"You know, Finn, maybe you should ask Mr.Fells for a different partner...or maybe switch with Becca" Mia said, after I told her about the whole Romeo and Juliet charade that was going on between Colton and I.
I raised an eyebrow at her, questionably, before looking down at my 'We want YOU in newspaper committee!' flyer.
Mia shook her head "Ok, having Becca as his partner wouldn't really help anything" She admitted, realizing the flaw in her suggestion.
I nodded and sighed softly, "I just don't know what to do...I want to ask him what happened when I left and you know...about Becca' I said, briefly rolling my eyes at her name , "But I don't know when the right time to do that would be" I said.
She nodded thoughtfully, "Not that I've had much experience with this stuff, but I say go for it"
"Easier said than done" I said, "He hates me!" I laughed softly, frowning.
I hated being down about things and constantly complaining, but sometimes I just couldn't keep it all in.
"Hey, the worst that can happen is that he doesn't talk to you afterward. And it's not like he talks to you now, so if anything, you'll get something good out of it. I don't know...maybe clarification about stuff, or maybe he'll proclaim his hidden undying love for you- and he'll dump Becca's ass" she said, nonchalantly.
I let out a huge laugh, "Oh definitely! And then Becca will turn into a frog and we'll live happily ever after!" I said sarcastically.
Mia laughed, "Hey, you never know" she said.
At that point, the rest of the classroom had filled up with some other students who were a part of the newspaper committee.
Mr.Fells was the sponsor, and the club met on Friday after school...which was today.
We stopped laughing when Mr.Fells stood up in front of the group of kids.
"Welcome everyone to the first meeting of the newspaper committee this year! We have a new member, Finnly Cage" he said, directing his attention to me.
I gave a small wave to the rest of the class, before Mr.Fells continued
"Last year the newspaper was run under the ground due to the poor leadership skills of the previous president and vice president, so until I decide, I will be in charge for the time being" he said, shuffling through some papers.
"Tonight, because it is the day of the first football game of the season, there are perfect opportunities for the newspaper committee to really hit the ground running! So, does anyone have any good ideas?" he asked.
Evan, also a member, raised his hand before speaking "What if we interview some of the football players? Maybe ask them about their predictions for the season?" he suggested.
Mr.Fells nodded, opening the floor for more people to contribute their opinions.
"On top of Evan's idea, we can also ask the football players personal questions? Maybe get the school to have the chance to get to know them better?" Mia added.
Some people murmured agreement, while I sat back in my desk, arms crossed.
All of this wouldn't be an issue for me if Colton wasn't the star quarterback.
"How about you, Finnly?" he asked, raising an eyebrow questionably.
I straightened up in my chair, feeling everyone's eyes on me.
"That's a great idea" I said, "But I think we should ask the student body their opinions on the football game...to branch out" I offered kind of weakly.
In all honesty, I just really didn't want to interview Colton or any of his friends. I'd talk to all the druggies before I actually interviewed any of the football players.
"What would you ask the students?" Mr.Fells asked, crossing his arms in obvious disappointment.
I opened my mouth to respond, but Mia beat me to it.
"Well I think what she means is ask the student body about the football players- their opinions on them and their hopes for the team. It would be good to get a little bit of gossip into the paper- people would want to read that" She said, matter-a-factly.
Mr.Fells started nodding very slowly, "I see, very well you two" he said.
I smiled to Mia in thanks. Obviously she had sensed my struggle.
Mr.Fells continued talking and eventually assigned us all subjects to work with tonight at the game.
I walked away somewhat satisfied with my job to take pictures and interview a range of students on their opinions toward the team.
Good. No talking to Colton.
~*~*~*~
"Finnly! Come on! You act as if you've never been to a football game before!" Anna groaned, dragging me into the stadium.
I pursed my lips, tightly holding onto the camera hanging around my neck, "I have! I swear" I said, "But Netflix is calling my name" I drawled dramatically.
Anna rolled her eyes, "Are you sure you just don't want to be here because of Colton?" she asked slyly.
Mia laughed, "Yeah, are you sure?" she added on.
I gave them both a death glare , "Seriously guys, can we get over that? That was three years ago." I said, "And I seriously just don't want to talk about him ever again".
"Goodluck with that" Anna said, smirking.
We entered the stadium and paid for our tickets, walking past the mob of kids. The stadium lights were on, although it wasn't dark yet, and the band had already begun playing. Various kids from Riverwood, the opposing team, starting filling into the visiting side of bleachers.
"Hey guys, I'll talk to you later! Kyle is here!" Mia said, as Kyle started walking toward us.
I had to give it to her, he was pretty good looking.
She dashed off with him and I watched them go, a small feeling of loneliness lingering in their wake.
I turned around to say something to Anna, but she was gone.
Dammit. Now I looked like a freaking loser.
I let out a small moan and walked toward the bleachers, glancing over at the field, finding myself looking for Colton.
I spotted him and sucked in my breath softly.
God he looked good in the football uniform. He had his helmet off and ran his hand through his hair, sending chills down my spine.
Hell. Get a hold of yourself. He's been nothing but rude to you. He's not worth it...
Although his is incredibly hot.
I tossed the last thought out of my mind before climbing the bleacher steps, toward a group of kids sitting at the top.
They looked approachable enough. One of the girls had a pink streak in her hair, giving me the impression she was creative and an artsy kind of person, and another had long black hair tied back into a braid.
Good, they probably wouldn't mind doing an interview.
"Hey! I'm Finnly Cage and I'm in the newspaper committee! Would you mind doing an interview?" I asked them politely, still holding onto my camera.
The girl with the purple streak looked over at her friend briefly before nodding, "Yeah sure" she said.
I smiled, "Thanks!" I said, sitting down next to them.
"This will only take a minute" I promised, both of them responding with nods.
"So, what are your opinions on the football team?" I asked, pressing the record button on my phone.
The girl with the purple streak looked down at my phone before responding, "Uh other than the quarterback being really hot?" she laughed, "nothing much" she said honestly.
I faked a laugh. No matter how hard I try to stay away from him, he still pops up everywhere.
"The whole team is really good. Considering they're all upperclassmen, I think we'll do well this year" the girl with the black hair said stiffly.
The girl with the purple streak nudged her friend, "That's boring! Say something interesting" she said, laughing.
The girl with the black hair loosened up a bit and continued , "Colton Pane, is so talented and of course the rest of the team is good, but I think he'll take us to state championships" she said , "I even heard he already got an offer to play at OSU"
Wow. I was actually impressed.
I turned the recording off and stood up, offering them a smile , "Thanks so much!" I said , "Make sure to look for the first issue of the newspaper" I said cheerfully.
They nodded, smiling back , "The comments are going to be anonomous ,right?" the girl with the purple streak asked , "I just don't want Becca coming after me with murderous intentions" she laughed
I laughed, although in the inside I was actually starting to get scared. What if Becca found out I had compiled the comments and then came to torment me about Colton? Shit.
"Yeah, of course" I said, "wouldn't want that to happen" I laughed.
I started walking down the bleachers, and eventually found a spot next to Evan, deciding to sit down and watch the game.
"Excited for the game?" Evan asked when I sat down.
I shrugged , "yeah, something like that" I said, smiling, deciding to take a few picture of the field.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! Tonight the Palmbeach tigers will go head to head with the Riverwood otters!" The announcer said through a speaker, getting the whole stadium to turn their heads toward the field.
"We eat otters for breakfast!" someone further down in the bleachers shouted.
I couldn't help but laugh. Some people seriously got too into this.
"This year's star player form Palm Beach High school is Colton Pane! He'll be calling the coin toss for the tigers! And Rafael King will call for the otters!"
Colton and the other boy walked to the middle of the field, and the jumbo tron above the score board showed the whole thing.
Maybe they should spend less money on jumbo trons and more money on good teachers to replace Mr.Fells.
The game started with Riverwood, and kickoff began.
Throughout the first quarter I was really starting to doubt our team, but after halftime Colton started scoring touchdown after touchdown, causing the whole Palm Beach side of the stadium to roar and cheer.
I felt myself cheering too and yelling "Colton!" with everyone else.
The game ended with a home win at 42-14. Atleast my Friday night wasn't completely wasted.
I started walking down the bleachers, looking for Anna and Mia.
I eventually got down to the ground, moving over to the field where a huge group of kids were congratulating the team.
While trying to spot Anna, I bumped into someone, accidently knocking them to the ground.
"I'm so sorry! I should've been looking where I was going! I-"
You have got to be shitting me.
Becca stood up quickly, brushing herself off , "Of course it's you! This was a new shirt and everything! Now it's ruined because of you!" She said, gesturing toward her obviously not damaged shirt.
"Your shirt looks fine" I said, crossing my arms.
What a freaking drama queen.
Becca narrowed her eyes and I was ultimately saved when Anna called over to me, "Finn!"
I turned my head to yell back to her, "Be there in a mi-"
Icecubes hit my face and a horrible slushy liquid splashed all over my face.
I turned back to Becca, holding an empty cup in her hand, "I honestly don't see whatever Colton use to like about you. There's nothing to like" she sneered, throwing her cup to the ground before running over to the field to meet Colton.
I stood there stunned, looking after her, my mouth wide open and my fists curled with anger.
Did she really go there? I didn't mean to bump into her! It was a complete accident!
"Finnly! Oh my god! What happened to you?!" Anna asked, taking my camera to start cleaning it off.
"Do I really need to answer that?" I asked, shooting daggers in Becca's back.
Anna handed me my cleaned camera back, "That's it. Operation 'kick Becca's slutty ass' is in effective....immediately."
Damn right it is.
