Eighty Six

They're all in the conference room, projected screens displaying each of the Stones at the front of the room, where Steve and Tony are standing. Everyone else — Rhodey, Nat, Nebula, Rocket, Bruce, Clint, and Grace — is sitting at the table or in the chairs against the wall. Grace is at the table, in between Rhodey and Nat.

"Okay, so the 'how' works," Steve says. "Now we gotta figure out the when and the where. Almost all of us have had an encounter with at least one of the six Infinity Stones."

"Well, I'd substitute the word encounter for well near been killed by one of the six Infinity Stones," Tony corrects.

"I haven't," Scott interjects. "I don't even know what you're all talking about."

"Regardless, we only have enough Pym Particles for one round trip each — minus one — and these stones have been in a lot of different places throughout history," Bruce says.

"Our history," Tony adds. "So, not a lot of convenient spots to just drop in."

"Which means we have to pick our targets," Clint says.

"Correct."

"Let's start with the Aether." Steve turns to Thor. "Thor, what do you know?"

Thor, however, doesn't seem to be listening. He's laid back, his eyes closed. Grace almost expects to hear snoring.

"Is he asleep?" Nat asks.

"No, no. I'm pretty sure he's dead," Rhodey says, and Grace gives him a reproachful look before getting up and shaking Thor awake gently.

He's confused at first. "Wh-What?"

"We're talking about the Infinity Stones so we can go into the past and get them. You know about the Aether, so..."

He gets up. "Ah, yes right, right." He walks to the front of the room while Grace sits back down, watching as the screen projects the Aether — aka the Reality Stone. Thor clears his throat. "Uh, where to start? Um... The Aether, first, is not a stone — someone called it a stone before. Um, it's more of a... an angry sludge sort of a thing, so someone's gonna need to amend that and stop saying that...

"Here's an interesting story, though, about the Aether: My grandfather, many years ago, had to hide the stone from the Dark Elves." He moves his hands as if telling children about ghosts. "Oo, scary beings. So Jane, actually-" he turns and sees a picture of her on the screen behind him "-oh, there she is. Yeah, so Jane was a- an old flame of mine." He smiles at this. "Uh, you know, she stuck her hand inside a rock this one time and- and then the Aether stuck itself inside her, and she became very, very sick, and so I had to take her to Asgard, which is where I'm from. And, uh, we had to try and fix her. We were dating at the time, you see, and I got to- got to introduce her to my- my mother-" his face falls, and he sounds as though he's going to cry "- who's dead, and um... oh, you know, Jane and I aren't even dating anymore, so... Yes, these things happen, though, you know? Nothing last forever. The only thing that-"

Tony steps forward, seeing that it's not going to get any better and Thor definitely needs a break. "Why don't you come sit down?"

Thor evades Tony's hands. "I'm not done yet. The only thing permanent in life is impermanence." He laughs at this.

Tony claps a little. "Awesome. Eggs? Breakfast?"

Thor shakes his head. "No. I'd like a Bloody Mary, thank you."

Grace gets up and walks over to him, while the others continue talking. "Thor?" she says quietly.

He turns to her. "Yes, child?"

"Not a child anymore, but I'll let that slide," she says. Then, she asks, "Are you... okay?"

He answers loudly. "Of course!"

"'Cause if you're not-"

"I'm good-"

"I'm here," Grace finishes.

Thor pats her on the shoulder. "Thank you, child."

Grace shakes her head. "Again, not a child anymore."

"You're still the youngest one here," Rocket pipes up, overhearing the end of the conversation.

Grace turns. "Thank you, Rocket, I appreciate the commentary."

"You're welcome," he says sarcastically.

Grace goes into the next room to get Thor a bottle of water, leaving the door open so she can hear as they continue researching the Aether and where exactly it was so that they could actually obtain it. They determine they'll have to get it from Jane, as it'll be easiest that way, and Thor volunteers immediately to do that himself. Multiple people ask if he's sure he wants to, but he declares that he does and then goes into the kitchen to get something other than water. Rocket volunteers to go with him.

Later, they're all eating Chinese take out, obtained by Nat and Clint, and Rocket is on the table, detailing the history of the Power Stone as he knows it, and the projections match what he's saying. "Quill said he stole the Power Stone from Morag."

"Is that a person?" Bruce asks.

"Morag's a planet," Rocket answers Bruce irritatedly. "Quill was a person."

"Like a planet?" Scott asks in excited surprise. "Like in outer space?"

Rockets turns to Scott and starts petting his head condescendingly. "Oh, look. It's like a little puppy, all happy and everything. Do you wanna go to space? You wanna go to space, puppy? I'll take you to space."

"You already said you were going with Thor," Grace points out.

Rocket turns. "Thank you, Grace, I appreciate the commentary."

She smiles. "You're welcome."

The next morning, Nebula starts in on the Soul Stone, the one she's most familiar with — or the one most familiar with it out of everyone there. Maybe both. "Thanos found the Soul Stone on Vormir."

"What is Vormir?" Nat asks, taking notes. Grace meanwhile, has had her helmet — Sai — recording everything to reference later if need be.

"A dominion of death, at the very center of Celestial existence," Nebula answers. "It's where... Thanos murdered my sister."

Everyone is silent for a long moment, unsure what to say. Finally, Scott quietly says, "Not it."

They move on to the Tesseract, which doubles as the Space Stone. Of course, they start at the Battle of New York, against Loki and the Chitauri, the first fight for the Avengers. Footage of the battle plays on the screens.

"How long did you fight these guys?" Rocket asks after watching for a moment.

"Uh..." Nat thinks. "About, uh, two or three hours."

"Hours?" Rocket says, surprised. "The Chitauri are the suckiest army in the galaxy. Why didn't you just blow up the mother ship?"

Steve looks down. "We, uh, we didn't know that was a thing..."

Rocket begins to laugh hysterically. "You didn't know that was a thing?!"

Unfortunately for him, Tony rises from his chair behind Rocket, the razor he'd been using to shave his increasingly unkempt beard in hand. He takes it to Rocket's head, right on the surface, cutting a few hairs down.

"Hey!" Rocket shouts, turning, and everyone laughs. He looks into the glass walls, a decent mirror in an emergency, fretting over his appearance for a moment. "That was not funny."

"It was a little funny," Grace replies.

Rocket turns to her. "You know, those bangs look like they need a real nice trim, and I bet I could find some scissors around here."

"If you could even reach my hair."

Rocket looks at her smirking face for one long moment, then says, "Just because it's clear to me that you've never been able to make that joke before, I'll let it slide."

The smirk is wiped off Grace's face, but she decides to let the banter drop off there, going back to the task at hand. "Let's just figure out the logistics of this one," she mutters, causing Rocket to laugh.

Later that night, after some actually go to bed and Tony and Nat are laying on the table, Grace and Bruce on the floor, they move on to the Time Stone, the green one. The one that reversed Vision's first death, allowing Thanos to kill him a second time. The thought of it still makes Grace sick.

They can't figure out where to get it, especially seeing as its guardian was very adamant about keeping it safe with him, at least until he gave it up to Thanos, as Tony said.

Finally, Nat says, "That Time Stone guy."

"Doctor Strange," Bruce offers.

"Yeah, what kind of doctor was he?"

"Ear-nose-throat meets rabbit-from-hat," Tony replies.

"Nice place in the village, though," Bruce says.

"Yeah, on Sullivan Street?" Tony asks.

Bruce thinks for a moment. "Hmm... Bleecker Street."

Nat stops. "Wait, he lived in New York?"

"No, he lived in Toronto-" Tony starts, but Bruce talks over him.

"Uh, yeah, on Bleecker and Sullivan," he says.

"Have you been listening to anything?" Tony argues.

"Guys," Nat interjects, "if you pick the right year, there are three Stones in New York."

Bruce sits up. "Shut the front door."

Later, with everyone in the conference room, there are projections up for each Stone and the amount of teams needs to acquire them all — three. One for New York, which has the Space, Mind, and Reality Stones (the Mind Stone being the stone in Loki's scepter). The second for Asgard, which has the Reality Stone. The third for space — specifically, Moran and Vormir — which has the Power and Soul Stones.

"Okay, so, three teams," Steve says. "How are we doing this?"

"Well, Thor and I are going to Asgard," Rocket says. "I'd say we're good to do that alone."

"We need at least four in the other two places. Two for Power, two for Soul, and then divide up the rest between the other three."

Grace looks at Tony. "I'm guessing I'm not going to space?"

"No, you're staying here," Tony says instantly.

Grace looks at him for a moment, while everyone else watches the exchange like a tennis match. "Here as in Earth or here as in this time?"

"This time," Tony replies.

"Dad-" she begins to argue, but he cuts her off.

"Somebody has to monitor things."

"I don't know the first thing about all that stuff," she retorts. "I can't read that equipment."

Tony shrugs. "You're smart, you can figure it out."

Bruce, a bit sheepishly, speaks up. "I mean, I do know it better than she does, and making a whole big suit for me might take some time-"

"Why are you encouraging this?" Tony asks suddenly.

Bruce holds up his hands in a disarming manner. "I'm just saying, Tony, I could stay back and she could go. You said it yourself — she's smart. She can even be on your team."

"Exactly," Grace says. "We can go to New York. It's not even space."

Tony is positively weary. "Grace-"

"Let me get the Time Stone," she says. "I just have to go get it from Strange. How dangerous could that be?"

Tony thinks, then sighs. "If you weren't as persuasive as you are, very."

Grace starts to argue, but then catches his wording. "So is that a yes?"

"It's a maybe."

"She can do it, Tony," Nat says. "I mean it. You didn't see her in Wakanda. If she can stand up to Thanos the way she did, she can stand up to Strange if need be."

Tony shakes his head. "You haven't met him."

"Is he worse than Thanos?" Nat challenges.

Tony sighs again. "Surprisingly, no."

"Then, okay," Steve says. "You and Grace are on Team New York. We need two more. More than one person is gonna need to get the Tesseract, and then we need to get the Mind Stone."

"I wish to get the Power Stone," Nebula pipes up.

"I'll go with her," Rhodey says, slightly raising his hand. "Space sounds cool."

Nat turns to Clint. "I'm willing to brave Vormir if you are."

He nods. "Alright, yeah. We'll do it. You and me."

"Looks like we're in New York then," Steve says to Scott, who nods. They all turn back to the projections, the logistics already discussed, already recorded and written down. Steve sighs. "Alright. We have a plan. Six Stones, three teams, one shot."

They quickly build the rest of the suits, Tony adding Sai to Grace's for his own peace of mind, and then that's it.

It's time.
