baggage claim.
Tony and Grace hug tightly, Grace smiling in relief. Any animosity towards him that was left in her is gone now. She's just happy that he's safe and that it's over.
And, seeing how happy and relieved she is, Tony can't tell her what happened. Not yet.
"Why don't you climb in the passenger's side?" Tony says. "I wanna talk to Peter."
So they get out and then back in the car, and then Happy and Peter arrive. Happy drives off, heading for Peter's apartment building.
They're all quiet for a while, Grace trying to steal glances at Peter through the rear view mirror. He would be doing the same to her if her father wasn't sitting right next to him.
So, instead, he decides to the finish off the little video diary he's been filming throughout the whole trip.
"What are you doing, a little video diary?" Tony asks, seeing the phone in his hand. Then, Grace just turns in her seat to look at them both.
Peter sounds embarrassed. "Yeah."
Tony shrugs. "It's all right. I'd probably do the same."
"I told him not to do it. He was filming everything," Happy butts in. Grace is surprised; she didn't notice it at all. He never told her, either.
"It's okay," Tony replies.
"I'm gonna wipe the chip," Happy says.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. You know what? We should actually- We should make an alibi video for your aunt anyway," Tony says. "You ready?" He takes off his sunglasses.
"Yeah, hold on." Peter lifts the phone.
"We rolling? Get in the frame."
"Okay." Peter does so.
Tony smiles at the camera. "Hey, May. How you doing? My gosh, uh, I just wanted to tell you what an incredible job your nephew did this weekend at the Stark Internship Retreat. Everyone was impressed. He and Grace had a lot of fun."
And then Happy lays on the horn. "Come on! It's a freaking merge!"
"This is because you're not on Queens Boulevard," Tony says to him. He turns back to the camera. "See, Happy is... He's hoping to get bumped up to asset management. He was forehead of security, and before that, he was just a driver."
"That was a private conversation," Happy says. "I don't like joking about this. It was hard for me to talk to you about that."
"No, seriously, was he snoring a bunch?" Tony asks Peter.
Before Peter can answer, Happy slams on the brakes. "Alright. Here we are. End of the line."
"Happy, can you give us a moment?" Tony says. "Grace, you're good, you just stay put."
"You want me to leave the car?" Happy asks.
"Why don't you grab Peter's stuff and his case out of the trunk."
Peter lowers his phone, in shock. "I can keep the suit?"
"Yeah," Tony replies. He puts his sunglasses back on. "Do me a favor, though. Happy's kind of your point guy on this. Don't stress him out. Don't do anything stupid. I've seen his cardiogram. All right?"
Peter nods. "Yes."
"Don't do anything I would do, and definitely don't do anything I wouldn't do. There's a little grey area in there, and that's where you operate."
"Wait, does that mean that I'm an Avenger-?"
"No."
"I'm not either, Pete. Don't stress it," Grace says.
Peter smiles at her, but Happy knocks on the window before he can reply. He's holding up a case. "This it?"
"Seventh floor," Tony says.
Peter shakes his head. "I can take that. You don't have to take it."
"You're gonna take it?" Happy asks.
"Yeah, I can take that."
"Thank you."
Happy puts the case and Peter's suitcase down and starts to get back in the car, then Peter turns to Tony. "So when's- when's our next- when's our next 'retreat,' you know? Like-"
"What, next mission?" Tony says.
Peter nods. "Yeah, the mission. The missions."
"We'll call you."
"Do you have my numbers...?"
"No, I mean, we'll call you. Like, someone will call you," Tony replies. Peter glances over at Grace, secretly hoping it'll be her.
"Oh," he says.
"Okay." Tony reaches across Peter, his hand grabbing the door handle. But Peter brings his arm up, hugging Tony. "It's not a hug," Tony says. "I'm just grabbing the door for you. We're not there yet."
"Oh," Peter repeats, his face red. He starts to get out of the car, then turns back. "Uh, bye."
"Bye," Tony says.
Peter looks at Grace. "B-Bye, Grace..."
She smiles at him. "Bye, Peter." He gets out of the car, which promptly takes off, and Grace looks at her father. "That was so a hug, Dad."
He shakes his head. "No, it wasn't."
Grace turns back in her seat, smiling and mumbling, "Yeah, it was."

Not long after that, Tony told her what happened — what Bucky did. How Steve knew this whole time and said nothing.
It hurt Grace at first. Remembering what she saw on that stage at MIT and the pictures Tony's showed her. What she lost.
She's often wondered what life would be like if they were still alive. Would Howard treat her differently than he treated Tony? Would Maria have sang to her when she was little, taught her how to play piano? Would she have been sent to them instead of with Pepper or Happy whenever Tony thought things were getting too dangerous?
There was no way of knowing. Bucky had taken that from them.
But she reminded herself that it wasn't really Bucky. From the way she understood it, he was brainwashed. A mindless machine that Hydra created to do its bidding. That wasn't the man webbed to the floor next to Sam in that airport, who's voice sounded like he really was going to listen to what she had to say, who looked like he felt like crap because he thought everything was his fault. That wasn't the man Steve risked everything for.
And Steve.
Steve had next to no excuse, didn't he? Yeah, it'd be a difficult conversation to have, but had he already told Tony, the fight they had wouldn't have happened. Zemo's plan never would've worked the way it did. Still... how would you even begin to tell somebody that, knowing it'll only hurt the both of you?
It's all too late, though. It seems as though it always is.
Grace sighs, pushing her thoughts away as her father parks the car in front of the compound. Inside are Rhodey and Vision. That's all.
When they walk in, Grace spots Vision sitting on the couch, a chessboard in front of him. He's playing with one of the pieces. No one is playing with him.
He looks sad. Regretful.
Grace walks over to him. "Hey, Vis."
He attempts to smile at her, but it doesn't work. "Hello, small one."
She gestures to the chess board. "You wanna play? I never really have before, but-"
He shakes his head. "No, that's alright. You better go and see Colonel Rhodes."
Grace nods and walks off, finding Rhodey and her father in a large training area. There are bars set up, and Rhodey is walking next to one, one hand resting on it, wearing the robotic legs Tony developed for him. To help him walk again. Tony is walking next to him, Rhodey's other hand on his shoulder.
He sees Grace. "Hey, mini Stark."
"Hey, Rhodey."
Tony looks at him. "Give me some feedback, anything you can think of. Shock absorption, lateral movement." He pauses. "Cup holder?"
"You may want to think about some AC down in-" But he gets to the end of the bar and falls forward, hitting the ground.
Grace darts forward while Tony crouches next to him. "Here, I'll-" Tony starts.
"No. Don't help me," Rhodey says. He breathes for a second, then turns himself over to sit down. He pauses for a long time. Grace sinks down and crouches in front of him. He looks at her. "One hundred and thirty eight," he says. "One hundred and thirty eight combat missions. That's how many I've flown. Every one of them could've been my last, but I flew 'em. Because the fight needed to be fought." Then, he looks at Tony. "It's the same thing with these Accords. I signed because it was the right thing to do...
"And, yeah, this sucks. It really sucks. This is a bad beat... But it hasn't changed my mind... I don't think." He smiles a little.
Grace reaches out and grabs his hand. Tony grabs his other one, and, together, they both help him to his feet. "You okay?" Tony asks. Rhodey nods.
And then a Fed Ex guy knocks on the window. Tony looks at him, and the guy asks, "Are you Tony Stank?"
Grace busts out laughing, despite the fact that this is a security breach and that man has no business actually seeing her. Rhodey nods. "Yes, this is Tony Stank." He points at Tony. "You're in the right place. Thank you for that!" He turns and walks down the bar in the other direction. "Never dropping that, by the way. 'Table for one, Mr. Stank — please, by the bathroom.'"
Grace laughs even harder, and Tony looks at her, laughing too. "You know that's your last name too, right?"
"You had to ruin it, didn't you?" she replies, still laughing.
Tony goes out and grabs the package, then Grace watches him open it over his shoulder when he comes back in. Inside is a letter, with his name written on it. He opens it, and Grace sees Steve's name signed on it. "What does it say?" she asks.
"Hold on," he says. After a few moments, once he's done reading it, he hands it to her. It says:
'Tony, I'm glad you're back at the compound. I don't like the idea of you and Grace rattling around a mansion by yourself, especially since you two don't seem to be getting along right now. We all need family. The Avengers and Grace are yours, probably more so than mine. I've been on my own since I was eighteen. I never really fit in anywhere, even in the army. My faith is in people, I guess. Individuals. And I'm happy to say that, for the most part, they haven't let me down. Which is why I can't let them down either. Locks can be replaced, but maybe they shouldn't. I know I hurt you, Tony — and Grace. I guess I thought by not telling you about your parents I was sparing you, but I can see now that I was really sparing myself, and I'm sorry. To both of you. Hopefully one day you can understand. I wish we agreed on the Accords, I really do. I know you're doing what you believe in, and that's all any of us can do. That's all any of us should. So, no matter what, I promise you, if you need us — if you need me — I'll be there.'
Friday tells Tony that there's a breach at the prison where Cap's team is being held. Ross is calling about it. Tony answers him, then says, "Please hold."
"No, don't-" Ross starts. But he doesn't finish.
Tony smiles at Grace, then sits back, looking at the phone. "I like to watch the light blink."
She notices another phone in his hand. "What's that?"
"Part two of Cap's package," Tony replies, looking at it. "For just in case."
"Are you ever gonna use it?" she asks.
Tony looks at her, thinking. "I hope it never gets bad enough that I have to."
Grace sighs. "I hope so too."
