Monday morning I woke up to the sound of my alarm beeping.

Ugh,the first day of school.

My first day of school in a town I left 3 years ago, with Colton and all those people I had tried so hard to forget about.

The past couple days hadn't been too bad. It was actually good to spend more time with Anna and Kim. My dad had been at work the whole weekend. He worked in the local museum as one of the CEOs or something, and they had been facing some problems so I hadn't seen much of him since my first night here.

I had been dreading my first day 24/7 the past couple days. You never truly appreciate the summer until you go back and then you wish you had done more than sit on your ass and do shit.

I slammed my hand down on my alarm, letting out an exasperated sigh.

I mentally sent a prayer that today wouldn't be too horrible before I lazily rolled out of bed.

I thought about drawing my curtains to let in some light, but then I remembered.

Having Colton as a next door neighbor had more cons than pros at this point. You can go ahead and toss privacy out the window.

I left the curtains shut despite the darkness that concealed my room.

I made my way over to the light and turned it on before getting dressed.

I got dressed in a simple dress with a jean jacket and some flats. Normally I don't care about my school outfit; I usually just wake up late and throw on a pair of sweats. But I decided that since it was the first day of school at a new school, I should put a little bit of effort into my appearance.

I tamed my horrendous bed head before grabbing my book bag and running downstairs.

Anna was already in the kitchen when I got there.

"Hey Finn! Excited about your first day?" Anna asked.

I grabbed a piece of toast

"Oh yeah, super psyched" I said with a sarcastic edge "How about you? Excited about not being a freshman?" I teased.

She rolled her eyes "Yeah, you have no idea. You wouldn't believe the amount of pranks the seniors played on us. It was beyond stupid. freshman year sucked ass" She said

I laughed, "My freshmen year sucked ass too" I said

Freshman year pretty much sucks for everyone.

"So...are you ready to see Becca?" Anna asked awkwardly, shifting the conversation.

I shrugged, "I'd be lying if I said I was" I said.

After the whole scene a couple days ago when I first arrived, I had told Anna about how Becca and I use to be friends and her tendency to try to date as many guys as possible.

Anna had known Becca was dating Colton. She said they were the IT couple in the school and everyone knew them.

Anna's hatred for her hadn't started until I told her my past with her though.

I had told Anna that hating her really wasn't necessary, but Anna said it was a bitch move to date your best friend's crush.

I couldn't argue with her, but I wanted to start off this year right, and hating someone wasn't a good way to begin.

I didn't want to talk to her though. It would just be better if I made other friends. Even though it was a bitchy move, it was 3 years ago, and I really couldn't hang onto that.

That's what I had been telling myself lately.

Let go of the past.

Just let it go and move forward.

Easier said than done.

Knowing myself, I'd probably get super angry when I saw her and punch a locker or something.

So yeah, it was for the best if I didn't have to see her.

Shortly after Anna and I ate breakfast, we started on our walk to school.

Anna didn't have her license yet and I had obviously just moved here, so there wasn't car for us to take to school.

It was a little annoying considering the fact that it was freaking hot outside and I had to continuely hold my hands over my dress so it would've fly up and flash all the cars.

Thank you ,wind.

When we got to the entrance of the school grounds, I looked over at Anna

"Is it always this busy?" I asked, looking at the mob of cars in the parking lot and the hundreds of kids outside.

Anna shook her head , "Nah, it's just the first day." She said.

I nodded and we made our way to the front doors.

I glanced at some of the kids, trying to see if I remembered any of them. A few looked familiar, but If I have known any of the other kids during middle school, they went through some major puberty changes, because I didn't recognize them.

"Here, I'll take you to the front office. My mom already enrolled you, but the counselors need to give you your homeroom information and your locker combination" Anna said.

I responded by falling her through the mass of kids , down the hallway.

We arrived at the front office and the lady at the desk looked up at us

, "You must be Finnly. You're mother just enrolled you" She said in a monotone voice.

"Yes Mam" I said. 'But she's not my mother' I added to myself.

The lady did some shuffling through her draws and drew out a file

, "Ah, here we go. Follow this schedule during the day. You shouldn't have any problems. There are plenty of other new kids this year so don't be nervous" She added wirily, "Report to first period when the bell rings" She said, before handing me the file and turning back to her computer.

"Thanks" I said, before leaving the office, followed by Anna.

"You know, for having such an easy job, those front office ladies are pretty pissed off" Anna said.

I laughed, "Hey, it takes a long time for people to ease back in" I said.

"Yeah yeah, whatever, I-"

The bell rang cutting Anna off

"I go to go, but I'll see you during lunch! And hey, maybe you'll see Colton" Anna said, wiggling her eyebrows at me before dashing off down the hall.

I rolled my eyes but I felt my heart flutter at the mention of his name.

No.

Stop.

He's moved on.

He's dating Becca.

And if he's dating Becca, that says something about his character.

I glanced down at my schedule looking at my first class.

I started walking down the hall, read the numbers beside the different doors. I got lucky and found my room shortly after. Thank God it hadn't been on the opposite of the building, because I would've been late for sure.

And on my first day I can't afford that.

On my first day I couldn't afford to do anything wrong.

A couple of other kids filed into the room with me, and I made my way to the row near the window. I set my backpack down near the first desk and sat down, flattening my dress.

Different social circles were scattered around the room and people were talking amongst each other.

I took out my phone and started absentmindedly scrolling through my text messages, pretending I had some important messages to respond to.

I was actually starting to text one of my old friends when someone tapped me on the shoulder.

"Hey, is it okay If I sit here?" a quiet voice asked

I looked up and saw a girl pointing to the desk next to me.

"Yeah of course" I said. She looked so familiar; I knew I had known her.

Long black hair, brown eyes, the unusual pale skin in California...

"Wait...Mia?" I asked, a smile spreading.

Mia looked up at me, looking at me for a couple seconds.

"FINNLY?!" she said, a smile spreading across her face, "Oh my gosh! Why are you here? I mean, not that I'm upset that you're here, I'm just surprised." She said excitedly

"My mom sent me to live with my dad for my last year in high school" said, shrugging, "I haven't talked to you in forever, what's up?" I asked, smiling.

Mia smiled, "Nothing much. Seriously, nothing has changed for me much since eighth grade" she said

I laughed, "Still spending more time on social media than with people then?" I joked.

Mia laughed with me, "yeah, pretty much" she said.

To be honest I was pretty surprised how easily things picked up. I had been pretty sure Mia hadn't wanted to talk to me after I had moved. But from the way she was talking, she acted just as surprised as me that we hadn't talked in forever.

Nonetheless, I was just excited one aspect from my old life was the same.

"So, what's new around here" I asked, gesturing around me. I was curious if she would say anything about Colton or Becca.

She shrugged, "Nothing much" she said, looking down at her desk, "You know, the same old same old crap. Basically just a bunch of drama and gossip about the popular kids... but It's been a long time since I've actually cared." She laughed

I laughed with her. When I had first moved to New York, I thought popularity was the end all be all, but by sophomore year I actually realized that after high school no one would really give a crap and it wasn't worth the time worrying over.

I was about to respond to Mia and ask her if Becca and her were still friends, but the teacher came into the classroom and closed the door behind him, alerting the class.

The kids loitering around the room moved to their seats and sat down, turning their attention to the teacher.

"Hello seniors. Welcome." He said, moving to the front of the room, "I'm Mr. Fells and this is senior literature, so if you're not a senior and if you're not supposed to be in an advanced class, please tell me so we can get your schedule changed as soon as possible.

He moved behind his desk to pick up a clipboard.

"I don't have many rules for this class; you do what you want to do to be successful in my class. If you don't want to take this seriously, then I can't make you. However, My one rule is- do not, I repeat, do not be tardy to my class."

As if on cue, the door opens and a girl and a boy walk in.

I raised my head from the paper I was absentmindly doodling on when I heard it open and Mr.Fells stopped talking.

Mr.Fells sighed dramatically.

Oh my god.

It was Becca... and holding her hand was Colton.

He was taller...more...muscular? Strong...yeah...strong.

His brown hair had somehow gotten darker, and his green eyes were just as amazing as they had been.

My heart fluttered again, and even by just looking at him, I could feel my cheeks getting warmer. But at this point I didn't know if it was anger of seeing him with Becca or if some past feelings for him were arousing.

Becca handed Mr.Fells a note, "Sorry sir" she said, "Colton's car broke down" she said.

I clenched my jaw. Just hearing her say Colton's name pissed me off.

Mr.Fells rolled his eyes, "Just sit down" he said, taking the note from her, "Becca, sit behind Mia. Colton, sit behind Finnly".

At the mention of my name, both Becca and Colton snapped their attention to me.

I immediately dropped my eyes back down to my desk, avoiding their glances. My fists tightened as I heard them come and sit down. The desk behind me shifted as Colton sat down and I closed my eyes, taking a deep breathe.

I felt their eyes on me, and I bit my lip.

Shit. Just shit.
