"Wow, you really do have nothing to wear" Anna said, scrunching her nose up in distaste as she closed my closet door.
I sighed, "I could wear the dress I worse to homecoming" I said, shrugging.
Anna gave me a look of disapproval and put her hands on her hips, "No" she said, "You don't re wear dresses for these kind of things"
I flopped back on my bed, "Then I don't know" I said, "Can't I just wear a sweater or something to Max's New Year's Eve Party?" I asked.
It was New Year's Eve, and I was more than happy to finally have a break from my parents for a while. My mother's presence wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be, but It was still well beyond awkward, especially when Kim brought up the wedding the other night.
Anna and I were in the process of getting ready. It was more like I was in the process of getting ready; Anna was already decked out in her purple peplum shirt and black skirt. For the past hour Anna had been trying to salvage something from my apparently 'disgraceful' closet without any luck.
Anna shook her head 'no' , "I will not let you go to a party wearing a sweater" she said.
I threw my hands up in the air, "I got like 3 for Christmas!" I said, "I'd wear a dress if I had one"
As if on cue, my mother came into my bedroom holding a short red dress, "So Kim and your father told me you two were headed to Max's party tonight and It totally dawned on me that I forgot to give this to you on Christmas" she said, sporting a huge smile.
I smiled at her, getting up from my bed, "It's beautiful!" I said, running the fabric through my hands. It was like some clothing genie had granted my wish of wanting something to wear- and it was amazing.
"I got in a boutique in Paris" she said, handing me the dress, "I thought it would look great on you"
I smiled again and gave her a hug, "Thank you so much, Mom" I said.
"Yeah really, this could not have come at a better time" Anna said
My mother laughed, "Yeah I could hear your dramatics all the way from down stairs" she said
Anna shrugged, "Everyone usually gets use to it" she joked.
My mother laughed again, "Well, has a good time at the party girls" she said, before heading back downstairs.
Maybe my mother hadn't completely forgotten about me while she was in Paris. I mean, if she had put that much thought in buying me a dress- something she has never done before she had moved- it must mean something.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Anna asked enthusiastically, "Try it on!" she said.
Anna looked away while I changed and once it was on, I couldn't stop smiling. It looked amazing and more important than anything, I actually felt beautiful.
"Woah! Max will not be able to keep his eyes off you wearing that dress!" Anna said, gasping when she saw it.
I blushed at the thought of Max thinking I looked pretty. It wasn't something I had heard any guy say before, so it would literally make me melt if he mentioned such a thing.
"C'mon Finn! Put on these shoes" Anna said, tossing me a pair of gold heels, "and let's go partayy!"
"Ok, ok!" I said, sliding the shoes on as quickly as I could.
Once I had tightened the straps on both the heels, Anna bolted downstairs, unable to wait any longer.
I took one last look of myself in the mirror, smiling to myself, before following her.
I could already feel it. Tonight was going to be a good night.
~*~*~*~
"There are so many people here!" Anna said loudly, trying to speak over the sound of the blaring music.
I nodded, surprised there were as many people here as there was. Although a lot of people had been invited, I hadn't expected almost the entire population of both Palm Beach and Riverwood to show up.
Luckily, Max's house was a level above 'mansion'. There was definitely plenty of room for everyone and from the looks of it- we hadn't even seen a fraction of the people here.
I surveyed the front room; noticing Max's dad signing autographs in the corner and the huge flat screen tv displaying times square in the other, with multiple kids dancing in the middle.
Anna and I weaved our way through the crowd and I tried my best to avoid any of the 'drunken' kids. Max had told me previously that there would be no alcohol but that he'd told everyone the punch was spiked so he'd have more people show up. It was honestly quite pathetic to see people act tipsy.
"Where is your lover boy?" Anna asked, scanning the room.
I smirked, "Here comes your lover boy" I said, nodding toward Evan who was making his way toward us.
"Evan!" Anna said, dashing over to him.
I laughed softly, continuing to make my way to the hallway, hoping I could find Max.
I rounded another corner, coming across a room filled with tables of food. It seriously looked like Max put a lot of effort into planning everything for this party.
And the more and more I thought about him I realized I wanted more than anything right now to see him.
I grabbed a cookie and took a bite out of it before taking the steps down to the basement.
"Becca, can't you just break up with him? I'm sick of hiding. If you don't like him anymore than why can't we just make 'us' official?"
I attention snapped to the pair of voices coming from the closet at the base of the stairs. The music was faint and no one appeared to be down here except for the two people hiding out in the closet.
"Just kiss me," Becca said, and I cringed when I heard them making out. I was about to go back upstairs when I heard the guy again, "Becca, I'm serious. I'm tired of doing this in secret."
"Fine, Avery," she said, "I'll end things with Colton when I see him tomorrow" she said impatiently, "Now, take off your shirt already," she demanded.
My eyes widened as I remembered the guy from homecoming and I sprinted back up the stairs. I wasn't interested in hearing what they did next.
Once away from them I actually processed the idea that Becca was cheating on Colton. For how long had it been happening? How long had Colton been strung along? Regardless, I didn't feel bad for him one bit. He had it coming.
"Oh thank goodness we found you! All those people in there are creeps!" Anna said, towing Evan behind her.
I laughed, "Hey Evan" I said, offering him a small wave.
Evan waved back, "Nice to see you, Finn" he said, "Have you seen your man tonight?" he asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Oh god, not you too" I said, giving him a playful smack on the arm.
Evan shrugged, "I feel like Anna is starting to rub off on me" he said in a dramatic hushed whisper.
"Hey, I heard that!" Anna said, putting on her best pouting face.
Evan gave her a quick kiss, "I meant that in a good way" he said reassuringly.
I laughed, before remembering what I had just seen only a couple minutes ago, "Guys, I just heard Becca downstairs and guess what?" I asked in a lowered voice.
Both of their eyes snapped toward me and I took that as my cue to continue, "She was with a Avery, that jerk from homecoming" I said.
"Ok, what do you mean with Avery?" Anna asked confused, "Like with him as in talking to him or with him as in doing the nasty?"
I contained a laugh as I saw Evan's eyes grow big with alarm, "With as in doing the nasty" I said, adding in a light cough.
At that Anna burst out laughing, "Oh this is just priceless!" she said, "Colton is going to be so furious when he finds out! Talk about karma being a bitch."
Evan let a sly smirk appear on his lips, "I really shouldn't be happy about this, but I really am" I said, "Colton was a huge ass, it was really about time he got some crap thrown in his face"
I smiled, "It makes all my pain worth it" I said simply.
Anna nodded, patting me on the shoulder, "What goes around comes around, honey" she said, "See? I told you everything would work out just fine"
I rolled my eyes, "Yes, I guess you did" I said.
"Lover boy 12 o'clock" Evan said softly, before grabbing Anna by the arm and disappearing from view.
They really were perfect for one another. I really couldn't think of anyone spunkier than Anna and I couldn't think of any guy sweeter than Evan...except for maybe Max...
"Finnly! I've been looking all over for you!"
A huge smile spread across my face when I recognized his voice and I couldn't help but blush, "I just got here a little while ago" I said.
I almost couldn't look at Max, he was just that attractive... his hair was tousled perfectly in a way that made me want to just run my hands through it forever, his white button down shirt was rolled up to his elbows, exposing his perfectly tanned arms, and his gorgeous eyes made me want to faint right there on the spot.
If Anna was here right now, I could only imagine her whistling in approval.
He smiled, "I'm really glad you could make it" he said, "I've gotten tired hanging out with fake drunks and my dad's fan club" he laughed.
I laughed with him, "I'm glad I could help" I said.
He smiled again, holding out his hand for me, "here, I have something to show you" he said.
I took his hand, feeling the heat rise in my cheeks as our fingers touched. A million thoughts flashed through my mind as he led me outside, across the porch and down a trail until we arrived at a bridge.
He let go of my hand to take something out of his pocket, "So I got you something for Christmas" he said.
A pit dropped in my stomach. I should've gotten him something. How could I have forgotten?! "Wait, Max...I didn't get you anything" I said, "I'm really sorry, it totally slipped my mind" I said, feeling incredibly guilty. I had been so busy with my mother coming into town and decorating the house I hadn't even bothered to do anything for him.
He shrugged, "Don't worry about it" he said, giving me one of his smiles that made my heart, "I'm sure you'll make it up to me somehow"
I laughed and nodded, "I will" I said, making a mental note to go out and get him something later.
"I hope you like it" he said, handing me a thin red box.
I gave him a smile before opening the lid slowly, trying not to bounce up and down in excitement.
"Oh Max, it's beautiful!" I said, holding up the sterling silver locket with 'Finnly' engraved on the front of it.
"Here, let me put it on" he said.
I lifted up my hair, blushing as his fingers brushed my skin. All I wanted to do right now was throw my arms around his neck and hug him forever.
When he was done I turned back around to face him, "I definitely have to make this up to you" I said.
Max laughed, "I was planning on staying out here until midnight, how about you stay with me?" he asked, shrugging.
"What, you don't want to be at your own party?" I teased.
Max laughed again, "Not really" he said, running his hand through his hair, biting his lip slightly.
I laughed, tossing my hair over my shoulder before sitting down on the bridge, "Fair enough, I'd rather stay here anyway".
